It's sad that BJ is known more his ko outside a bar and losing his last 7 fights, because prior to that he was arguably the greatest lw of all time. It's hard to convey just how dominant he was, back then he was seen pretty much as the Anderson Silva or St. Pierre of the LW division. There are few fighters as well-rounded as he was, and between his ridiculous grappling kills and great ground-n-pound, to his really good striking, even with those losses he's still easily one of the top five best LW's of all time regardless of what some might say.
@raikkel9516

Oh yeah you have to judge fighters by how they were in their prime, and bj is prolly top 5 lw in his prime. I do wonder how he would perform against today's competition however, as lw is stacked at the top rn.

I was where you were. Couldn't admit I wanted to go down on my favorite fighter. Family and friends all knew, but I had a gf and couldn't talk about it. Then we split. Now I can safely admit I wanna go down on Meisha Tate. So, just say it out loud. You'll feel LIBERATED. If you wanna give Bj a bj, just say it.

@@raikkel9516 Good point. I just remember his domination of Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez and was like yep, he's unstoppable. And those two guys were very well-rounded, especially Florian. Then when he lost to Edgar, pretty much everyone at the the time were stunned, I mean Frankie a couple fights earlier got absolutely manhandled by Gray Maynard, (another underrated LW from back then), and we all expected BJ to win the rematch, but yeah... that didn't happen. Frankie was just too quick, and BJ i by that time was already getting to be older, so i think it was an example of two guys meeting at the same point just one on a downward trend and the other on an upward one.

@@raikkel9516 i disagree, we have to judge fighters based on their legacy accomplishments and dominance compared to their contemporaries(no extra credit for not fighting people and no demerits for any losses) that being said bj’s legacy definitely has him as top 5

@@ElJefe-47 Maybe, but I'm not sure that "a close decision going the other way" is quite the same as a straight-up robbery. Shogun was definitely robbed (got another chance and capitalized though, which was good) while Hendricks was probably robbed against GSP (didn't get another chance but thankfully got the title anyway). Gustafsson, Santos, & Reyes each had very close decisions against JBJ and only one of them got a chance to redeem himself. I'm not sure any of those count as robberies even though I disagree with the decisions.

I'm not the biggest Tito fan, but I don't think he gets the respect he deserves. He really did have a solid run as champ, and was considered really big for the division at the time, too (crazy that Usman is probably about the same size). I also think it's kind of interesting that, in a way, the loss to Frank Shamrock is what took him to the next level. Say what you will about Tito, but his conditioning was always on point after that fight.

I remember at the press conference for 104 Dana was livid but everyone I watched it with thought it was super close and were ok with Machida getting the nod. I think Dana was only mad because shogun had a friendlier style than machida.

At the time it was an EXTREMELY controversial decision. The outrage may have softened over the years especially with newer fans who weren't around when that fight happened, but make no mistake many thought it was a robbery and truth it still kind of is. Machida fans were really the only bloc of people who didn't see the fight as a robbery, which is to be expected. Shogun did have a more fan friendly style, but many were absolutely fascinated with Machida's unique and elusive style. Both men were big fan favourites at the time, it really made no difference in the long run to the UFC whoever was on top. Both men were star attractions in Brazil who had cross-over appeal to the Western audience.
@brendancassidy9346
@brendancassidy9346 Жыл бұрын
@@madgavin7568 it really wasn’t. About half the people you asked thought Machida and the other half shogun. An immediate rematch was justified but it wasn’t a robbery. Shogun took his foot off the gas in the championship rounds and it cost him. Close fight. No robbery. The only person who was outspoken on that decision was Dana. That’s because shogun had a more fan friendly style. Not sure why but Dana and the UFC were never fans of Machida.

@madgavin7568 Жыл бұрын
@@brendancassidy9346 That isn't exactly true. The closest round of the fight was the 1st round. Rounds 4 and 5 were definitive rounds for Shogun. It was a robbery, Shogun should have gotten the decision to begin with. The fact the fight happened 13 years ago doesn't change that fact.
