Personally I don't see why people complain about the ending to this. For one, all Red asked was him to tell him what his plans were honestly and openly. Much like how Hyde mentioned his own plans, Red didn't care if they were plans he wouldn't approve of, only that Hyde was honest and had his path laid out in front of him. Eric, not only came up with the most honest answer to those questions, but he also grew a spine and stood up to his dad after years and I mean years of Red's constant insults, yelling and threats of putting feet in his ass. You all may not be proud of what he said, but Red sure as hell was.

Yeah, Red wasn't expecting Eric to figure out his entire life in one day. It wasn't even so much about having a plan as much as just providing a status report.

I love this scene( especially the food). It really shows how red and eric have disconnected world view. Red was probably born 1925 jumped from highschool to WW2 sailor in 1942 at 17 and served till the end at 20 and don't forget he grew up during the great depression. Eric mirrors that by getting to complete highschool without having to rush into service and he grew up in a easy time so with all these advantages i can understand Reds frustrations with eric not having a plan.

I love that Red rewarded Hyde’s honesty.

The nostalgia in me loves those answers. The dad in me wants to kick his ass out the door SO FAST. I guess growing up really is the transition from being Eric to becoming Red.

I felt like Eric’s last storylines were the writers being petty about Topher eventually leaving for Spider-Man 3.

Plus he and Donna married and have a cute & tall daughter who is your typical but good natured 90s teenager. It seems as though Eric and Red over time more or less worked things out. Likely bonding over beer and Red saying something like: 'Well son, I don't understand what the hell it is you uh.....teach....but hey, they pay ya for it, and you stick with it so you've found a way to make an honest living.' Then instead of giving a soliloquy Eric simply replies 'Thanks dad, cheers.' They bump beer cans and drink up.

I like the steady pleading look Kitty gives Red at 1:44 when he starts questioning Hyde. She knows her son will be fine, she's much more worried for Hyde and is nonverbally tell Red she's not okay kicking him out.

When I was 18 pretty much like Eric with an, "I don't know", attitude, living in my parents basement. 10 years later with my own house, car, education, career, I now understand Red's frustration. No plans No food for you

In this scenario, if it was me, this is how it would probably go: Red: when are you moving out? Me: tomorrow. Red: Girlfriend? Me: Don't have one and I never will. Red: Job? Me: Retail. Red: Future? Me: Promising.

Because of two things. One, he wanted Eric's honest answers to his plans. He never said he was gonna like those answers, but he wanted answers he got them. Two, in the added bonus, Eric, whom had mostly been a doormat to Red, finally grew a spine and stood up to him. Regardless of who is in the wrong about this scenario, Red admires when someone has the balls to tell him off. When Bob temporarily grew a spine and dropped F Bombs on Red, Red rather than get upset was impressed. Had Bob not backslid he would have earned Red's full respect rather than the half respect he stuck with up to the 90s. Eric on the other hand did what he was asked and stood up to him. They cut that off because he probably was gonna cry in pride.

That is what I would say to Red, if he was a jack ass or even a hard ass to me, asking me those kinds of questions. I would just respond to him like Eric did, by saying that I would hang out with Donna, that I would quit my job, do nothing about my future, and then have him make me move out of the house if he decides for me to want to move out. I mean, let me ask, who else would say that to Red, if he was a jack ass or hard ass to you, just like he was to Eric, when he asked him those questions?

It's because he knew Laurie was a moron who couldn't survive on her own. He hints at this in the episode where Laurie says she's going to beauty school. He knows Eric is smart, so he pushes him to get the most out of him.
