Mazda's Crosstrek rival just got better and way faster this year with a turbo engine that makes it quicker then most of its luxury rivals from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. Would you guys consider buying this over a far pricier luxury brand?
@OldThomMerton
@OldThomMerton 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not a luxury brand guy . . . I'm more interested in performance, especially handling, and I've owned and liked Mazda vehicles; the steering feel is usually great and previous vehicles in their line always had a fine suspension even in base vehicles. Sadly, Mazda is pushing towards that 'white area' (A|A reference) with the Buick and Cadillac and the semi-luxury types . . . and they are being forced there because the leadership at Hyundai and Kia have out-Mazda-ed Mazda, bringing really sporty and fun cars to the market; meanwhile Mazda can't seem to keep up and their products are not as sporty and fun-to-drive as they used to be.

I read that a turbo and direct injection engine combo gunks up the valves more and quicker. I am not really looking for luxury, but more so for reliability and longevity. I am a fan of the Crosstrek, but Mazda’s reputation for reliability and longevity has my husband and I looking at the CX30 for a daily driver. I am a taller guy than him, but I think the CX30 will be large enough for me because the Crossrek definitely is. Should I be concerned with a direct injection/combo, or am I overthinking this?

@Ayush Malpeddi because at the time, Hyundai and Kia had a reputation for making garbage cars (of course today is a different story) but Mazda doesn’t have such a history or stigma, their worst was probably the 00s when Ford was at the helm but even then they were still decent. I think Mazda can safely mold themselves into an affordable luxury brand. I would’ve preferred the safer route of bringing enfini or a new luxury brand into the US but Mazda doesn’t have the money for that most likely.

From a personal mechanic perspective: I don’t like a machine telling me how I should drive and Mazda keeps it that way. You take full control of the vehicle. Vehicles nowadays offer tons of features which is nice but I like to keep it simple where I have full control of the vehicle (p.s makes it cheaper to fix, less tech) From a personal customer perspective: Maybe there could be a few things that Mazda can do to “make life easier” but other than that. So I just purchased this vehicle and I have to say it's the perfect blend of a practical daily driver without giving up the fun. It also floods where I live with bad roads so it's great for me. Nothing else really compares at 32k. (2024 Carbon Trim). My previous vehicle was a 2015 328i Xdrive. The Cx-5 was just too big for me, it looses the agility the cx-30 has. My main critique is the small gas tank. Coming from the BMW I love the fact that it isn't too premium and yet still fun, because the BMW meant $$$$ on maintenance and repairs. (Which I avoided mostly with DIY) Of course you can't DIY serious issues which is why I traded before they started.

"i dont know if people are looking for this type of speed in this segment" Every single car in this segment is underpowered. 250hp is great, maybe even a little high, but all the rest should be pushing close to 200hp, i'm not sure why they all settled in to the 140hp range. That said, this turbo motor is what was missing from the CX-3 (that and a manual gearbox). I'll be sad to see it go in the next model year without realizing its full potential.

Mazda makes great cars and SUV’s. I’ve had my cx5 now almost 3 years. It’s very close to luxury. They need to improve on the infotainment screen. The thick bezels are not great. Digital dash needed and the looks wear on you rather quickly. Great cars though the cx5 handles amazingly
@Ryan57Garr

They finally did improve the CX5 infotainment for 2021. It’s a bigger screen, new interface, and a bit more responsive than the last gen. They fully got rid of the touch feature though so you must use the wheel on the armrest for everything. I don’t mind it! Muscle memory and you got it figured out within a couple days of driving.

@@Ryan57Garr You would mind if your system has onboard gps and using that wheel knob to look for an address is fucking atrocious. To me part of the eloquence of the CX30 is that is retains simple, clean, easy to read and operate gauges and controls and allows you to easily focus more of your energy on enjoying driving it. The gauges remind me more of European cars of the past, with few gimmicks; and the shifter, remaining a traditional stick is something that everyone I speak to agrees needs to remain in vehicles -- nobody like these rotary dials, and it's the one big thing I don't like about my Ram truck. And there's nothing wrong with the 6 speed transmission. I've had some 6 speeds I've loved, and had no issues with the 9 speeds I've had on our Cherokees -- they performed very well; but didn't offer the traditional sensations and sound effects a 6 speed still provides. And is someone looking for this sort of performance in this segment -- Heck yeah! I actually had an older customer with a 2.0L Ecoboost boasting to me about how fast it was. Is it something I'm interested in myself, too? Heck yeah!

@Keith Rogers The Jetta has a 1.4TSI (C&R tested it and did 7.6s to 60mph), not a 1.6 (it should be getting a new 1.5 with pretty much the same torque and power numbers). And I don't think it can feel weak when compared to that car, the Mazda3 with the 2.5 NA is actually faster (7.2s in AWD form which is heavier and has greater drive train loss) and does not have the classic 1.4 TSI turbo lag (and no one is brake torquing their car at every stop light). I've driven both cars extensively and I couldn't disagree more with your comment. Although both are great cars, I don't see where you get your information from. Also, Corolla, Forte, Elantra, base Civic have NA engines, so not most cars come with turbo engines, for most people who just want or need a commuter car Turbo is not essential, and not all turbos are faster than NA engines.
