Holy crap. I haven’t heard this song in years. I remember when it came out. My best memory of this song: It was 2006. I was on terminal leave from the U.S. Army. I was in my driveway, had a boombox with a cd player, so naturally I had George playing while I was doing some major work on my wife’s Blazer. I was replacing the oil pan gasket, fuel pump, shocks, starter and a few other things. My wife would come out and sit in a chair and we’d both be singing along while I was slinging a wrench. King George NEVER goes out of style, or favor. He helped bring country music to more people than ever before. If you want a real powerful song by George Strait, check out “You’ll be there”. It was a dedication to his late daughter, and I consider it a tribute to my father who died in Jan 1998.

an old Merle haggard song, George records a classic for almost all of his albums, a great way to show respect for those who paved the way

Have you heard his new album that just came out? Over 40 years of making country music and still making top hits, George Strait is the last icon and legend of all country music history. He’s the king of the charts.

For those who don’t know, gringo is a word Mexicans often use to describe people from the US. There are several stories about its origin. One is that it is the Spanish translation of a Greek word used to describe any foreigner who speaks with an accent that is not Spanish and who is not Hispanic. Another story is that it comes from the Mexican American war and referred to the American soldiers uniforms which were green at the time. The American officers would use the words “Green go” to order the soldiers into battle. The Mexican soldiers shortened it to gringo. It was usually meant as an insult. Also from the same war, the American soldiers would sing a popular song of the time, “Green grow the Violets.” and the Mexican soldiers combined the first two words into the taunt “Gringo” This is the story I have heard all my life. Who know which is true? Even Mexicans don’t seem to know for sure. And as with many terms with racial overtones, it can be used as an insult or not, depending on on the circumstances and the tone of voice in which it is used.

Try the earlier Merle Haggard version. Haggard has at least as many great songs as George. And George would agree.
