@Adamkalb16 ай бұрын
It would be a more brazen admission of laziness if this did mention that, because they have tons of time to watch the nominations and must use their time wisely to do so! Voters must be required to at least WATCH the movies that pay millions to get nominations! At least Adam kind of gave the voters the benefit of the doubt by not addressing this in case some of the voters actually do watch the nominated films, because he and I would rather not assume the worst about things we do not know. - only the things we do know. If nobody making a movie or nominating a movie cares enough about the movie to *actually watch it,* then awards shows lose the last shred of authenticity and dignity that I thought they had here. Because if the people who get to vote for films are too spoiled to have any interest or care in watching them, so that they at least know for sure that they have some good options to choose, then I do not think their vote really matters if they chose one at random. I mean, their vote still somewhat matters in the sense that it is counted up for something, I just mean that a voter's vote does not personally matter to them if they have no real opinion on the movies they did not watch. The opposite can also be the case: A German TV show called "Halligalli" (basically two comedians fooling around doing random stuff) once proved this rather impressively: They wanted to win a "Goldene Kamera" ("golden camera"), a German TV/movie award. So, they called the agency organizing the award show and were told that everything was already finalized and no additional awards were planned. However, when they registered a fake star agency, made a convincing website and assured the awards agency that Ryan Gosling was going to appear to accept a prize, all of a sudden they were able to make it work and awarded a prize to La La Land which Gosling was supposed to accept, representing the studio. They then came onto the award show with a guy who looked somewhat similar to Gosling dressed up nicely and actually got away with the award after uncovering his identity right before leaving the stage. Later, the award company assured the press that they had already planned to award La La Land, but couldn't convince anyone to come to Germany to accept the award, and that was the only reason why they were immediately ready to include Ryan Gosling in the show, not because having an A list celebrity there would raise the prestige of the golden camera...

You know, when I was a kid, I would wonder about how the "best movies of each year" are chosen. I thought that, of course, it must be a fair process, so I imagined that there were people whose job it was to watch every single movie released every year and decide on the best one. And I mean EVERY movie, I pictured these people sitting in movie theaters for hours on end watching movies or something. So uuuhhhh, apparently not how it works.

One of the reasons anime movies basically never wins or gets nominated. A lot of academy voters even refuse to watch the few Ghibli movies that sometimes gets nominated (and that that would only be possible with the help of John Lasseter). No other anime movie except Ghibli (at least recently) has even gotten nominated. There was even a voter who called it: “...Obscure freakin' Chinese f***ing' things that nobody ever freakin' saw”. The fact that Japanese studios can't campaign as much in the US and that anime is viewed as "for nerds" makes it so that many amazing anime movies don't even get considered. Even Your Name, a film that broke so many records, barely got considered as a nominee.

Makes you wonder how Parasite broke the pattern. I mean, Bong Joon-ho's always been a great director, but it's not as if anyone in Hollywood outside of non-mainstream enthusiasts would've heard of him or his work (and really, if you watch other films like Mother or Okja, you realise that Parasite isn't even that unusual for him). So either there was a Korean studio with a shit-ton of money to burn just to get Oscar-level recognition, the Academy cooked it because they were sick of people complaining about them not being inclusive enough, or Parasite really was that great a film. Knowing everything we know it might be all three.

I choose the shit-ton of money to gain world wide recognition/ads route. Bcoz it does open the world viewers to Korean movie/dramas/etc (u name it). It's good movie, but not something new to Bong Joon Ho.
@priyachoudhary98962 жыл бұрын
It's shit ton of money and oscars being 'inclusive' there were still skeptism due to language barriers and ' I can't watch with subtitles boo hoo' people. Parasite wasn't garnering attention during its development or release globally and also AMAZON. being featured by a giant corporation boosts your recognition a lot.

Like 4 years ago, my favourite fusion band got nominated for a Grammy, I was really excited thinking that their efforts had truly paid off and that they would get the worldwide recognition they deserved. The band said the time the winner of their category would be announced so, like 30min before, I turned on the TV only to find the red carpet was on and it wasn't going to be over for another hour or so. I went online to make sure I had the time right and I did. I eventually found out their award would only be broadcasted online and that's when I discovered the Grammys had a whole section the general public doesn't watch because there are no major celebrities involved. While most people were watching who wore who, the band I love won, but I felt disgusted by the fact that in order for you to get the recognition (not just the award) you have to be a recognisable figure in the first place.

+greyson rhodes I'd have to disagree, I understand it's your opinion but bare with me. The reason Leo's performance in The Revenant is so amazing is because he spends most of the movie barely even speaking. All of his emotions are brought to life through his various physical and facial expressions along with his grunting, etc. As you sat in the theater Leo made you feel exactly what his character was feeling at every moment of the film. It takes incredible acting to immerse a viewer into a film without many words being spoken. Now I myself love The Wolf of Wallstreet and also believe Leo should've won an oscar for that, but The Revenant was just a different beast.

The Netflix dude was played by Ray Wise, who has a gift for playing oily executive or skeevy lawyer types. Needless to say, this particular role was the perfect fit for him! However, I most fondly remember him as Leon Nash in the original RoboCop. His best moment there was an ill-advised kick to RoboCop's groin at the dance club, and then getting dragged out of the club by his hair. Also, his expression and reaction to his toxified partner-in-crime near the big climax was downright priceless.

@MrBeastknows8 жыл бұрын
Preference and determined quality both have a place in art.
@Tippy2forU8 жыл бұрын
+Pine Straker: Actually subjectivity means a lot along with bias. The definition of subjective is kind of contradictory. Subjective is the judgement of something based on experiences and feelings without outside influence. Doesn't outside influence create your judgements and feelings? Unless you are getting directly paid or the anticipation of compensation, it can influence your judgement due to prior experiences. It basically says Judges, Congress, Mayors, a Prime Ministers, and Presidents possible lack integrity. How can your truly trust the world when all you need to do is slide them a few thousands or possibly millions to sway the vote in their favor. It takes a strong person to turn down thousands and millions of their currency and maybe the threat of death.
