A woman in my mother's building near Columbia U committed s--- a few years ago. By stabbing herself in the heart, right through her chest plate. NYC police depts use software called COMSTAT to track crime rates, and the get demerits for serious crimes. So officers will downgrade crimes in their districts to keep the numbers nice. This was discussed in an episode of This American Life a few years back, they described the following vignette: A woman was R'ed in a vacant lot, reported it, but she was a, umm, lady of the evening, so the officers reclassified it as theft of services.

Politicians are tricky with their statistics. I'm not gonna say which politicians. But I remember back in university I had a nice debate with a good friend and the topic of unemployment came up. He claimed that unemployment went down during x politicians term for y populace. Something I had recently learned in economics class at the time was that the government had recently changed the definition of unemployment, by adding 2 new terms. "Part of the workforce", and "Out of the workforce." To be part of the work force, you have to either have a job, or be actively seeking one. To be out of the workforce, you have to not have a job, and not be seeking one. New definition of unemployed is part of the workforce. ie: no job, but seeking one. So while my friend was showing me the downward trend of unemployment for x politician, I asked him to look up the statistic for "out of the workforce" on the same site. Not only was it rising, but when you looked at the charts side by side, they had practically equal but opposite slopes. (No change) X politicians claim of reduced unemployment, was just them sweeping that statistic under another rug called "Out of the work force" Politicians greatest weapon is words, and they are tricky with them.

Probably the most uncomfortable situation: you’re packed in a subway, in the height of summer, and the air conditioning is broken in the car you’re in. Everyone is sweating, everyone is on edge. News media don't even talk about statistics in the first place most of the time, and even if they do it's just citing numbers out of context. They hand-pick stories and over-dramatize stuff in order to clickbait you. One of the best things of all you can do for your sanity, regardless of where you live/work, is stop watching/reading any mainstream news outlet. They specialize in getting you worked up/depressed about stuff that usually either isn't an issue in the first place or isn't relevant to your life - and THAT will take a toll on your mental health. Anything you actually need to know about your area's politics, public transit, crime rate etc you can just go directly to the source and bypass the news outlets and their drama/opinions. Just punch it into a search engine and go from there. Chances are you'll get better info, and more details, with less fluff. If you need traffic data, Google Maps has you covered, with real-time data by area. If you need "news" related to your industry, again do a search for that stuff; mainstream news outlets don't even cover those topics in the first place. If you need weather data for your area, you can get this directly from the NOAA....and other govt branches for stuff like hurricanes/tornadoes/wildfires/etc if you're in an area that has these. News media are just a shoddy form of entertainment that don't offer you any real value.

One of the many reasons why I try to avoid bigger cities at all costs: I was riding the train through Germany literally just once, I got stolen from in Frankfurt and almost attacked by a bunch of literal kids on Berlin main Station. Like wtf is wrong with those ppl? Statistics are not only always skewed, they also rarely include the fact we are usually talking about *hot spots.* You might have a 5% chance to get attacked in Berlin in general, but it might be a 70% when you´re at the main train station. Now you kinda can´t avoid using that one, can you? Btw did I mention it´s almost impossible to legally defend your self here? Technically it´s legal, you are just not allowed to have _any_ kind of weapon. No sticks, no sprays, nothing, especially not in public. @@euchale I've been living in a rather small town located somewhere between Mainz and Mannheim and use bus for travel to work. Nothing ever happened to me, no one even insulted me on the train or on the station even when it's early evening. Yet one guy I recently talked to said he witnessed a drunkie slowly coming at him with a knife out at night at a train station so he ran away and saw how the drunkie attacked an old man nearby who didn't see him or just didn't react, fatally wounding him over 10 times, for which he was arrested later. These things happen, even if they're not common. For biggers cities, just because you have more people, it's more likely to happen, but you're still able to avoid seeing any of it also due to the same factor. Most people are normal so majority of the population will not experience anything bad.

Yeah... Statistics often get 'marketed' with nonsense like "numbers don't lie", while completely overlooking the way they're collected and/or interpreted. You can collect and interpret data to say whatever you want, just like with normal lies, being numeric data doesn't make it any more reliable.
@hungrymusicwolf
@hungrymusicwolf Жыл бұрын
Numbers may not lie, but people certainly do lie about the numbers. That includes the people gathering and/or creating the methods / systems for gathering the data. And even when you're technically honest about the data, you still are biased in the choice of which data you call relevant. One example I like to use is the violence statistics. If you take statistics of boys bullying you (generally) find a much higher rate of boys hitting and other violent acts than girls. But girls tend to bully through something that's called reputation destruction (or some other name with reputation in it, I don't remember exactly). I am almost certain that if you then include acts such as self-harm or suicide as a result from reputation destruction form of bullying, then you'll find that girls suddenly become the significantly worse side of the equation. Why you may ask? Because social manipulation does not get punished in schools but physical violence does. So obviously it would be used much more frequently and do much more harm. So the simple assumption of "direct violence" being considered the "only form of violence" as a result of bias leads to confirming the biased world view. Statistics because of that are very often more so the result of the biases of the culture of the people that measure it than the actual reality on the ground. I may have been a bit excessive in how much I wrote in this comment. It's just a bit of a touchy subject for me.

Statistics are never a be-all end-all. People don't have time to live and experience every situation, so statistics is a great way to quickly and easily compare places. But that should only be the beginning of their research. Statistics is a summary of collected data. If the data is never collected, it can't be reported. The liberal writer always throws in some snarky comment like “No charges have yet been filed against the homeowner.” The implication they intend for the reader is that the homeowner clearly should not have defended themselves and charges may be pending as a result. Instead, they should write about how the thug who was shot was a lifetime criminal and highlight their rap sheet.

