Great review. Tom always delivers a thorough, honest assessment for any car. Surprisingly I've found at my local Volvo dealer a used 2022 C40 with 16k miles and just under 38k. The catch? No idea. But going to check it out thanks to this review. 👏

@Slowhand871

@@Ozefan2580 that’s understandable but I would write down how far you drive every day before you change again and look at the fast charge time. My opinion is we get to hung up on range and time to change . Most people drive 50 miles or less each day and most EVs can rapidly charge 100 miles in 15 min . So in this case how many times do you drive 275miles ? No doubt it’s a consideration and there will be times it’s a hassle to spend an extra hr charging but can you time it with a food break. BTW I would go drive the VW 4ID it’s awd is 295 mile range so 365 with quick charging and it’s a solid fun car .

I would say the carpeted front footwells are a bit of a miss if you live in a snowy climate. Going to be hard to stop the sides from looking shabby quickly, unless you get some really good winter floor mats that go up the sides - covering the carpet so what's the point of the carpet. Great review as always Tom.

Always appreciate your highly informative videos, Tom. A couple things from a Volvo XC40 Recharge owner. We live in Minnesota, and though we never ran it all the way down, in the really cold months the Mileage Assistant would show a max range of 150 miles. We didn't get the heat pump, which I think would be a must if we were to do it again. Weather affects range! Also, my wife was recently rear-ended in the Volvo at a stop light by an Audi Q5 going around 25 mph. The front-end of the Audi disintegrated, which to be fair is probably what it's supposed to do, the Volvo? Got a little wrinkly. If you want to go somewhere fast, in vast comfort and almost certainly arrive safely, I can't recommend these cars enough. Thanks again, Tom!

I’ve always enjoyed your very informative reviews, Tom, which is why I’m a longtime subscriber. This review hit close to home because I’ve been seriously considering the C40. Your comment (i.e. “People aren’t buying sedans like before but apparently, they still like the roofline.”) is very insightful because it explains why I like coupe style SUVs.

My first new car was a 1984 Volvo 244GL in a similar blue color to the car you got. I had it 18 years and only retired it as parts were getting expensive once it passed 15 year. The car saved my butt several time in hard breaking situations. During my time, I was rear ended in city driving with my damage to my car. Absolutely love the safety features and how the car drove on the road. The Kia EV6 with its crazy markup is close in price to the C40. Great to hear it gets its advertised range. Drove 36 miles today but Tesla said I used 55 miles. 😞 A 80% charge if a M3 SR+ is 218 miles but driving range is 170. Another great review of electric cars coming out. If only this parts shortage would go away...

Volvos do not do well in Consumer Reports reliability scores. I have friends that own them and love them, but as a brand, they do have their problems, repairs and maintenance being a serious concern. I love all their designs and would buy one except they are just too expensive both to buy and to maintain. Another great review and profile of a very appealing product all the same. Nice going Tom!

You're correct, Volvo doesn't do great in CR reviews. I have the 2018 XC60 T6 R-Design and so far have had two alarming issues (electronics due to condensation buildup associated with AC and the air suspension). Both were fixed quickly and Volvo extended the warranty for issues like these.

I drove a VW 4ID and was pleasantly surprised. And at 52k its the same financial overall cost of Subaru Outback at 40k and 25mpg. The RAV4 is 50k but MPG is 42 so the yearly cost is probably the highest yearly cost if you drive 10k yr.

Great reviews as always - I'm a long time subscriber, I watch them before any other reviews. One ask, could you include ground clearance for SUVS? There are some of us that take them light/moderate off-roading, camping, etc. It's good to know which are somewhat capable and which are useless (some are lower than cars).

Thank you. Couldn’t agree more on the rear wiper issue here in Victoria. The other thing was the rear window felt like I was looking through a mailbox slot, so I’m getting the XC40. The camera system is one of the best I’ve seen, but I like seeing what’s behind me on the highway. To those of you who complain about range and/or cost, this is a luxury brand. It’s likely to not be the only car in your garage and you will likely have home charging. Would it be better if it was cheaper and had more range? Of course, but we aren’t there yet and I think cheaper EVs might somehow be wishful thinking, as mr Musk is making clear. One big if is charging infrastructure, which is evolving slowly. The other one is back orders. Parts supplies have created long waits and are getting worse due to demand in the face of high fuel prices. There will always be diehard petrol-heads, but even they should try the Volvo - no noise but OMG it’s quick!

I totally agree with you on the XC40 Recharge vs this C40 Recharge. I too value the rear wiper and the sunshade the XC 40 provides that isn't available on the C40. I suspect you could mitigate that with some dark solar film but with the gun-slit rear glass and without a wiper feature, I'd be looking at the XC40 Recharge.

