I have been swimming for about 5 years and have had lots of lessons and have watched 100s of swimming videos. I can swim but have problems swimming more than 400m without feeling exhausted and I know it has to do with my breathing. No one has said to hold your breath for a second or so before blowing out air in the water then taking a breath. I tried this last week and every swimming session since and this one little gold nugget of information has made a massive difference to me - absolutely massive! I am feeling much more relaxed, my heart rate has reduced and I no longer feel as tired. Thank you.

yeah, my swim coach tells me to blow air out immediately and not to hold the breath at all. I started with a slower exhale last session and it already improved my endurance.

@@mridhulml9238 depends on where you live - in certain areas you should be concerned about the brain-eating amoeba with almost 100% lethality. In most places though you're good.

Never read about holding breath for at least 1 sec before exhaling, always exhaling as soon as I entered the water after recovering, for me it really has been a game changer. It may sound stupid, but in a few days this little thing helped me swim continuously 300-400m, previously I couldn't swim more than 100m. Thank you!

Agree, you should immediately start exhaling. Holding the breath will build up CO2 in the blood. Very bad advice

This is an excellent video I’m teaching my self to swim at age 66 and am doing quite good....but you’re method of holding on to your breath makes sense and blowing out through the nose does work much better because I was getting water up my nose... really awesome swimming tips...... Monday I will practice holding on to my breath for longer..... thanks so much...... I’m aiming for more laps 🏊‍♀️

I tried this in the pool today and the rhythm of it felt quite relaxed. It means you keep air in your lungs for buoyancy but get rid of air too before you take your next breath. I think I was breathing out too late before which meant I had to rush my next breath, which would make me out of breath. Thanks for the tip!!

I love this video. I love that it shows the swimmer swimming for a long time, not just a second or two, so I can really watch and study his form and learn. I am a new swimmer at age 48, literally just learned to swim in the last month. Only a few days ago did stuff start to click for me so that I can get from one end of a 25 yard lane to the other and back without feeling like I ran a sprint. What's helped me so far is relaxing first, calming down and focusing, which is hard to do because I still have fear of deep water. Slowing down, rotating my whole body at once, reaching and gliding with each stroke, keeping my body narrow and arms close not too far out, hand over hand method etc. the breathing has been the hardest aspect, but I feel like learning to rotate and not turn my head separately to the side has helped without slowing me down. I am definitely that person who was craning my neck out to breath lol. I find I am one who needs to breath out completely before inhaling quickly. Relaxing helps me do that. I still have moments of panic and I find I hold my breath slightly when I do this which does not help me. Slowly it's getting better but with lots of practice. I love the simplicity of this video, realizing it is not as easy as it looks, but once it starts to come swimming definitely becomes much easier. Very unfortunately our lap pool at my gym is closing for a month due to covid shut downs, so I will have to go through this again when I return but hopefully with more knowledge and skill! I plan to practice dipping and holding head in bathtub and breathing out just to keep that feel of being in water going.

Same thing happened to me i watched this video again n again n my pool also shut down for a month i imagined to do the same as you did with ur bath tub..luckily pools are open today n i just finished doing the first lesson..today will practice the drills in second lessons..i hope you will achieve smooth swimming action n a perfect one..keep trying

Since I last wrote, I got up to swimming a mile per session and was doing well, or so I thought, but I pushed myself too hard and my technique was probably off (if only because I was fatigued from doing more than I should have) because suddenly two months ago I ended up with rotator cuff pain in both shoulders. Went to an orthopedic doctor and was diagnosed with bilateral impingement syndrome. Now I am in physical therapy. So I have not been in the pool in over two months. My right shoulder is in so much pain right now it is very discouraging. I would share that it is good to take your time and learn right and do not push yourself so hard like I did. I really wanted to get to a mile of swimming per session in a year and I pushed way harder than I should have for my age and ability. I want badly to return to swimming but will have to wait likely at least a few more months with PT and hope that it helps. Shoulder injuries are nothing to dismiss. I went from swimming, dancing, lifting weights, to barely able to handle carrying groceries and lost a lot of range of movement literally overnight. Be careful and take it slowly!

I have watched a lot of swimming videos before, as i dont have the means to join a swimming class, but still couldn't swim. I found uiur video a week ago, one hour before my usual trip to the swimming pool. I watched your video an hour before swimming, and im grateful and glad to say that i can swim on the same day. It might not be perfect yetm but i can swim. Confidently. Thank you so much bro. You made a huge difference in my life.

I would say when you get on your side go at an angle so that when you turn your head your mouth can come out the water

How about now? I started taking swimming lessons almost four days ago and I can't stop freaking out whenever my body is underwater. I have the form but my main issue is my breathing.

@@Altskarr For me it was so frustrating to be unable to rotate arms along with kicking but finally after 15 sessions, I did a bit. Underwater fear will only go when you are able to back float and learn its recovery.

I started practicing breathing out in the water and I can already see some improvement. Squats are helpful and I can do them without any effort but using that technique in freestyle or breaststroke is still not so good for me. I keep losing my breath and I have no clue how you can inhale in freestyle and not swallow water. It requires a lot of patience but I'm sure it will get better.

@@daltonpaterson Wow, it's nice that you asked. Actually, I didn't really practice after that so there was no progress at all ;p Maybe next summer I will try it a little more but generally I lost interest in swimming.

