With rural India developing at a rapid pace, it becomes imperative to understand the forces behind this pace. One such significant force is Dr. Ruma Devi. Realizing that most homemakers that were deeply embedded in remote villages had the potential and the drive to fill in their free hours of a day by indulging themselves in the creation of art while possibly earning some additional income, she set out to change their lives by providing them with the platform and opportunities they lacked. Hailing from rural Rajasthan, understanding the importance and scope of skill development, she has trained over 22,000 artisans from over 75 villages that won her awards including the highest civilian honor for women in India, the ‘Nari Shakti Puraskar’ in 2018. While she continues to stand as a pillar of strength for the women in not only her own community but also similar communities across the nation, she addresses the roadmap that could prove highly effective in bringing empowerment to the ignored sections of our society. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
