Hi, everyone! I’m back with my summer botanical series, and I’m doing my new fave royal icing flower - the tropical hibiscus. As with all of my other flowers in this series, these hibiscus are comprised completely of individually handpiped royal icing parts that are contoured and airbrushed, one by one, and then pieced together to create the final dimensional creation shown in this video. These piecework royal icing projects, by their very nature, take a lot of time. But they are always so rewarding when done. You’ll not only test your piping prowess, you’ll also end up with a stunning one-of-a-kind gift for a special someone!

My “Jungle” Dynamic Duos Background Stencil: tinyurl.com/y5vnlmxa
Assorted PVC and cardboard tubes with diameters ranging from 1” to 2 1/4”, for contouring royal icing transfers
ROYAL ICING TRANSFER SHAPES/SIZES:
Flower petals: 7/8” W x 3/4” L to 1” L, shaped crosswise over 1”-diameter tubes
Flower center: Piped with equivalent of #0 or #1 round tip to ~1/4” D to 5/16” D x 1 1/2” L
Bud petals: 1/8” W to 1/4” W x 7/8” L, piped on parchment paper (to avoid “cratering” or pitting of icing as it dries), folded on one end for more open petals, and on both ends for more closed petals
Stems: 2 1/2” to 5” L, piped on parchment paper with Ateco #3 round tip; then immediately stippled (or dabbed) with the pastry tip along the stem length to add texture
Hibiscus leaves: Piped in three sizes: (1) regular (5/8” W to 3/4” W x 1 1/4” L to 1 1/2” L); (2) slender (3/8” W x 1 1/8” L); and (3) chubby (7/8” W x 1 1/4” L); then immediately shaped in different directions over 1 3/4”-diameter tubes and inside paper towel rolls cut in half lengthwise
Monstera leaves: Piped in two sizes: (1) large (1 3/4” W x 2” L) and (2) small (1 5/8” W x 1 3/4” to 1 7/8” L. Piped both with and without small holes (away from the center line); then immediately shaped in different directions over 2 1/8”- to 2 1/4”-diameter tubes and inside paper towel rolls cut in half lengthwise

AIRBRUSH COLORINGS:
For flower petals: AmeriMist Electric Purple (for back and top middle) and Orange (for top edge); Spectrum Flow Red (for top base/center)
For bud petals: Spectrum Flow Red (for inside and top edge); Electric Purple (for outside)
For stems: AmeriMist Leaf Green
For hibiscus leaves: AmeriMist Electric Purple for center vein (on bigger leaves only); AmeriMist Leaf Green (for back and top edges)
For Monstera leaves: AmeriMist Electric Purple for center vein; AmeriMist Avocado (for back and top edges)
For cookie background: Spectrum Flow Deep Pink and Red, and AmeriMist Turquoise, Electric Purple, Electric Green, and Avocado, all lightened with Spectrum Flow White (Turquoise is lightened most heavily)
ROYAL ICING COLORINGS* AND CONSISTENCIES:
White: Thick “glue” consistency for assembly of all but flower
Pale Electric Purple: Thick flooding and outlining consistencies for flower and bud petals
Super Red: Outlining consistency for flower center; beadwork consistency for dots at end of flower center
Egg Yellow: Beadwork consistency for dots on flower center
Orange: Beadwork consistency for dots on flower center
Red Blend: Custom mix of Super Red and Electric Purple (about 1:1), thick “glue” consistency for assembling flower petals and center
Medium Leaf Green: Thick flooding consistency for hibiscus leaves; outlining consistency for stems and veins on hibiscus leaves
Dark Leaf Green: Thick piping consistency for sepals
Pale Green Blend: Custom mix of Avocado and Electric Green (about 1:1) for Monstera leaves
*I used AmeriColor liqua-gel concentrated colorings

Some people do, but I don't (as colors can sometimes change, and I always think cookies taste better freshly baked). I would never package and freeze anything as fragile as these cookies. However, I do freeze my unbaked dough, and bake and decorate it no more than a few days before I plan to eat the cookies (for maximum freshness and flavor).

Thanks! I just put them in boxes on non-skid shelf liner material without anything touching the cookie. I would not ship these cookies.

In a box on non-skid shelf liner material with nothing touching it. I wouldn't ship it. Hand-deliver.

@@aprilcurrie1921 Thanks for the sweet words about the cookies. My family is doing fine, but we've been playing it very safe. As you probably know, the US is a nightmare as far as COVID is concerned. Many areas opened up way too soon, and cases are higher than ever. Such poor leadership here. Hang in there . . . what an unimaginable year.

Thanks for the kind words. Did you mean, can you use royal icing decorations on a cake decorated with whipped cream? If so, yes, especially if they are pre-dried royal icing decorations like the flowers I made here. BUT, I would put them on at the last minute, as they might start to dissolve if they sit next to moist whipped cream for too long (especially thinner, smaller decorations).

@@mariaivonedealmeidadondoni4565 No, I don't sell my airbrush any more. It's still very much my favorite airbrush system, so I can't give you a good recommendation for another. I am so sorry; I just don't use or like many of the smaller, less expensive ones.
