I hope that fate and circumstance will make things better, so you and him will have a bit of a life together, as i can tell that he loves his dad very much. All my hopes, man. Keep up the good content, and keep that chin up. You inspire a lot of us - by months end, i'll have a $200 CAD/AUS build that will be my own 'Hot Used Build' that i'm going to use as my console killer/substitute.

Hey Brian, I love these old but good setups. I have one myself, a MSI P67A-GD55 mobo with an i5 2500K at 4.2 Ghz. Running Oculus Rift butter smooth with an overclocked GTX 970 and 16Gb of DDR3 1800Mhz Ram. I built this computer in 2010 and apart from the GPU and RAM, everything is still the same! I have recently won an action on eBay for an i7 2600K for AU$150, so a nice little upgrade to improve my video rendering times and multi tasking (I am hoping to OC it to at least 4.5 Ghz). Next to come will be a GTX 1070, possibly Zotac Extreme (I love the chuncky look). I'll wait for black Friday for a good deal... Your videos rock, keep it up mate! Cheers, Allan.

I legit just did a very similar style build...grabbed a complete 1U server for about $50, case for $15, PSU for $20, and an Asus GTX 680 DCU II for $90. The server only came with an X3440 though, but I plan to replace it with X3460/X3470, add another 8GB of RAM, and SATA 3.0 + USB 3.0 PCIe cards. Current specs are as follows, for under $200 - Intel Xeon X3440 (came with server) 4GB DDR3 1333 (came with server) DL120 G6 motherboard (came with server, MATX) Corsair CX430 Antec P182SE (score for $15 lol) Asus GTX 680 DCU II 4x250GB Seagate Barricuda (came with server) I also have a spare Corsair H80 I have put clear tubing on and am just waiting on a cheap tube reservoir in the mail and adding that as well. A few leftover Bitfenix Spectre Pro, and possibly a few more HDD kicking around. I have the leftover 1U server case, with PSU and fans, etc. left over as well which I plan to sell and recover some of the money spent.

Used builds rock! So much 2nd/3rd gen i5/i7 being pulled from the business world. Not to mention all of the server and workstation stuff. Its mind blowing. Chips that 4 years ago were over $1000 are now 50 bucks. You can also grab Xeon W3670 for $80 on ebay. I've seen some Dell/HP server/workstation mobo go as cheap as $25. $45-50 for dual socket. W3670 are 6 cores/12 threads! Running duals it will probably score a passmark rating over 15,000. That's pretty sick. Also you can usually score Dell Optiplex 790 with 2nd gen i5's for around $100. And often in a midtower case, with 4 gb rams, and even 120-250 gb mechanical disk. If you are looking to go super dirt cheap. Only thing you will have to change is a power supply since OEM supplies are like 250-350 watt range. Unless its just an e-gaming rig with a RX 460 might be able to get by with the OEM PSU since the 460 draws all it's power from the pcie slot.

I regularly mix used and new parts. It's great. I've had very few issues. One of my rigs is a used 4930K with a used Gigabyte X79 board and a 290X, another is a used XEON e3-1225v3, a used ASUS P9D-X motherboard and a new GTX 950. I always use new PSUs though because I don't trust used ones. Planning on getting a used R9 Fury next to replace the 290X.

I think this is how alot of us upgrade over time though. Adding new stuff to our already existing systems. Taking our old stuff and adding it to newer systems. Or buying better used parts of the same generation and upgrading. All new systems are nice, but, at least to me make no sense when just fixing the occasional bottleneck seems to be just fine. Also cheaper.
