I feel the same way, the older I get, the more I love the variety of songs on III, which often comes off badly in rankings. They are rather "short" tracks and LZ played few of them live (usually only about 2, rarely more). Depending on the mood, you can choose the appropriate album at LZ. Have fun with all kind of good music!

Killer killer riff, and a really funky syncopated drum pattern. But to your point about Zeppelin being Zeppelin, I think what they’re attempting to capture on III comes to fruition on IV and Houses of the Holy. And be ready: the next tracks are all acoustic but they work well. But I kind of agree: Zep’s at their best when they’re tearing shit up and burning it down😅.

I had forgotten how much I truly love this song. Everything about it is so cool. And that moving line in the verses and then also just the melody and the chord structure of the chorus? If you did that with eighties or even 90s guitars and amps and production values with all the extra compressed distortion and all that kind of thing, that could work almost perfectly as a metal song. To hear them do some diverse things that come off really well, you should listen to some of the stuff off their final album before Bonzo died, in through the out door. They have evolved with the times and they have only gotten better and better at their craft and some of that material on there is just unbelievably great. Fool in the Rain, All of your Love, Southbound Suarez, Hot Dog, Carouselambra, etc.

But I guess the most amazing thing to me is the huge number of their songs I absolutely love within their very deep catalog. Who knows, someday I may connect with it in a new way and it will rise up in my list.

Although it may not be their best song, it has most of the things I like about Zep as a band and it jams out. The only thing about those first six albums that I can see as maybe flawed is that the band were overworked and starting with this album there are signs of that but it’s subtle.
@LeeKennison Жыл бұрын
@@Hartlor_Tayley I agree. It has all the right elements of a Zeppelin song, so I'm not really sure why I don't connect with it like I do so many of their other ones. I listened to it again, to see if I could figure out why. I think it might be just that the chorus (sound wise, not lyric wise) that is a miss for me. I like the verse vibe and groove, and I think if it had a chorus more to my liking I would probably really like the verse sections. But this is a perfect example of why I will never be allowed to sit at the cool kids table. 😉

@@LeeKennison yeah it does sound unfinished and a bit rough but it has that fizz, or maybe it’s the band being overworked with deadlines that kept that song more primal. I don’t know.
@LeeKennison Жыл бұрын
@@Hartlor_Tayley I don't think it is a primal thing for me, because I love me some raw and primal rock, which is why I loved Nirvana when they hit the scene. Why I like the garage band sound. Even though we both eat and breath music, you still can't always account for why you don't connect as well with something as you think you should. I can try to come up with musical reasons, but when I look at it tomorrow I will likely think, "well that's a bunch of bs."
@Hartlor_Tayley Жыл бұрын
@@LeeKennison I agree. It can’t be reasonably explained. “Communication Breakdown” was a garage band standard. Everybody played it but nobody could sing it. I think lots of bands rewrote it for themselves and it could possibly be considered a proto punk song.

Your comment about a "deep cut track" - yes, this is one that my Brother put on a cassette for me, during college, to get me into the less famous tracks. That was in 1989, before the masters, box-sets. My Brother had some bootleg' including "traveling riverside blues", which got its official release a few years after. When I studied in Europe, a friend was attended that I had "Travlin' riverside blues" on cassette. We went to the USSR in May 1990, to see "that side" and we had to stay in our hotel rooms, outside the official tour. We could get better beer and vodka, in the big tourist hotel, then citizens could get on the street. We discovered our rooms were actually 'bugged'. My friend Lee, did an awesome imitation of Robert Plant, and had blonde curly hair. We had a small speaker set to plug into a cassette Walkman. and, my Brother's Led Zeppelin mix tape was our favorite way to grove, drink, and maybe not be heard,...maybe the Soviet's listening became Zep' fans.

This song is definitely a "deep cut"; it's not one that many would know or recognize as Zeppelin but it does sound remarkably modern to my ear. Its title got its inspiration from John Bonham. Being "out on the tiles" meant you were going drinking. Bonzo had a little tune he'd sing that went "I've had a pint of bitter and now I'm feeling better and I'm out on the tiles. We're going down the rubbers and we're going to pull some scrubbers because we're out on the tiles." Syed, I've no idea if British slang is still the same but Bonzo uses a bit of Cockney rhyming slang so in this case, "rubbers" comes from rub-a-dub = the word "pub". To "pull" means "hook up with" and "scrubbers" are "loose women" (politely). If this slang is still the same and you knew all this, my apologies, but I didn't want to assume. Anyway, that's why Bonzo got a writing credit. If you listen closely, when Robert says, "I'm so glad I'm leaving" there's a voice immediately after that says "stop" and is believed to be Jimmy cueing the next little break and that they either inserted it there to go with Robert's lyric or it happened spontaneously and they just left it in. In later concerts, the opening to this was occasionally used to start Moby Dick or to start Black Dog. This song is a catchy, bouncy tune with a hint of growl and is a lot of fun.
@joescott8877 Жыл бұрын
I KNEW I'd heard something about that "stop" moment! Thanks for the reminder of what it was. I am flashing now on the sound of a phone faintly ringing in, I think, "The Ocean"? Anyhow, I used to have a book about Cockney Rhyming Slang, but I DIDN'T know of this Bonzo ditty, ha!

I think Gallows Pole is a great song, Tangerine, That’s the Way. Those are Zep classics, but I think it’s all an appetizer for the next 3 albums. Immigrant Song and SIBLY stand up as all time rock classics. Live versions of these songs on bootlegs are f’n amazing. The How the West Was Won Immigrant Song is crazy, as is the BBC recording. PLEASE listen to a boot of Osaka, 1971. It’s the most blistering rock performance ever recorded IMHO, and it starts with an insane 1-2 punch of IS and Heartbeaker followed by SIBLY. It’s historic and should’ve been professionally released by Page. Also, live Celebration Day versions 1971-1973 blow away the album version. Just look for the outtake from TSRTS on KZbin. So much great stuff left out of the movie.
