3:35 Yeah, that's the exact point where this series lost me. I can suspend my disbelief around people using VHS camcorders in 2022 because hipsters do exist, but this isn't how Middle English works. The illustrations look really good and eerie, but the writing here is "beginner LARPer at a renfaire".
@livf31074 ай бұрын
That's the bit that got me too which pains me to admit, but then in fairness I don't think thaaaat many people can read 'proper' middle english. Old english even less so, old Icelandic even more less so.
@limetime90454 ай бұрын
@@livf3107 Fair point, but also this is analog horror we're talking about. This is the genre that's fond of hiding obscure historical/religious references in its work that are essential to understanding the themes, the genre of "hey, do you want to find this crucial plot point? solve this cipher and punch the string of numbers that you get into a KZbin URL." Plus, Middle English is close enough to modern English that I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be too hard for the audience to decipher given the context. Maybe I'm being pedantic, but it's kind of jarring considering all the effort that went into the visuals. You have all of these well-done eerie creature illustrations paired with the most lazily-written "Middle English" that could have possibly been inserted in there. I don't know. It didn't need to be perfect, but I think as a general rule if you're going to include something from another language in your writing, you should make sure it's at least passably accurate.

@limetime9045 The English used was more so Shakespeare's English, early modern English is what that was called. That would make it from around the 1600s, which is a bit more fitting for the series. Maybe it's just being in the space too much, but modern analog horror feels oversaturated with "extremely fake model with creepy face looking at camera" for the scare. It doesnt have to be the best costume or editing, but when it looks like they just inserted a .jpg, its hard to susbend belief. In a time when skinwalkers are at all time highs in popularity and the Mandela Catalogue is still going strong, having another mimic story means that the scares have to be better or else it just feels like its copying homework.

That "get outside and watch the sea" part reminded me of the Local58 segments that actively worked against keeping people safe from what was going on. But it gave up trying to hide its true intentions in what looks to be around ten seconds. The Basswood County Nightmare series feels like it's trying to emulate other analog horror things, but it's just.. not doing it for me. All of the recorded footage swaps over to a freeze-frame of someone with a cartoonishly elongated face. Even the moments when a creature is supposed to be rushing down the hall toward the camera, it's just a couple of still frames shown in rapid succession.
