NFL Films was in its golden age during the 80s and 90s with Facenda and Kalas narrating. The NFL Network has RUINED NFL Films by only making Stupid "Top 100" Countdowns and "A Football Life" Talkumentaries. No more Team Yearbooks, NFL Game of the Weeks, and the Super Bowl Recaps are garbage now with hardly any narration, bland scoring, and ZERO wit or charm in presenting nuggets of interest about the teams and players. I almost couldn't stay awake with the God Awful recap of the Chiefs/ Niners Superbowl LIV. BORING!

I'm not a fan of either the 49ers or Bengals. But out of all the Super Bowl highlight films that I've seen, this is really my favorite. It sets the scene perfectly with the shots of people braving the Arctic temperature to get to the game. It also might be the last Super Bowl highlight film that was narrated by the great John Facenda. He died in 1984. This is pretty much a perfect highlight film and I advise everyone to enjoy it before the KZbin police or somebody else has it removed.

the thumbnail for this video is Keena Turner... he was on Bill Walsh's coaching staff at Stanford when I was coaching there in the early 90's. I was in a staff pickup basketball game with him, and was going for a rebound he came down with. He spun around and his tricep hit me right in the nose.. I was out cold. I attended this Super Bowl and sat in the end zone seats where that damned goal line stand occurred. I also attended the Bengals Super Bowl in Miami. Bittersweet. Still glad I got to attend the events. They were big time, world wide amazing spectacles!

This game felt more like Cincinnati losing it than San Francisco winning it since the Bengals victimized themselves time after time with their own mistakes. In SB XXIII, the 49ers simply rose up late in the 4th quarter to win it with that long drive.

The 1981 49ers may be one of the most overlooked Super Bowl champions in Super Bowl history. One thing I just saw was that the 49ers beat all three of their post-season opponents twice, once in the regular season and once in the post-season. Not only did they crush the Cowboys when they met during the season, but late in the season, they beat the Giants and Bengals in back-to-back games, and only the Giants really threatened them. They beat the Cowboys (45-14) and Bengals (21-3), the teams they beat in the NFC Championship Game and Super Bowl XVI, respectively, by a combined score of 66-17 in the regular season.

As a Giants fan, I admit the 49ers ran the 1980's! They deserve more rings than they won. Had 1987 been a full season they would've won and if they kept Montana instead of Young, they would've beaten some of those early 90's Bills teams for SuperBowls too.

I'm not sure about that regarding the '87 49ers, because they were the NFL's best team, but ran into Anthony Carter and the Vikings in the playoffs in their 36-24 loss, so that may very well have happened anyway. Carter torched the 49ers' secondary for over 230 yards in that game. And by the way, the 49ers made the right decision to trade Montana and keep Steve Young, because that bought them an extra five or six years at the top. Montana might have beaten the Cowboys in '92, but there's no way he would have beaten them in '93, by which time, the 49ers might have been a team without a quality QB had they let Young go, instead of Montana.

In fact, after that injury, he NEVER started another game for the 49ers. The only time he got into a game was the 1992 regular season MNF finale vs. the Lions, where he led the 49ers to two TD drives after taking over for Steve Young. The next time Montana started a game was in 1993 as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs. A year after that, which would be Montana's last, the 49ers went into Kansas City and Montana dealt his ex-team one of only two losses they would suffer that year (an embarrassing 40-8 home loss to the Eagles would be the other one). And that might have been the one time that 49er fans watched their team on TV and wanted them to LOSE, just to watch Montana, in their minds, stick it to 49er management.

Both the '81 and '84 49ers teams get woefully overlooked. They were a TEAM in every sense of the word, and didn't have a lot of big flashy media names. So many great players from those early 80s Niners (Eric Wright, Dwight Hicks, Carlton Williamson, Hacksaw Reynolds, Freddie Solomon, Wendell Tyler, etc) get way underrated. People always talk about the late 80s Niners with Rice and Taylor and Haley and co....but the early 80s Niners were outstanding, and beat some hard nosed teams to win

The real game killer was the 49ers field goal drive after that. That put the Bengals in a situation where they had to score twice late in the game. So they were forced to pass and the 49ers defense was ready for it.

This game was there for the Bengals to take. A shame they didn't win it, because if they had, those great Bengals teams of the late 70s and early 80s would get the credit they deserve. And players like Kenny Anderson and Ken Riley would be in the Hall of Fame where they belong. Several of the key 49ers defensive players of the early 80s (Eric Wright, Dwight Hicks, Keena Turner, etc) get totally forgotten. San Francisco's defense becoming outstanding in 1981 was the key to the team's turnaround in the early 80s...which of course led to their championships throughout the decade

As a Bengals fan, this just breaks my heart to watch. The Bengals had so many chances to take control of this game, but they just kept losing the ball. I have no doubt that Ken Anderson would be in the Hall of Fame today if Cincinnati had won this game. It's still absurd that he's not in, while someone like Dan Fouts (who threw 252 interceptions and never even played in a Super Bowl) is. Also, it's absurd that Dan Ross didn't win the MVP of this game. Even though his team lost, he clearly deserved the award: 11 receptions for 104 yards and two touchdowns. To this day his 104 yards is a receiving record for a tight end in a Super Bowl (thought it was tied by Vernon Davis)

Plunkett led the Raiders to victory in some great games, but I don't think he's hall of fame material. His td-int ration is pathetic: 164 touchdown passes vs 198 interceptions. Even for his time that's pretty bad. Also he only threw for 25,882 yards. In a 16-year career, that averages out to about 1,600 yards per season. No way you're getting into the hall of fame with that. Plunkett had a very inconsistent career overall. There were just few key seasons where he rose to the top and led the Raiders to glory.

I felt every bit of that wind walking to the Silverdome in the parking lot. CCCCOOOLDD! And I sat through the Freezer Bowl 2 weeks before that in Cincinnati. -59 degrees below wind chill.-9 degrees temperature. Still the coldest game in NFL history by wind chill.

Very strange game. The Bengals outgained the 49ers substantially; yet were behind 20-0 at one point. They were getting blown out - but not really. If only they had kicked a FG on 4th down at the one yard line, it could have been 20-10 with the whole 4th quarter to go. Four turnovers were the killer; or the Bengals could have blown out the 49ers badly. Again, very strange game.

John Facenda, in mentioning the "team that scored first wins the game", may have referred to the Dallas Cowboys scoring first in Super Bowl V, and again in Super Bowl X (and at the same stadium!), but would lose both of those games--in the fourth quarter each time! (In Super Bowl 5, Dallas was ahead of Baltimore in the fourth period 13-6 but lost 16-13. And in Super Bowl 10, against Terry Bradshaw's Pittsburgh Steelers, they led 10-7, and ended up losing 21-17.

Anderson is the other Kenny long kept out of the Hall undeservingly. I wonder what lobbying advantage Stabler had which Anderson doesn't, other than a SB ring. Stabler only had 5 great years, from 1973 to 1977. Anderson had at least that many.

By the way, the guy that does the radio broadcasts for your team is just about the biggest homer I've ever heard. Dave Lapham, right? Holy crap! If I was a Bengals fan I'd be embarrassed to have him as one of the announcers for my team. When I heard his call of that playoff game against the Steelers on the NFL Network highlight video I just about burst out laughing. When the Bengals scored the TD to make to take the lead he was like "YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! WHOOOOOO! WHOOOOOOOO!" And then when Burfict hit Antonio Brown with that cheap shot he was all "VONTEZ! VONTEZ!" My God, what a homer.
