Hi Cristine & Ben, I realize you may never read this but I figured I owe it to you guys to give it a shot. In last week’s episode and in a few past pods you’ve mentioned that you may not have continued recording new episodes if it weren’t for listeners posting their appreciation for this channel. I just wanted to add to those comments to say how TRULY excited I always am to wake up on Tuesdays and see the new video thumbnail each week. You each offer such insightful/reflective/witty commentary and I genuinely look forward to the release of each episode. It is immensely meaningful to have a podcast with hosts who offer complex, thoughtful perspectives on social issues/current events/culture and a variety of other topics while also bringing joy and levity to each conversation. That being said, I hope neither of you feel obligated to record merely for the sake of your fans, and that you can instead continually find meaning and enjoyment in creating each episode. I and I’m sure many others will remain deeply grateful and completely thrilled upon the release of every episode for as long as you will continue posting. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for all of your thoughts and hard work. I hope you’ll keep making podcast episodes for as long as possible in whichever format is most exciting for you both, and I’ll definitely never tire of just the two of you talking. :)

I recently lost my father this past Sunday and I had been saving podcasts for the birth of my first child this February (So I’d have something to listen too while juggling a newborn). But I couldn’t keep away in this time of grief. Seeing someone else continuing after the loss of their father really helps me feel better. Thank You!

Cristine, thank you for mentioning heteronormativity in these magazines! Starting in about 7th grade, I began to feel isolated, broken, and confused because my friends had crushes on boys, most often popstars, and I didn't. Those teen magazines amplified my insecurities when they assumed I would or should find boy celebs attractive. I remember taking a quiz on which Jonas brother would be my best love match and thinking, 'I don't like any of them, or any boy for that matter, what's wrong with me?'. I didn't have any representation of girls who felt what I was feeling. Luckily times are changing for the better. I hope younger generations will have it easier than I did 🏳️‍🌈👩🏻‍❤️‍👩🏼💕😸💜

I'm 31 and in Europe we used to have notebooks specifically dedicated to quizzing friends and classmates on different personal topics. The questions were about anything from a favourite colour and phone no. to 'who's your crush?' or 'have you ever kissed?'. Every respondee would write on one of the pages of the notebook, but also get a sneaky peak into other people's answers. Some of such notebooks would also have physical locks embedded in the hardcover and opened with a key.

Just a pro tip for anyone reading out there: Dairy products that are soft (milk, cream cheese, sour cream, mozzarella, etc) if you see *any* mold, do not use anything else. Due to the material, the mold spores have travelled far further than your eyes can see and nothing should be salaved. Please use this same thought process for any softer material, such a bread or fruit. If your dairy product is a harder material (most any cheese aged over 6 months) it is possible to cut off the mold and use anything you have left. Aged cheeses are dense enough the mold is only able to penetrate so far, and the methods of preservation/aging the cheese often help to impede the mold. But, poor Ben, my hands were covering my mouth the whole time he explained what his grandma had done.

I feel the need to comment concerning JoJo! When she was young, she was a bit of a one hit wonder, but it sounds like it was thanks to shady record company dealings from what I recall hearing - the record company sat on some of her music and wouldn't release it & wouldn't release HER from her contract so that's why she disappeared for quite a few years. She was finally able to break out of the contract somehow, or the contract expired (I think within the last 5 years or so, can't remember how she got out.) So anyway, she's back, and tons of her fans from when she was 12-13 have remained loyal and flocked back over. I'm not a superfan, but JoJo is a queen - she is so talented!! 👑❤️

That's what I came to say too. She got a lawyer and I believe it was regarding a New Jersey law regarding children and contracts and how it was unlawful So she was able to get out of it. Or at least That's what I remember.

Her studio screwed her over. She had to stay locked in a contract and her studio wouldn't let her release new music. She had to find a loophole just to be able to get out of her contract and be able to record her own music. It was really devastating and hard on her. There's a really interesting documentary I believe on KZbin that she posted or did a collaboration with.

She finally has gotten out of her contract due to a legal loophole about them holding such a long contract on a minor. (She was 12 when she recorded her first album) Since then she’s released an album Good to Know and an EP trying not to think about it. Both are amazing R&B works. Her vocals have grown even more. Truly one of the most talented living vocalists alive. It’s a shame what happened. (Seeing her on this thumbnail got me to excited as a JoJo stan)

OMG. This reminded me of my days reading magazines like these. There was one time in high school when I collected religious magazines where they had articles about monasteries, BUT also about crushes and teenagers problems. This last section was like a question from a reader and a nun replying. One girl was asking for advice on how to deal with bullying, she described how she was called ugly and mocked. And the nun legit replied "if a lot of people tell you you're ugly, maybe they're right." And then she went on and blamed the girl for the mean things that were said to her. Like "it's your fault that you're ugly. Why don't you do sth about it?" It still shocks me to this day. But hey, I doubt that reader was even real (you never know with these things)

the dancing question. i dont care if you're a good or a bad dancer, its all about your willingness to dance. i grew up going to a lot of family parties and dancing. i wouldnt be with someone that felt forced to dance. its fun if we both enjoy it :D

also 34f; hollo from Kansas! my older (40f) sister and i both had mag subscriptions growing up- she particularly loved the quizzes & took her answers very seriously. she also was very invested in the workout routines - it's insane how many workout routines were pushed and how body critical some of those 90s magazines were

Wow such a throwback to my childhood! I can’t count how many hours my friends and I spent with these types of magazines. The best part was the posters that cam inside. My room was COVERED in them.

41:42 fun fact: the boy in that picture is Jason Dolley, he played PJ on Good Luck Charlie and he was also in Minute Men! Idk if Cris or Ben will know those but my fellow zoomers should remember the iconic Disney show GLC.

The nostalgia! I'm a British 31 year old so the magazines had different names but it was all the same quizzes and stuff. I miss the free gifts that came with a magazine. Loved a pink fluffy topped pencil or weird sticker set! For anyone curious I read Girl Talk, Mizz and Top of the Pops

It's funny you describe these as 90s magazines. I remember doing these in middle school, and I was born after 2000. Growing up in Eastern Europe and moving to Canada, i realized that, in a lot of ways, early 2000s where i was born was basically like the late 90s in the US. It's odd how much I relate to this, with the added perspective of sort-of adulthood (early twenties) and gaining maturity within the context of relationships, respect, idealism vs. realism etc. These topics are not something I hear talked about a lot, so it's refreshing to hear someone acknowledge them.

I actually loved this episode and I’m so happy you picked this concept on the stream over the weekend! The silly questions were light and fun and opened up a lot of good topics for discussion.

I used to do these kinds of quizzes all the time in the 90s and early 00s, they were one of my favourite parts of the magazines. I never took them very seriously, for me the impact was probably more subconscious if anything, like the reinforcing norms stuff. I do remember there were a lot that weren't about relationships etc too, more personality quiz style. I also loved the pages where people would share funny, embarrassing stories, though I'm sure if I read them now they'd seem ridiculous lol.

One time my sister went to a wedding as a nanny that Ashton Kutcher went to with his family. His son wanted to blow up balloons, but the child of the host (my sister’s charge) had wanted to put holes in all of them as a “prank”. Ashton was very frustrated. I don’t know how often the pranking karma has come back to haunt him, but I think he’d sympathize with Ben’s perspective lol
