Great video. When I was head propagator at my last job, we used vermiculite or perilite. Those items don't stick to the roots when you go to transplant to soil. A heating pad under the flats is important for winter propagation. A warm mix will help the cuttings root quicker. Keep up the good work and experiments. You'll soon be able to open your own nursery.

@@TechplantChannel Where I live there is no import of sphagnum so after I saw that nothing is happening in water I did with cuttings like old ladies show me for propagating monstera deliciosa ... One node cutting fixed on top of the soil mix (that is mix of peat and perlite) in little pot... I used plastic beer cup so I can see when it's dry... Got some in plastic box some in zip lock bag and all got roots after 2 weeks... But rarly watered all substrate, just when I see it's dry all way down to the bottom and I just sprayed from the top because that is where roots are growing -first up in air funny and then they fallow more moist and that is down in soil... It was fun to watch... They were under grow lights because it was February and after 2 months got a lot of new leaves... But I will not report them yet all together with original plant because I want to wait till the roots are all around those little pots to be sure they are strong enough... 😁

Hi, great video about propagation. I saw your unboxing this one back in April 2019, and I guess the black leaves are the old one from back then? I just got my Raphidiphora Tetrasperma from the local plant shop, it got damage, black edges, and yellowing, from the traveling, and stayed at my friend's place for about a week. I got it home a week ago, and set it under a sky light, on the third floor. I saw its new black edges on a younger leave, so I freak out a bit, and inspected the soil. There are small particle, fine salt looking, mixed on the top soil, with tiny bug crawling. Hopefully, not thrips, but I pushed the soil, spray it down with Safer's End all, and separated it from my plants "quarantine" zone. Anyhow, I saw your's continue to grow despite the dying leaves, I guess I'll just keep an eye on it for a bit, then repot it, then move it in my collection.

I don't water them directly I spray heavily twice a day. They're in a terrarium I have from when I had giant day geckos which is were the mother plant was originally. I have 7-10 large some over a foot long cuttings. Hopefully it goes well.

Thanks for showing the process! For fear of potential root rot, can you clarify on how much water we need for the spaghnum moss? I know you commented below but it's still not clear. Not sure if you threw out any water off camera after dunking in the spaghnum moss. Should there be sitting water so that the spaghnum moss are, in a sense, floating around? or Should the spaghnum moss be soaked/drenched but there should be little to no excess water? or Should we squeeze the spaghnum moss to get rid of as much excess water possible?
@TechplantChannel4 жыл бұрын
i would not have any water sitting in there. Add water till its wet and pour any extra water out. then let it start to dry a bit where its only damp, then re water it. Just try not to let it get bone dry. i let it get pretty dang dry once or twice and it survived. I hope this helps a bit

It can grow in both you just will need to watch root mass and make sure it doesn't exceed the surface area where oxygen is exchanged back into the water. There comes a point when the roots will demand more oxygen than the water can get exchanged from the surface. Also you gotta fertilize

Great video! I got two cuttings in the mail with roots. I planted them in well draining mix for aroids, one is starting to grow but the other one lost one leaf. I had used a different pot for that one, I think it was not allowing air to pass through because the first one I put in a plastic orchid pot with a lot of holes, and that one is doing fine. When I took a look at the roots on the second one, it was basically sitting in mud, even though the top would dry out, and starting to rot. Cleaned it off with hydrogen peroxide and put it in just water. Lost the last leaf. The stem, root and node are fine but no leaf. Should I keep it in water or try moss, and will it still grow with no leaf?? Thanks ahead of time!!

Or should i just leave it in the gcontainer it came in weith super wet moss in it? Hope you’ll notice me. Thank you and love all your very informative videos!

I dont think a clear cup is necessary, however i find its really helpful for seeing how saturated the moss is. if you are gentle i dont see why you cant switch cups. I like the moss wet but i dont like water sitting at the bottom. Also make sure it can breathe and its getting good light. I think what helps a lot is letting the moss dry until its damp then re wetting it. That cycle in my opinion lets the roots breathe and not be so water logged and prone to rot

Hello, I put a 3 leaf R.Testra cutting in moist sphagnum moss. It’s been about 3 weeks and all the leaves turned yellow. What should I do? I haven’t looked at the node or in the pot. I’m afraid to. What do you suggest? Thank you!
@TechplantChannel2 жыл бұрын
the leaves can die but the node will root and push out growth, sometimes the new growth will even push off the leaf if that makes sense

What will happen to the section where u cut them? Will there be new grow from the mother plant?
@TechplantChannel4 жыл бұрын
yes, when i took the cuttings the mother plant put out growth from three spots!

