I am glad somebody is teaching middle aged and elderly folks on what to do and what not to do. There are a ton of 20/30 year old, half dressed youngsters on KZbin teaching all sorts of complicated exercises that could very well send me to a rehab center! :-)

Just because these guys are not young doesn't mean they won't send you to the Emergency room. I hear you. I am 68 and thought often about starting an exercise channel. Stretching is a very bad thing to do to your body.

Having Osteoporosis and fractured 2 vertebrae earlier this year, i did 4-1/2 months of PT. Excellent therapists and I am doing great. At home between sessions, I did their exercises and added things I’ve learned from you. Reviewed the exercises with my PT’s and they approved all you do. Thank you for your excellent videos. Your recommendations are spot on and it’s like getting great PT for free!! Keep up the good work, guys!

I am 68 and I would never stretch, not since I hurt myself stretching. I have been injury free since I stopped stretching. I had a REAL doctor tell me once to NOT stretch. HE said regular exercise is all you need to maintain full range of motion.

Maintain what you have or improve to what you could have? Two different things. At a young 59, and very active, I can say that there is also a need for over 50 advice tailored to the younger seniors. A lot of us want to get in shape before our later years to improve those years because then it will be much harder to do.

Amazing, as always. Got myself some minor injuries and niggles through my yoga practice. Bye-bye lotus pose! Modifying a lot of other asanas based on your sage advice. I tell people about your content in real life all the time. It's honestly life-changing if followed. I'm in the UK, with a crumbling NHS and insane referral times. It's invaluable what you do. I'll shut-up now!

We have insane referral times without national Healthcare. For many wait is endless as people can never get care because they lack access to healthcare at all. With medical insurance through my job and I paid extra it was going to cost me 3000 for whats considered a routine possibly lifesaving test. Haven't been able to schedule it yet.

Loved to hear the reference to Stu McGill! I had sciatic issues to the point of being crippled and on a list for surgery after various shots and physio didn't help. I got Stu McGill's book "Back Mechanic", watched every video I could find of his and worked on trying to follow his routine. It took a a year, but no more pain, getting my agility back, lost some weight, feeling so much better! Hid "big three" really help. For us over 60 folks some physiotherapists have a brief routine, if it doesn't work they just shrug. Appreciate this channel as well!

We live and learn! The military exercises are aimed at very young people who can probably get away with the damage caused by incorrect exercises at least for the duration of their service. Its only when they get older that the damage becomes obvious. Thats why I follow this and one other channel dedicated to us senior people. I trust Bob and Brad (and now Mike) not to steer me wrong 😀

I'm 65 and I do all the exercises you warned about in my 1 hour plus of yoga per day. I never go beyond pain or discomfort. I have CMT and I have stayed away from doctors and physical therapists and that is why I am still able to do what I do. I have seen so many others with CMT destroy there bodies with the recommendations of their doctors and now they are unable to walk.

I tried planks recently - 6 months after laminectomy spinal surgery...and the result was disastrous. Many years ago I did planks for my transverse abdominus and they worked great for removing back pain. Just shows that what works at one stage of your life can be harmful at a later stage.

One thing I have noticed, the people I know that have had back surgery, went to an orthopedic surgeon. Non of these people can walk straight or have more problems than they had to before their surgery. Orthopedic surgeons should never do back surgery. I went to a neurologist. I do everything still to this day. Had my surgery in 1996.

Surgeons like to cut. I knew a lady in school who had had 24 back surgeries, all done by the same doctor. Most of them were to fix whatever happened in the previous surgery. At one point, she has also gotten a terrible infection during the surgery and hospital stay. When I knew her, she had to wear a thing that looked like a small refrigerator, to keep her body straight, and was not allowed to turn her head to either side. She was only about 40.

I'm not supposed to walk due to a broken back ( three places). If I would've listened to tunnelvision medical morons I'd be wheelchair bound for life. Luckily, over thirty years ago I met this chinese doctor who taught me about zhan zhuang. Amongst other things, it's known to heal bones and increase bone density. I could sit and that was plenty enough to start. Took me a year but....I can practice vinyasa yoga if I want and walk 7 miles easily. They call me a medical wonder. I call them idiots. Took them 5 all messed up surgeries to realize and admit there's better stuff than their Vesalius based crap and fat wallets.

Thank you for this reminder how vital it is to spare the lumbar spine. My herniations don’t need to be further taxed! I am having marked success with mat Pilates. Must do a few modifications with bent knees instead of 45 degree angle. As I strengthen my core, I am finding success in ability to do these with straight legs. If the pain is not present with the 45 degree any longer, do I do the more difficult maneuver to be truer to the Pilates method, or do the less challenging to spare the potential for lower back irritation? This channel is so helpful, thank you very much for your positively golden content.

Last year a very simple exercise raptured my upper arm muscle to more than 50 % . The pain came the next day not the day I did that exercise. It was putting the fingertips on each side on each shoulder and rotating the then folded arms forward and backward . That was enough to get hurt. After eight months it is still not completely healed without surgery.

First thing is get a back stretcher preferably a three way adjustable. The most important thing is reestablishing the "arch" in your lower spine. Arch is inward not outward. Do this for at least 20 minutes every day. Take copper supplements and get a copper infused support belt and put it on for several minutes a day. Wear it around the house. Follow these guys gentle exercises without pissing off that nerve in your hip. A must is using Tumeric for anti-inflammation. Inflammation equals severe pain. So take Advil. I promise it will subside.
