If we grew up being codependent, we learned how to be needy. Codependency teaches us to caretake other people's feelings at the expense of our own and to get love from outside ourselves. It teaches us that we are dependent on others for everything, including our sense of self and our happiness. It drives home the lesson that we are not fully functioning adults.
This is the recipe for people pleasing, self-doubt, being a doormat, and having low self-esteem and low self-confidence. To heal neediness, we have to begin to fill up our own cup. Given that we had no model for this growing up, we may find that we have no idea how to do this and don't know where to begin. This is to be expected.
To start, we can begin to trust what we think and feel. We are so used to being gaslit and having our feelings invalidated. This will take time. Remember to be gentle with yourself as you heal. There is a lot of undoing that is going on and this is a process.
One of the ways we can heal is by tapping (eft). Tap along with me to shift these lessons and to heal from this childhood wounding. Repeat this tapping script often until you feel the old issues come to the surface and be released.