Interesting fact, if you take the hospital definition of serious injury and apply it to these situations the statistic reverses, you end up with a similar amount of public transit cases but many eliminated vehicle crashes and minor bumps that get reported. It makes the statistic reflect reality in a much better way. Basically due to what you mentioned about being screamed at not reflecting in the statistics neither should fender benders.

Thank you for confirming exactly what I was assuming. Funny how that works. I've grown to not trust stats at all. Statistics will always be unreliable as long as we leave it up to humans to report them. There are so many questions I have when someone offers statistics as an argument to anything. There are always some things that aren't accounted for. People love statistics because it makes them feel like they have a concrete understanding of what happens in the world. Unfortunately it's just a cope. Best to accept that nobody really knows much of anything. And to focus on your own life experience while also taking into account all of the experience of the people who you trust. Hopefully you're a good judge of character.

Another time almost attacked in a washroom. These days there are more bursts of anger I've noticed when I visit a few times a year, it's gotten even worse. I no longer live in the big city, I don't make much money but I'll always take uber in that city now, even if it dips into my savings. I would NEVER move back to a large city even if I made a lot more money. Feels good to be more poor but less stressed. City life is dreadful. Its nice enough to live close enough to visit.

I think its necessary to include everything including statistics when you are considering situations like this. Because while you can use your experience, your experience can be very out of the norm, which isn't always reliable. For example. Those kind of altercations you showed in the video, I didn't really see more than once every few years, until around the time of the pandemic (I'm a 31 year old NYer). So for me to assume that's how the subway always is, and is therefore super safe would be problematic. and while the statistics aren't perfect and wouldn't be a perfect representation of a city, they would help factor in whether or not I would recommend a city or not. We need to take every source of information we can and work out and dissect where and how to apply them. and disregarding any of those things would be problematic. Also not saying you are arguing to throw out statistics. Just putting my two cents out there
@monadic_monastic69

It's ok to include statistics, but you need to know how to read them like an actual statistician would, which is to hold off on the jumps to conclusions (and a lot of people are not good at statistics yet to begin with, we could do with improving that.. it's such a beautiful subject that gets super misappropriated).

That is until I moved to a Suburban neighborhood in Central New Jersey. After moving in, I walked out of my house and suddenly I felt it. It was a sort of calmness I had never experienced before. I think this issue in public transit also comes down to why there is such an issue with gun control and gun ownership in the US; the country's education and health situation is so abysmal that it ripples into criminality. Public transit experience WILL SUCK when the average person using it is permanently desperate and stressed. And it affects drivers as well! Violent car incidents and road rage is RAMPANT! There is no such thing as "safer in a car" when, systematically, no one is safer at all, but much the opposite.

It is also the case that as a passanger in a vehicle (mass transit or otherwise), the outcome is largely out of your control. The bulk statistics reflect the average, which in this case is the average driver. If you are an average driver, you are only marginally competent to drive. If you compare the safety statistics for subway passangers to the statistics for drivers who have completed defensive driving courses, the ratio will invert. That is why insurance companies will often offer a substantial discount if you have completed an approved defensive driving class.

I went to school for aircraft mechanics and after school I believe even stronger that flying is much safer then driving. However in school i learned in detail all the ways that aircraft can and have failed in flight. Even though those kinds of accidents are (sometimes literally) 1 billion in 1 odds of happening and now have new FFA airworthiness directives or regulations to combat that exact failure mode after it the accident i studied in school happened so the chance of the same accident happening again is even🎉 lower. Even then i still can’t stop my brain from thinking about it everytime i get on a flight, i have to remind myself its safe, that im traveling using One of the safest modes of travel on one of the safest airlines (Alaska Airlines). I still have to make an effort to stop my brain thinking about all the ways that things could go wrong in this noisy cramped tube. (I think a lot of my flying fear would be reduced if airplanes were more comfortable, i think the cramped seating helps keep me on edge. ) I still fly, but im a much more nervous flyer now then before i knew the details about how safe it is, which from a metal health/logic perspective is fucked up. But that just seems to be how mine and many other aircraft mechanics i’ve talked to brains happen to work.

Direct quote, "We're honestly just not interested in the truck." I'd had my Honda stolen a few weeks earlier, and suddenly it made sense why they hadn't found it after I reported it stolen. Eventually I received a letter informing me that my Honda had been towed 4 weeks (!!) earlier because it had been left in a loading zone, and I needed to pay $750 to get it out of impound or else it would go to auction the next day. It had been doused in paint remover and various parts sprayed. Full of garbage and dirty clothes. No oil on the dip stick. Ruined. Whatever the statistics may say, they don't prepare you for that kind of apathy and anarchy. The thieves took my car, police took my money, and everyone's happy. I'm happy because I left. When my Portland friends say it's not as bad as they say on the news, they're right. The city isn't literally on fire. You can live there and not be killed. But the city will take bites out of you in ways that aren't normal and shouldn't be tolerated.

Considering the amount of literal crazy people in the US as well as the general criminality rate ... it's just not safe in general. I mean people get shot for walking up a driveway or ringing a doorbell.

It's more of a culture thing. Well, not like the US got off on a head start when the religious Purtians got kicked out of Europe over to the New World

I have both used public transportation for decades and driven. I've generally had fairly good experiences on buses and trains, as far as safety, but this was Southern California in the '70s and'80s where people on public transit behaved themselves, and bus and rail in the Washington Metro area, where misconduct is rare, transit authority employees will respond to stop it. I've generally lived in areas where sane people live. I've actually been on transit vehicles where there was an accident, or breakdown, and I've always found the employees friendly and helpful in 99.9% of rides I've taken. Driving might be nicer - I love to drive - but public transit is usually much cheaper.
