It's really hard to say... A lot of kids played smash because you get to play as Nintendo characters and beat each other up, and then you play it and realize how good of a game it is. I think it would've gotten less initial recognition, but still garnered a huge following eventually.

***** If you really want to know, it's been kinda a running joke that all the zelda characters except sheik suck in Smash. Except in Smash 4. Link has some seriously good tech. He's still not fast enough to be Top 10 material but he's definitely mid-high tier. It no longer feels like his sword fighting isn't as good as say Marth, while his projectile game is still strong. His Up-B recovery is much better and his tether grab is so much better, using it in the air is actually a really good poke. He can combo into his new dash attack, which is basically his second most used kill move since it can punish rolls. His customs are amazing, a power bow version that kills at 80% from across the stage, N64 boomerang, Spin Attack dealing more damage and knockback than in melee, and bombs that have a meteor effect at high percent. He's definitely viable.

Despite keeping up with Smash news for more than a year, constantly playing Project M with friends, playing the Unlimited 3DS demo for hours on end, watching Melee and Smash 4 tournaments since the E3 Invitational and EVO '14, and making videos for Smash mods since December last year... I love the argument in games like this that items are cheap or whatever. like if you win because of items you didn't actually win. fuck that. they're part of the game and some of them actually require skill to use, others require skill to not get hit by. if you play without items because you think they're "unfair" or "cheap" you don't know how to use or defend against items and should get good.

Yeah that's my feeling on them too, to an extent, like keep them on Low or Medium, and Certain items are a bit overpowered. like the Bob-omb, it has a chance to start walking while your trying to pick up which can kill you unexpectantly, (also the red shell is a pain and not useful competively) but the land mine is perfect, even in competitive fights, to me, since it only activates with user input and isn't an insta-kill. I'll also understand if people don't want items in 4-player competitive since that is harder to keep track of, but in 1-on-1 that shouldn't be an excuse, items are there to help you keep control of the arena or to change tactics, if you can't keep up or use items properly then "git gud" or don't say your an expert player. Most items (particularly in later titles) aren't OP and can avoided or fought against, like the hammer you have no excuse to die from it in Melee or brawl unless YOU mess up.

I wouldn't say they are cheap, but I'll be honest it doesn't really feel like a contest of skill when they're on. Yeah, once an item's on the ground, it's free for anyone to take, but they don't spawn equidistant from both players. They spawn randomly and usually give only one player the advantage. So that leaves an element of chance, which feels unfair. It might be a different story if some items weren't effective enough to completely overturn the game, or 1-hit kill, but that's not the case. Sometimes you wanna fight without that element of chance there.

Imagine you're about to side smash someone, they dodge and punish, fair enough. Imagine you side smash and an explosive comes in and you hit it and get hurt, that's bullshit. The fact that some characters are better in the air also fucks things up. Because ground characters get the advantage. If you want things as balanced as possible, turn items off and you'll get a more skill based fight. Another thing is that the strategy with items on is to run away and throw item to damage them and then KO them. It caters to a certain play style. That said pro smash players will still murder with items on, they just don't like the random factor of it. One last thing, certain items are more powerful on certain stages which makes it more random. Like a hammer on FD. Or a smash ball in any situation. Items just don't work well if you want balanced matches.

GBDupree The power or the tactical use of the items, while a big factor in making them banned, isn't the only reason why they aren't used. It's their randomness. Their spawn time is random, the locations are random, sometimes the effect are completely random (i.e Poke balls). Smash is already infamous for having an absurd amount of random variables and it's just not fair if someone loses a tournament with a $15,000 prize, that they've been spending years practicing for, having to travel to friends and other competitive smashers in order to play them, having to learn fundamentals completely different from any other fighting game, work with blood, sweat and tears, you make it to grand finals and your opponent gets lucky and gets a trophy/ poke ball/ final smash/ bomb-omb/ fan/ hammer/ heart container or you have a random crate spawn right between you and blow up. These experts have experimented with using items before, for years. It didn't work. It killed the flow of the match, ruined the test of skill. It doesn't take much to kill hammer or a shell.

I was scared by it when I watched my cousin play it when I was, like 10 or 11 or some shit, and when I got a little older and wanted to play it, I either couldn't find it anywhere or didn't have the money to get it when I did. I'm playing it on WiiU. It's actually super cool, though, I didn't name the characters properly. I named Ness after me, then since I had a boy with a girls name, I decided to give the girl a boys name, so I named her Hank, then I named the third friend Morty, because he's a nerd, and that was the nerdiest name I could come up with.

Hey Pat, I also have a deviated septum. I've been told the ability to smell is great, but I wouldn't know. With one functional eye, unable to smell, and a shitty sense of taste, I have like, 2.5 of the 5 senses. You'd be surprised how useful the ability to _not_ smell is. Made me an excellent janitor at a mcdonalds once. I was glad I couldn't smell..

This is probably one of few Fisticuffs I will sit through watching. I've loved SSB ever since the very first game. I just don't like fighting games in general, so it's nice to watch them pick up something I actually like when it comes to their Fisticuffs. Usually I just skip over them. Sorry Bestfriends, just not into fighting games.

My first memory of Smash was Melee and during the first fight with my sisters and friends all I did was laugh heartily the whole first match and didn't even play the game. The glee I felt that day has still not been matched by any other experience in my life thus far.

On items, I always hear this line or something along its lines. "Why do people take items out? They're part of the game!!!" Well, so is having the option to turn items off. That's in the game too as an option. Some people want to take the RNG element out and fight something straight with someone when they feel like it. The game gives them the option to, so why shouldn't some people take advantage of it if it suits their fancy? If some people want to turn all the items up to mach 10 and just play a completely random game then that's fine too, my point is that I don't get why some people are so confused about the concept of people taking advantage of the many options these games offer to allow individual players to play the game however they want...like if they're NOT using this optional way of playing they're not playing the game right or something even if the game itself offered the choice. If items were mandatory, it'd be different, but they're not. People play it how they want because the game gives them the options to do so, it's not hard to figure out.

I have no problem with people turning items off, I turn certain ones off myself, though I never turn them off entirely. It is very much a preference thing. The only problem I see is people who force others to turn them off in the name of 'playing the game legit', and then get angry and furious and pretentious when they see people playing with any sort of items on. Then again, I hate 'professional gamers' in general and view the really terrible ones as a blight on the entire medium and why we can't have nice things, so I might not be the one to ask on things like this.

a considerable portion of the smash community prefer showing off skill and consider the items aspect as breaking that code of skill which is why the keep items off. It's annoying and i personally prefer both aspects of items but that's how some people like playing the game.

I'm gonna get smashed for this, but... I never liked the original Smash Bros. I didn't play it often and is has been QUITE some while, but I always felt like it was really slow and sluggish. Sure, it was fun as a kid, but as soon as Melee came I never looked back. And when Brawl came I never looked back either. And when 3DS came out I also didn't look back. I have a really stiff neck.

Seems like you probably liked Brawl atleast as much as Melee (Which is a serious symptom and you should probably see a doctor about possible Brawl addiction). Stiff Neck is also a symptom, from the abundance of screen scroll.
