Hey everyone, some of you may know, I live in central Florida and we got hit by Hurricane Irma. Preparations beforehand and the aftermath took well over 2 weeks out of this month's schedule. All is well, and the hurricane didn't cause too much damage thankfully - just some knocked out power (and windows) - and 2 downed trees on the property. So it's great to be back from that short hiatus and with several new videos this week including this Portuguese Navy 24hr, and modern USAF Survival Evasion Resistance & Escape kits. I have more videos ready to release including a 1950 survival ration with cigarettes. So stay tuned! It's great to be back - and for anyone else in Florida (and also Texas!) I hope you all are well and things are getting back to normal for you too. -Steve PS - huge thanks to Sniiip3r for this ration - here is his shop! Check it out: www.ebay.com/sch/sniiip3r/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=

Ok, Steve, here we go. 1st, nice review, it's cool seeing an American talking about Portuguese product =). 2nd, if you think that's quality food, don't visit Portugal, you will never leave again,seriously. The canned tuna comes in big chunks and we have far superior quality than that. If you liked the industrial jam, you would think you have died and gone to heaven, when trying the jam made in the villages by old ladies, or even industrial jam by some brands that bet on natural products ( my mother does it great, all kinds of jam and marmalade ) 3rd, The way to prepare the coffee is, mix the coffee and the sugar and add just a few drops of boiling water just to get it moist, not liquid, and then stir very well until it becomes a yellow paste, like 3 minutes doing it. Then add the rest of the water, but only the just amount to fill one of those tiny expresso cups, and the smaller the cup, the warmer it stays. You will have a caffeine bomb full of foam on the top. Delicious. Good luck when the shtf. Consider coming here, for some strange reason, everything that is happening, is taking longer to happen here, plus, we are considerably far from volcanoes, nuclear heads likely destinations, and we still have a lot of wild land, etc, etc.

Indeed. There are at least two shops in Lisbon like that; one is the real deal (Sol e Pesca - literally “Sun and Fishing” -, originally just a fishing supplies shop but now also a “tasca” - our old-timer version of a bar - smack down in the middle of the Cais do Sodré nightlife district, where you can actually have drinks *and* eat canned fish until late right next to posh bars, strip clubs, vintage discos, etc.), and the other… let's just say it's too much on the “theme park souvenir shop” spectrum for my taste (I don't even know what it's called - maybe something along the lines of “The Wonderful World of Sardines”? -, but let's just say it's too campy and hipster-y - for real, it has a weird early 20th century circus/freak show/late Victorian aesthetic/vibe to it, combined with neon lights -, and sits alongside all the other tourist traps in the Baixa, our downtown).

Hey Steve, I don't know if you are deep into music or what, but for what it's worth your music is unique...It distinctly reminds me of Frank Zappa's album "Jazz From Hell"...If you aren't familiar, I'm confident you will find it enjoyable. In my humble opinion Zappa was an absolute genius, all works considered. Jazz From Hell was a jewel which stood out from the rest of his catalog, as it was made on a Synclavier, a vintage and very novel sequencing/sampling machine of early electronic music. Anyway, thought it was worth mentioning. Enjoying your videos, thanks!
@threegreencharms6 жыл бұрын
Also, I noticed you are pitch/time modulating all the clinking sounds during stirring etc. in your videos, in order to form happy little jingles. Very nice touch.
@Steve1989MRE6 жыл бұрын
It's really something you mention FZ and Jazz from Hell. I grew up listening to his music. Jazz from Hell is one of my favorite works of his, along with Waka Jawaka, Grand Wazoo, Zoot Allures, Sheik Yerbouti, You are What You Is, and I almost forgot Overnight Sensation. Some of his stuff is too satirical for my tastes, but when he was injured on stage by that crazed fan in Germany and his larynx busted and leg broken he was only able to compose - this was in late 72'. He then worked on Waka Jawaka and this is when I feel he really came into form. His first album Freak Out! was fantastic - and some bits like Hot Rats were not too bad. But Jazz from Hell - my favorite tracks are Night School, G-Spot Tornado, and Massagio Galore. I did enjoy Broadway the Hardway with Hot Plate Heaven at the Green Hotel and Jesus Has Just Left the Building and Any Kind of Pain. But by 1983 he had started to get sick in an evident manner with prostate cancer - this effected his energy levels and he never took care of himself... and it reflected in sound sadly. But that synclavier work was really something. 1986 - I wonder how he must have been feeling by that point? I think he found out about the cancer in 1988 and he stopped touring shortly thereafter. Poor Frank. I write my music in classical notation on an old program that is pretty outdated - it really gives the proper sound and feeling for what I want. But yessir, I was raised with good music. I was brought to concerts since a baby - I remember sharing Good & Plenty licorice candy with my older bro at a Paul McCartney concert with my parents at only 3 years old. Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, and later on I became a big fan of Les Claypool and Primus - along with Bela Fleck & the Flecktones and also Huey Lewis & the News. I was also as a young child became introduced to Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yellow Magic Orchestra - some of my favorite music right there. Thank you for the awesome comment - best one pertaining to music that I have read in a long time.

Nice to hear you folks are okay down there. Having retired from the Marine Corps almost 16 years ago, i never thought i would even be interested in anything even remotely MRE-ish. But here i am, binge watching. Nice!

I think twice now (possibly just once, I'm old and all but I do think twice) I saw him put something up there. One was a pepper packet (Korean War era iirc) and the other was a can I think.... maybe.... I'm pretty kind of sorta sure... so yea, I do the same thing :P I look to see if those things are still around and if anything else has changed!

these videos are so much fun to have rolling while you're preoccupied with another task. I think I'm getting second hand information and will eventually start discussing the different specs of MREs while my family looks on horrified. Its cool to see all the different dishes and accessories included with other countries made ready provisions.

We had a container of MRE'S to load on Military Sealift Command vessel at the port of Jacksonville when someone noticed the container was smoking. This was back in the late 90's & needless to say it was not loaded, nor were any other mre's until their investigation was complete. It was concluded that water had breached the container & some of the MRE'S. We need to send some of this stuff to the hurricane victims! Thanks for sharing.

Oh wow! Thanks for sharing that neat story - kindof a shame though. I agree I hope the worst hit from these hurricanes are getting some MREs from FEMA

I just love it when you speed up and slow down the sound of when you tap the spoon on the glass in videos! Also, the sound of disgust of 'ugh, yuhh ugh' whenever you try something that seems okay but then goes disgusting, then you try it again later on in the video and say 'why do I keep doing this to myself, ugh.'

Spanish and Portugese cuisine majors on fresh fish and seafood. For a sublime experience Steve go to either country and enjoy fresh sardines that have been grilled at a beach bar with a chilled beer - extremely simple but my favourite culinary experience.

Spain, Portugal, and Italy are _amazing_ for canned seafood. It wouldn't surprise me if Greece is, too, but I haven't ever seen it on this side of the Atlantic; seems the main things that get imported to the States are olives and olive oil. I also know that over here you can also get canned seafood from Latin America that's really good.