Funny how everyone talks about the problems with charging. I have been driving Polestar 2 for two years now. And it took about one month to rewire mine brain to the new fueling habit. I have no problem with range or charging. I newer had charged from 0-80%. I come home from work, starting at 80% in the morning, with 52% put it in the charger and the solar panel tops it of, if the sun is turned on😉. Otherwise it charges in the night when the electricity is cheaper. On long rides I only charge about 5-12 min when I’m stopping at a gasoline/charge station and going tho have a cup of coffee and a trip to the restroom. Which I also did on my petrol car. So same as I always have done. It’s a new way to think filling the “petrol” on the car. I think this would be a good side of these type of cars to make a video about.. And one particular issue that i have found out about from seeing a lot of videos. Charging curves. That is a very important side of this. I have bought the C40 and the charging curve for ships car is insane. Not the speed (150) but the part that is actually charging with about 140-150w from start to end. I have sen lots of 250w cars starting with 250w end in about 5 minutes going as far down as 60w on a fast charger😮. There is a lot of side effects that no one talks about. I don’t care i the car goes form 0-60 in 000,1 sec. if I could get a car doing this in 8 sec instead a then have more battery life to go further that would be even better! We don’t need 400 horsepower, except for fun. Give me 200-250 and longer travel on a charge. That’s the main purpose for daily commuting!

I was cross shopping this with a few other options up here in Seattle and Tom, you nailed the criticisms on the C40. It's a fantastic vehicle and I very nearly put the money down to reserve one but the rear visibility killed it for me. So close to being the perfect EV for me since I wanted something to stand out against the Teslas you see on every street corner here. The range is manageable but since I'm a huge Volvo enthusiast, I pulled the trigger on a 2022 V60 CC. Maybe in a few years they'll electrify the wagons and have something super compelling to buy.

You mentioned that you were on your way to 250 miles of range with spirited driving. But then you knock the range of the car. Even at the EPA listed 226 miles, the C40 is within striking distance of some of its competitors. But they don’t have 400+ HP… And as you say, it’s got that “Volvoness.” I don’t know, I guess it seems like a worthy trade-off? Safety, build quality, etc… My commute is 80 miles a day, and I live in a cold climate. So as long as winter range is able to get me up to 120 miles on those days I go ski after work, I’m fine. It’ll be full again in the morning.
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 2 жыл бұрын
I knock the range of the C40 because 226 miles of EPA-rated range is less marketable than 280 or so of the AWD Ioniq5 or EV6. Marketing is everything. But I pointed out I was on track for 250 to give people an idea that it might be a conservative number and that they should look into it on forums. With only 12 hours in the car, these things are hard to gauge in a concrete manner. Even in cold weather, you should be good to go. And your "full in the morning" comment is right on target. Charging at home would save you a lot of time at the gas pump.

Ridiculously expensive. In Thailand it's 2.7m baht. That's over double a fully loaded Good Cat, admittedly a smaller car but still

My Volvo C40 has a steering wheel vibration very bad when you drive 65 mph, Felt UNSAFE to drive, especially at high speeds

Certainly not normal. Could be so many things including tire damage. Get it checked ASAP.

@@DrivenCarReviews Yes, I think every driver will know it is not normal. I brought my Volvo C40 to a dealership for the vibration issue 5 times, and both the dealer mechanic and manager, as well as a Volvo engineer, have experienced and acknowledged the vibration issue I've been having, I have all the video evidence to prove that. However, despite contacting Volvo about the issue, they have stopped replying to my emails. I will contact local news and file a Lemon law

It's definitely a Volvo, but the 220-mile range... When are manufacturers coming up with a 400-500 mile range, perfect for selling EVs (no longer a problem with range anxiety).

As a serial Volvo owner, this is the first e.v. I'd consider. I think big oil gas chains ( Exxon, Shell) should get ahead of the curve and place e.v. charging stations at their locations. It would be cool to be able to use my "gas card" to fuel my e.v.

For this car’s $60K+…get yourselves a Tesla and get MORE miles per charge AND the Supercharger network!
@seattleinternationalautosh4284
@seattleinternationalautosh4284 2 жыл бұрын
It's not that simple. Tesla typically overrates its range so that advantage is not as big as some might think. Tesla is not eligible for the federal tax credit. And the legacy automakers have excellent service and parts distribution networks, some thing even diehard Tesla owners complain about. And that Supercharger advantage goes away once it's opened up to everyone, which Tesla says it's going to do.

No tailpipe emissions, but what about battery manufacturing? Will Volvo recycle the battery after it stops working? You should make a video about the complete battery manufacturing cycle, lithium wars, water usage, etc. The best way to save energy is to DRIVE LESS.

Cells (built to Volvo specs) are supplied by LGChem (manufactured in Poland) and CATL (China for now, Germany targeted by the end of the year). Pack is assembled in Belgium. Pretty high quality. A simple Google search will get you this and a dozen other articles just like it. www.electrive.com/2020/03/06/volvo-launches-battery-assembly-in-ghent/
