it's easy to forget that O'Neil here isn't just in command of the SGC but as the commander of the Cheyenne facility he's the effective commander of NORAD in such a situation which is why he's so involved in the process
@Kez_DXX
@Kez_DXX Жыл бұрын
I thought Stargate Command was separate from NORAD upstairs. But in situations like this or when the Goa'uld show up with motherships in orbit, it is good that they're both in the same mountain complex. But we never see who is running things in NORAD so that does make sense
@dyent
@dyent 11 ай бұрын
@@Kez_DXX Yeah, SGC has to be separate from NORAD, because NORAD is a joint operation with Canada. If the SGC was part of NORAD then Canada would've known about the Stargate from day 1.

I would imagine that NORAD would not be in the Cheyenne Mountain Complex in the Stargate Universe. One of the failsafes for backfiring Gate-Operations, such as an enemy invasion through the Gate is collapsing the mountain on it - in addition to that, they had to evacuate the Facility numerous times, or seal it off. Putting Norad in the same facility would just be an easily avoidable security risk. They can easily find another mountain to build a military base into. O'Neill is involved in the situation because Colonel Chekov is there - Chekov is a high ranking Russian Military officer, who has contacts up into the Kremlin. And at this very moment they're in contact with the Russian President - at a time when he probably wouldn't pick up the phone if the American President called. The Pentagon and the NSA are at this moment probably weighing a First Strike against the Russian military, and when Jack asks to call Washington, he was very likely to just report that his hail-mary was unsuccesfull. He is also important because, in case of a nuclear war, the Stargate Facility would probably be the most important location on Earth, as it would be one of two exits from the ensuing nuclear wasteland. So they need to stay up-to-date and prepare for the arrival of perhaps the president himself, preparing to a safer location - even though it might be safest to beam him up to Prometheus when shit starts to go down. Either way, Jack would have the job to facilitate the survival of the human race post-nuclear war. And considering the severity of the situation, it might even be questionable if the Cheyenne Mountain Complex would survive such an attack. A logical strategy here would have been to beam up the Stargate and the organizational staff into the Hangar-Bay of the Prometheus and conduct operations from there, to prevent the Gate from being lost for good, should the shooting start. I'd imagine that any "survival"-plan would be based upon beaming up qualified people and supplies and sending them through the Stargate to their off-world bases. But then again, it's a TV show. They're involved, because those are the characters the viewer knows and the show needs to keep the viewer in the loop somehow.

Yes and no, the alkesh strength has always been dependant on the plot. The first time we see one it's unshielded but tough (survives a direct hit from a hatak aswell as several death glider cannons Before going down) later it becomes sheilded but only as the plot needs (like continuum). In this episode it appears sheilded given it took quiet a few hits before being destroyed. The only consistent then with the alkesh was it's poor weapon placement and it's cloak

Watching videos hearing people talk the old Soviet Russia seemed to be somewhat of a solid entity with patriotism and respect for other nations like the US. It als had to do with the Prussian heritage of duty and honors most adhered to. Unfortunately when the extreme leaders like Stalin came to power they killed alot of the old gaurd/officers and destroyed alot of Prussian cultural items and locations trying to erase that history. Not alot of people know how much the Russians have been fighting to keep it a sane country for. Too bad Putin made that virtually impossible and brainwashed millions of their independence

@@ilmistico90 Defended his nation? The entire point of Kinsey's character arc was that he only cared about Kinsey - and that his outward pretence of patriotism was just for the cameras. What is that?" The President on Kinsey: "I've got enough on you to have you shot." Kinsey on Kinsey: "Given the chance half of all American citizens won't even vote and the half that do vote are too stupid to know what they're doing." He's not a good guy, dude. He's not even an antihero.

@@tomgl6684 Superficial criticism, but Kinsey is right on the votes and wins on Jack's accusation, before having a symbiote he was trying to destroy the trust organization. Then let's face it the whole sg1 team is a facade, they are bigots, they do not understand that they are used by the US government to obtain alien technology for their benefit while hiding information from the population that pays for the project without the possibility to vote on how to use the stargate and assign the recovered technology. Only in the last few seasons have other countries managed to get some technology and the use of the stargate. Kinsey is the expert politician, who plays outside the rules, wants technology but at the same time knows that it is a danger that affects the balance of forces within the planet. Much like Maybourne but a little less selfish and more patriotic, he plays at a higher level. He plays the bad guy but actually keeps them at bay.

@@ilmistico90 The Trust?! Mate, you and I could debate whether his motive in attacking them was genuine public interest or, as O'Neill posits, motivated by revenge after they tried to *assassinate him* (hint: it's definitely the latter). But why does the Trust even exist? If I recall, it was the offshoot consisting of the remnants of the NID and the business interests that wanted to acquire alien technology for profit first, national security second. Who was the politician that got into bed with the business interests that put profit before national security? Oh yeah, it was Kinsey. Tell me again how he's a patriot and the SG teams are bigots? Also if you're defending a character who's presented as a villain - albeit a farcical, political one rather than a physical threat - and who says that people are too stupid to vote properly, it's over. You've lost. There is no point to argue any more.
