@@0verpricedcoffee553 It would be hard, but possible. However, we'd only be able to understand every other word, if that. From a creative standpoint, the writer should've actually put effort in and make it sound remotely archaic while still understandable to a modern audience. Here's what I pitch: Ware the snecklifter, Who roams the night With eyes so deep, And skin of bone Flee the daemon, Gone from sight For it speaks like friend, But walks like foe.

3:35 Yeah, that's the exact point where this series lost me. I can suspend my disbelief around people using VHS camcorders in 2022 because hipsters do exist, but this isn't how Middle English works. The illustrations look really good and eerie, but the writing here is "beginner LARPer at a renfaire".
@livf3107
@livf3107 4 ай бұрын
That's the bit that got me too which pains me to admit, but then in fairness I don't think thaaaat many people can read 'proper' middle english. Old english even less so, old Icelandic even more less so.
@limetime9045
@limetime9045 4 ай бұрын
@@livf3107 Fair point, but also this is analog horror we're talking about. This is the genre that's fond of hiding obscure historical/religious references in its work that are essential to understanding the themes, the genre of "hey, do you want to find this crucial plot point? solve this cipher and punch the string of numbers that you get into a KZbin URL." Plus, Middle English is close enough to modern English that I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be too hard for the audience to decipher given the context. Maybe I'm being pedantic, but it's kind of jarring considering all the effort that went into the visuals. You have all of these well-done eerie creature illustrations paired with the most lazily-written "Middle English" that could have possibly been inserted in there. I don't know. It didn't need to be perfect, but I think as a general rule if you're going to include something from another language in your writing, you should make sure it's at least passably accurate.

@@limetime9045You are just pedantic.
@TheMilitantHorse

@limetime9045 The English used was more so Shakespeare's English, early modern English is what that was called. That would make it from around the 1600s, which is a bit more fitting for the series. Middle English is like what you'd see in the Canterbury Tales (that's some wacky English, yet just tangible enough that it sounds like english).

Maybe it's just being in the space too much, but modern analog horror feels oversaturated with "extremely fake model with creepy face looking at camera" for the scare. It doesnt have to be the best costume or editing, but when it looks like they just inserted a .jpg, its hard to susbend belief. In a time when skinwalkers are at all time highs in popularity and the Mandela Catalogue is still going strong, having another mimic story means that the scares have to be better or else it just feels like its copying homework.

This is a great example of how low the standard is for analog horror, lazy story, lack of storytelling, no characters live long enough to get attatched to or care about when they die, no character development and it's all just cheap scares. The monster's aren't original at all they are just a regurgated goofy face that mimics just like every other analog horror creature. I hope analog horror gets better because I love it and wish for it to be better.

That "get outside and watch the sea" part reminded me of the Local58 segments that actively worked against keeping people safe from what was going on. But it gave up trying to hide its true intentions in what looks to be around ten seconds. The Basswood County Nightmare series feels like it's trying to emulate other analog horror things, but it's just.. not doing it for me. All of the recorded footage swaps over to a freeze-frame of someone with a cartoonishly elongated face. Even the moments when a creature is supposed to be rushing down the hall toward the camera, it's just a couple of still frames shown in rapid succession.

26:50, the song is 'The Lincolnshire Poacher' a folk song/rhyme, the specific version of it used in the video is taken from a recording of The Lincolnshire Poacher number station, based originally in the UK and later Cyprus before it was deactivated around 2008. That tune would repeat over and over only being interrupted occasionally by a young sounding girl reading numbers. There's no connection between any of this and the story of the analogue horror but interesting all the same.

I think they put too much money into these horror movies. Having a bright 4K 60FPS UHD LCD OCD LSD screen is also a lot less scary than a VHS tape from like 40 years ago, they got that eerie feel to them. And the people who make the actual horror movies are usually a lot older and aren't really familiar with what our generation find scary.

@@ArmundJay it’s kinda the worst of both worlds, it’s not even good, but it still freaks me the fuck out, just without any entertainment value. I’m going to forget about this video until tonight when it’s time to turn off the lights and get in bed

@@ArmundJay the worst part is, whenever something interesting and new comes out, dozens of people immediately start copying it. there are so many youtube horror series that are just beat for beat gemini home entertainment and local 58, when mandela catalog came out suddenly every analog horror was PSAs and police reports about tall slender humanoids with uncanny faces, when Lacy's Games blew up everyone was making "children's flash game website with a dark secret" videos...

Oh! I actually know the origin of the music accompanying the face from tape 7: it’s from a numbers station! The Lincolnshire Poacher, I believe. If you don’t know, numbers stations are radio stations that identify themselves using codes, phrases, or sounds ( simple musical tunes, for example), before listing off numbers, and then ending the series with a simple “end” or string of zeros. They’re commonly believed to be a method of espionage, sending encrypted messages around containing information.

@@hansvonflammenwerfer2817 do you mean in a James Bond kinda way or the actual horror of the unknown being transported in plain sight? Anyways, I think it doesn’t actually have any real significance or meaning, it’s pretty much a ghost story with little to no merit, and was probably added to make the video a bit creepier.

My question is what would happen if multiple met at one location? Would they fight in a death match against each other to see who gets the prey? Or would they decide which one gets the prey civilly? Or even worse, would they work together to eliminate their target quicker?

This analog horror is filled to the brim with AH cliches. If I discovered it first, I would have said it's one of the best AH has to offer, but as a seasoned enjoyer of AH, I'd say it's alright, there's nothing here that breaks the mold. That said, it's not bad by any means, I commend the creator for making and sharing this stuff, it definitely has plenty for the newcomers.
