Nobody said it couldn’t be done. They were just not willing to do it. The profit margins on turboprops and corporate jets are larger so that’s where they put their developement recources. Also, in the US, they’re a bit slow when it comes to designing new aircraft. Don’t fix it until it’s broke. PC12 is a good example. It took 30 years before Textron woke up and designed a competitor for the PC12. Kudos for Tecnam picking up the ball and running with it. Cape Air is a happy customer because the aircraft is custom designed for their needs. That’s pretty extraordinary for such a small airline.

The US was first with the Single Engine turboprop Van but dropped the ball after that. There should’ve been an American PC12 and TBM competitor within ten years of the Swiss and French showing there was a market for a single engine King Air 90 and 200. The Piper M600 is getting close to the TBM but that’s thirty years after the 700 showed up.
