Metallica has collaborated twice with the San Francisco Orchestra, the original "S&M" concerts were back in 1999(with their previous bassist, Jason Newstead), and then "S&M2" in 2019, which this video is from. The setlists are a bit different of course, since they had a couple of new albums to work with in 2019. Both concerts are incredible, I think you'd really enjoy seeing them in full. For me the standout in S&M2 has to be James singing "Unforgiven III" without the rest of the band, only the orchestra is accompanying him. Whatever technical imperfections there might be in his singing, it's one of his most soulful, emotional performances I've ever heard. This song, "No Leaf Clover" was one of two songs written specifically for the original S&M shows. Occasionally they'll play it in their regular concerts, but not very often.

Back in the beginning Metallica formed in LA. However they really wanted Clif Burton a stellar bassist who’s only terms was they had to move to San Francisco and rest is history. After becoming the biggest band in the world James did take some vocal lessons but mainly for endurance and longevity for his voice. Please find an 80’s version of Fade to Black and compare young vs old Hetfield.

It's a miracle that the orchestra can keep up with Lars's sloppy tempo. He's horrible at speeding up off tempo randomly. He's always had a history of making the whole band play all their songs a lot faster live because he has no sense of tempo an doesn't use a click track. I doubt he'd be able to play properly to any click track in the first place.
