First Listen - "Supersonic" by Oasis (Hip Hop Fan Reacts)

The crackling sound is a guitar pick being dragged down one of the bass strings of a guitar, which are wire wound round a core (the treble strings are just a single wire). Do it slowly enough and each time the pick goes over the winding, you get a kind of click. Do it all the way down the string and that’s what you get - all guitarists know it but what’s fascinating about this track is that i can’t honestly think of anyone else making it such a prominent part of a song. It’s totally in line with Oasis’ raw, organic vibe - no nonsense, no bs, no distance between the band and the audience

Also, I was at Uni in the Brit pop years - great times! I never got to see Oasis live but I saw a lot of the other bands of the era - Blur, Suede, Manic Street Preachers. That might have been the last time when nearly all bands were live first, recording second. These days bands record first and then maybe go on tour and they don’t have the performance skills anywhere near as much. Great reaction of course, as always dude :)

The only other slow pick slide I know of (fast ones aren't that rare) is from the song Baby Rann, by Izzy Stradlin. Although that pick slide isn't nearly as slow.

I saw them in Dublin in 1996. 4 months after the Whats the Story album was released. It's hard to put into words the buzz there was for Oasis back then. Magical time!

My favorite band ever. They brought everything you could ask from a rock n roll band. The loud music, the young essence, the attitude, and they sound massive live. Definitely Maybe is one of the best debut albums and a fan favorite for what it meant. I do think the second album What’s the story? Morning Glory is their best and one of the best albums of all time, they were at the top of their game. After you listen to the second one, I recommend the documentary called Oasis Knebworth 96’. It’s the final act of Rock n Roll before the Internet and one of the biggest concerts in the history of music. They moved a whole generation and brought light to people when it was needed.

Mate, this song live is unreal. I’ve never seen Oasis perform it but I’ve seen Noel play it, he slows it down and plays it acoustic and puts a new twist on it which is amazing. And I’ve seen Liam play it exactly like this, how it’s meant to be played. Amazing either way.

Oasis are insanely loud live. I went to their Wembley concert in 2000 when I went on holiday to the UK and couldn't hear properly for a good few days after that! Incredible attitude and sound.

I'm pretty excited for you man. There's so much great music in the nineties, and the "britpop" thing was a thick corner. It's good to hear this music again, especially good to see some fresh ear hear it for the first time. I don't know if you're familiar with The Jam, or Paul Weller (I'm assuming you must be somewhat familiar). But, yeah more great music. The Jam was Paul's first band they are as British as music gets.

Such a great reaction man, what a debut single! I seriously recommend to listen to live performances of Oasis songs especially in the 90's, they were absolutely untouchable. Some Might Say at Maine Road in 1996 is amazing as well as Slide Away at Knebworth.

I remember when i first heard this. I was also blown away. I bought this album the day it came out, on vinyl since one of the best tracks is missing from the CD and cassette. However, by the time they had blasted this album non stop on the radio all year i was ready to never hear this again. And 28 years later i still feel the same, more or less. It's curious seeing this reaction to listening to a first time listen. On that comment about hearing it live, the first time i heard this band and this song was on The Word, which always had live performances. That was a great performance and well worth looking up if you're new to Oasis. It's amazing to think, though, that there are people too young to actually have not heard, and grown sick of, Oasis' music.

Yeah their first album's hard to top. Pure, uncompromised rock 'n' roll from start to finish, with just one embittered ballad thrown in at the end. The second album's more diverse, with stuff like Wonderwall and Cast No Shadow. Can't beat the first for consistency though.

I've been binging on Supersonic, in part thanks to your reaction. I agree that Noel's lyrics are more impressionistic than literal. My impression (ha!) is that the song urges being brave and engaging in life, with the chorus telling the alternative--obscurity. "You'd better find a way, for what you wanna say But before tomorrow 'Cause my friend said he'd take you home He sits in a corner all alone He lives under a waterfall Nobody can see him Nobody can ever hear him call" I really enjoy your reactions, Syed, and hope you are back soon. 'He lives under a Waterfall' line could be a reference to Noel's love of the Stone Roses. 'Waterfall' was a big hit of theirs. Or could be completely wrong, but just one theory :) Oasis were huge when I was a kid and although I was only 8/9 when they came along, I had older siblings who were all well into them and it rubbed off on me. Oasis were the main reason I taught myself to play guitar. I can't really say whether Definitely Maybe or Morning Glory are better as they are both great albums in their own right for different reasons. Almost like a double album in a way. DM has that rawness and grit which is brilliant, then Morning Glory takes it to another level with some more anthemic songs as well as rock n roll bangers. Had the pleasure of seeing them live in '02 and '09. Great video. Enjoyed it, thanks.

My childhood in a song. First gig I ever went to was the Earls Court one on the documentary. I got a guitar and my first book was definitely maybe. I learnt that and the 2nd album what's the story start to finish. Couldn't afford lessons. 1st album is still the best. I was on a council estate and im sure it was like when the pistols came out I imagine. We thought we can do this too. They are like one of us. Noels favourite album was never mind the bollocks and definitely maybe he wanted to be as powerful as the bollocks and also the who live at Leeds album. U were totally right about layering guitars. Noel got carried away and layered twenty guitar parts for power, but it was when their engineer stripped most of them off they got the right sound. One of the best tunes is bring it on down (very pistols) but slide away is the best tune on the album for me. Also don't miss the b sides on the singles, as back then u would get a couple each single. Noel admitted he should have saved them for the 3rd album and regrets it. Take me away, Talk tonight, masterplan, round are way, acquiesce, headshrinker, dyer wanna be a spaceman, fade away and many more. Great reaction mate.👍

They had their own sound and could really kick it out, try Champagne Supernova when you can, talk about a huge sound! They sound so 90s but under the surface you can hear the influence of the Beatles, the Who and the Kinks. Too bad the brothers had such a love/hate relationship, they sure made great music together for a few years. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶

The Cure were layering guitars way back in the 80's. Worth listening to some of their earlier tracks. Noel was a Cure fan (and Smiths fan) and no doubt influenced by their guitar work. In fact - he got Robert Smith to remix his track Pretty Boy recently (featuring Johnny Marr on guitar).

Great analysis mate! "Statement of intent" and "Take on the world" u really understanded the true essence of Oasis. Supersonic is the first Oasis song I listened (maybe except wonderwall but i didnt even know oasis probably) and I listened on music video, couldnt believe the level of coolness. It is an absolutely 10/10 banger. First album is all about self confidence/bravado that they gonna achieve success, Noel became successful writing songs about success in first album. A self fulfilling propelling prophecy in our eyes! Oasis is one of the few songs you can say lyrics are a little random, usually all of them has a real story with real people, the band is too popular, but if someone doesnt know them, they really dont know them, only one song and thats it.

The pattern with '90s and '00s UK rock was they would show up with explosively genuine songs up front and then slowly but surely be diluted by the industry until their so-called "hits" were soggy, soulless clothing store muzak. Oasis unfortunately followed that trend (I honestly can't fathom wtf anyone likes about Wonderwall), but this song was definitely something real. Only one to completely buck the trend (that I know of) is Radiohead.

By their own admission Oasis weren't great musically when they started. They were kids from Manchester. They are a 'common man make good' band who struck a chord and captured the zeitgeist.

Who cares about advanced progressions? What matters are the melodies you create on top of those basic chords and let me tell you, Noel did that brilliantly. Writing a song like this takes something far more special than being a technically proficient musician.