I'm 15 and I've been swimming and acting (theater) with my youth group for about 3 years now. I put so much force in my strokes which causes me to get tired faster. I've watched TONS of videos on how to relax better and swim with out using much force. It wasn't my strokes that have been making me get tired fast. I have an ok form. It's my breathing. I think that's what's wrong with most people. My 200m (dont quote me on this) I think I average around 3:30-4 minutes. Again, remember. like I said, I've been only swimming professionally or seriously for 3 years now. I'm 15 years old. I really want to go to the Olympics one day!

I don't have more water in my nose since I was going to practicing the exercises explained in detail in this video. I am very happy because I can swim better than my friends who's has many years experience in swim. I am very happy so much thank you very much

I have went into water first time in my life for last one week, all with the help of your videos... I am facing two problems, when breathing in, I suck water into my mouth which is flowing down from the head (not wearing cap), secondly when I let go my hands off the wall while trying to float , I tip over to left or right side until face up and back down in water (feeling like falling down and get panicked)

Hello, by holding breath, you can swim for some meters. However, if you breathe the air out, you need to take a new breath. So if you are not running out of air, you do not need to breathe the air out. I recommend to breathe out in the water a little before you take a breath.

I’m 38 and only now start to practice to properly swim freestyle and I can’t say that it’s hard. As soon as I looked down and try to breeze through my nose by continue swimming, my whole body just freezes and I start to drown 😁

do you feel nervous?if you relax your hole body, you can float on the water without any motion. Or you can try to kick your legs while breathe out air in the water.

i try to exhale on both mouth and nose, but somehow i still get water down by nose, not a nice feeling. and while at the edge of the pool, it's really easy to breath correctly, but when adding swimming, i get a bit chaotic :(

The squat and facing down floating breathing worked for me, but the leaning back down one didn't. Even if I blow from my nose before going in I still manage to breathe in. After this video I managed to not be afraid to attempt to swim in shallow water though so thanks

I'm trying to change what I do wrong, which is I begin the downstroke with the leading arm to raise my head enough to breathe, so I'm breathing too late and losing driving force, looking closely at this demonstration I can see that at the moment he takes a breath he is pushing back with the driving arm quite strongly and the forward leading hand is angled up to provide a little extra elevation for the breath. That obviously works better with some speed, I will try this.

I only get water through my nose when I try to be in horizontal position, however, the exercise you provided is a good one to practice. Also, I will do the other exercises for breathing because I believe I need them. I learned that it is recommended to inhale through the mouth, and breath out through the nose. I think it makes sense because, you do not want to get water when trying to get a good amount of air. I saw that the video mentions, “You must use the full capacity of your lungs by expanding your chest out”, that is an easy task when you are on the ground, but different when you are swimming. What I will try to do is take a breath, hold it and don’t breath out because it was said, “breathing out is only in the water.”

hey 🖐 I also only get water doing the horizontal position. Curiously, if I dive and I am horizontal but facing down it is fine. Have you managed to do the horizontal facing up position without getting water into your nose? Any tip? other videos with exercises? 🤔

For me the problem is every time I try to breath in water gets inside my mouth, and also there is just a split second for inhaling, I just simply can't take enough air (

Take short breaths first. Start to prolong your breathing depth slowly. Gain confidence during the procedure. In the end, you will determine your own maximum deep breath. Do not expect to breath in the same way as you do on the land. But you shall be able to breathe in much deeper than you do now.

what helps me is breathing a bit out of my mouth and nose while under and just as im surfacing. That way im sure my airways are cleared and i take the breath. I breathe out under as he said and just before/as i surface to make sure im clear of water. I had a problem with breathing until i learned that, now i do just fine

Hello, if you want to take a breath even if you do not need to do it. Then you can breathe the air out immediately after breathing in. However, if you want to take a breath only when you need it. You need to swim while holding the breath. Once you feel you need to take a breath. Then, you start continuously breathing air out and then taking the breath.

For people afraid of diving it could be better to start with breaststroke swimming; here you can swim with your head lifted out of the water all the time (at least at beginner stage). Actually certainly especially because of this in german speaking countries of europe it´s traditionaly much more common for people and kids to start with that technique! Actually nearly only sporty people swim freestyle there. Biggest disadvantage of this is, that leg movement and also coordination arms-legs is pretty more difficult

Yep, usually several hours after swimming, I'll experience a large deluge of water discharging from my nose. Yuck!

Try bending down until your head is inverted, after swimming, with luck it will just run out.

I have seen a lot of videos for beginners but none of them teach swimming in a very slow and step by step method mainly the catch. They either show outside the pool or too fast inside the pool. Can you make a video exclusively on perfecting catch?

i have two coaches,one of them told me to throw out the air with nose, but another one tells that i shouldnt breath with nose but with mouth,because in the higher level of swimming(advanced levels) breathing with nose will be difficlut as throwing out all of air with nose is more difficult. for me it's easier with nose, but she tells that breathing with mouth is the more correct...

How to breath in and out through our nose when we are using nose clip? And also during the inhaling if I pull out my head from water then my legs will fall off to the bottom of pool, then how to do it?

Today was my first day in pool and I tried blowing air through nose when inside water. And that's when sometimes water got inside my nose.
