@davebowman64974 ай бұрын
Well, the title was "..most INFLUENTAL..." (not "biggest fanbase"). With that, there is essentially two criteria tha should go into the ranking: - Bands/artists that were essential for the forming of the genre in the late 1960s, and - Bands that later contributed to a MAJOR change or evolution of the genre. Much as I have big respect for Rush, they do not qualify high wrt any of those. In no particular order, 6 out of the top 10 must include: King Crimson, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Yes, Genesis. All of them definitively rank higher than Rush. Debatable absentees: Frank Zappa, Focus. Appreciated absentees: Kansas. Sorry, all 'Merkans. You created blues, country and good old rock'n'roll, and the evoled that into a multitude of lovely genres. Everything rock/pop stands on the shoulders of that! But prog rock is essentially a Europeean thing..

I get that you think Focus deserves to be in the top 10, but lists are always a matter of personal taste.

It seems to me that the author confused the concepts of “influential” and “best”. I think the most influential are King Crimson, ELP, Soft Machine, Yes, Genesis. they influenced subsequent generations of musicians, even from non-progressive scenes, such as New Wave. The rest are just great bands. Who were your influences, for example, Reinessance or Moody Blues, or Jethro Tull which I love very much? In principle, no one. These are diamonds that sparkle on their own.
@BackingTrackCenter5 ай бұрын
You're right about the influence of those bands, but the list really focuses on the most influential, which aren't necessarily the "best." Hi... having problems with my genre here, where do Hawkwind fit, Colluseum II, Brand X etc.Are Magazine progressive? Are SAHB progressive, many of their songs seem to fit in with your chosen list.Lots of other stuff I could say here as so many bands have a lot of jazz, blues, folk and rock crossover. So much comes down to personal taste.. freddyagain just introduced me to Bevis Frond who I think may be in the progressive genre, certainly amazing music. I'm a confused old fella... thinking 'best of' are entirely subjective and don't offer significant and valid explanation for placing in any meritous list. Not criticising you, just engaging in conversation. I do enjoy your videos, thanks. 🤘🎵👍✌🎷🎸🥁🎙

Hawkwind, Brand X and others are great examples of bands that combine progressive elements with other genres to create unique sounds. Magazine and The Sensational Alex Harvey Band have a lot of experimentation, but I wouldn't include them on a conventional progressive rock list, but could they? This is where personal taste comes into play! In the end, the perception of what is and what isn't progressive is quite subjective. Thanks for your comment!

Pink Floyd which I love and listen almost every day is one of the first British psychedelic groups. They slowly departured from it through the period of "space rock" and became somehow progressive rock band after releasing "Ummagumma" (November 1969) and "Atom Heart Mother" (October 1970 ). With all due respect for Pink Floyd , position number 1 belongs to King Crimson because their album "In The Court Of The Crimson King" ( October 1969) is one of the most influential of the progressive rock genre. It is regarded as first mature and the greatest progressive rock albums of all time. Rush ( number 2 on your list above Yes and King Crimson ) moved towards progressive rock after Neil Peart joined the band on July 29, 1974 . Drummer Neil Peart credited the adventurous and innovative style of Michael Giles (drummer of King Crimson) as an influence on his own approach to percussion. Rush was also influenced by Yes ( influenced by King Crimson), Pink Floyd , Jethro Tull and Genesis (P.Gabriel and S.Hackett era). King Crimson not only influenced prog rock but for much wider spectrum of contemporary music beyond general rock genre. Thus , your inconsistent list reflects only your taste of music and is far cry from reality. Anyway , I am not a fan of contestation in music. Music is diversified as much as minds of human beings. Everybody has the right to his/her choice of music creation or admiration . My advise is: Please avoid any pretentious titles. Thus , to be honest ,the proper title your presentation should read : The 20 Most Influential Progressive Rock Bands According to Me .
@BackingTrackCenter4 ай бұрын
Thank you for your detailed comment! It's clear that you've given a lot of thought to the history and impact of these bands. The list is subjective and reflects a perspective on the most influential bands in progressive rock as a whole, not only focusing on the musical influence exerted on other bands, but also the power to influence people to begin to appreciate progressive rock. Your points about King Crimson and Rush add valuable context to the discussion. As you mentioned, music is deeply personal, and everyone's experience and taste shape their opinions.

I was a bit surprised by the absence of Frank Zappa on the list and a total absence of later prog bands like Flower KIngs, Spocks Beard, Neal Morse, Haken, Big Big Train etc. Yes, you can't fit all of them into the top 20, but IMHO some of them definitely exerted more influence on the modern prog then some of the bands on the list.