I am about to get a mini monstera cutting and I am nervous it won’t survive! When you put the water in the moss, do you just let the moss soak up the water each time or do you let it drain like normally watering soil? Thanks for the video!
@TechplantChannel4 жыл бұрын
i pour some into it so it soaks up nicely but isnt like sopping wet. you dont want lots of water sitting in the bottom.

@@TechplantChannel Thanks! What kind of moss do you suggest to use? I always see stuff at the pet store, is that different than if I got stuff from a nursery/home depot?

What were those tiny clear bugs on the spagnum moss?

Hi, I've a question about propagation and I hope you can help. I just cut my rhaphidophora at the stem under the node where an arial root was growing. The thing is, some weeks back I trimmed off the arial root so it's just a small stump. I'm trying out water propagation and I'm wondering if roots would still grow from that arial root stub while this plant is sitting in water
@TechplantChannel4 жыл бұрын
all my other plants where i chopped the areal root grew new ones from the stump, so it should

Hi there I have a raphidophora that is 4 ft tall and the stem snapped right a the bottom above the dirt where it was planted (with the original the roots at the bottom below the soil). Am I now forced so cut the plant up or can I just cut the stem where it snapped and put it in the soil? So stuck.
@TechplantChannel2 жыл бұрын
Im sorry if this comment is too late. You can try just rooting the bottom few nodes. putting that in some water might do the trick just make sure its getting some light, if it starts looking wrinkly in the stem, then maybe i would start chopping it up and sticking it in sphagnum. Ive rooted pretty large chunks so it should work! Good luck!
@Mari-ck7pm2 жыл бұрын
@@TechplantChannel thank you so much! I ended up having to chop it. Now it is in three 2 ft pieces with 2 nodes underwater per stem. But it looks like sphagnum is better for rooting than water? I Will go to home Depot now and find it. Thank youuu

How much sun do you give it? I had mine on an East facing window sill and now the leaves are droopy. It is currently in water. Is it too late to switch it to sphagnum?

I have a question. Why wouldn't you just transplant in the moss vs removing it?
@TechplantChannel2 жыл бұрын
Moss holds a lot of water and where i keep my plants i like soil that drains faster. But if you live somewhere where your pots dry out really fast it will be helpful to leave it on

Could you give me some advice on my baby rhaphidophora? It's a tiny plant (~4" I think it may have been a pup?) with two much smaller plants growing from each side, almost where it would be under the soil (I received it bare rooted, with barely a single little root) It has failed to thrive, and leaves are constantly droopy. I had in soil, but, it kept falling over since I tried to keep the smaller side plants above the soil (which left less than an inch to stick in soil) . Decided to put in water, and she looks worse. Should I stick the tiny side plants under sphagnum to give her more area to possibly root? I'm kind of at a loss and don't want to lose her. Thanks is advance for any help you could offer!

I would keep it in sphagnum moss in a large bag for high humidity. keep it warm too!

I have TONS of orchid bark do you think that would work for propogating?? I don’t have spagnum moss but I can run and get some if you don’t think the bark would work 🤔🤔

How fine is it? if its SUPER chunky maybe not, but if its like penny sized i bet it would work, but i cant guarantee because ive never tried.

Mine lost a couple leaves last year and has been stuck at 2 leaves ever since. Any suggestions? I feed it and don’t over or under water and it gets the right light and I repotted too. I’m stumped lol

The old one i took a cutting from got stuck like that, im still working on how to jump start it, mine did that after i accidently overwatered it to an extreme so all i can think is maybe the roots are really damaged and the plant cant support more than 2 or 3 leaves
@pistolvixens4 жыл бұрын
@@TechplantChannel ah ok. I can't remember when I got it so it could have been in the beginning when I use to over water lol Would putting it in water for awhile help? I've heard of people doing that 🤷♂️

does the plant that you take the cutting from continue to grow?
