Back in 97 I had a near fatal aneurysm that burst in my head. At one point after they saved my life I remember being floating in the Hospital corridor. I was separated from Brain and body. I could see, hear and think. The thinking was like speaking allowed?. There was a wall between me and my body and brain. I wasn’t interested in the flesh and blood container lying on the bed connected to a life support machine. I was in front of my brother and this nurse. I remember what he said to the nurse and what she said back. The Red light was flashing above my hospital door in the corridor. My brother said What is happening? The nurse said we think your brother is trying to breath on his own?. The way I could see was like looking out of a ball of energy or the orb state. I was the orb I was inside this orb. This is how I can describe how it was to visualise things?. The only thing I wasn’t doing was the respiration process as I was separated from my flesh and blood body. And I wasn’t interested in that thing lying there in that room. As it wasn’t me. I was in the corridor floating.

This is what’s referrred to be the term NDE, or Near-Death Experience. There are thousands of these on YoiTube; millions have experienced it. The jig is up, for the scientific/secular materialist. It’s over…has been for a century, even though our many disciplines refuse to recognize it. The philosopher-theologians? were right all along.

The Truth The Illumination of Conscience written in 2011 by author Jeffrey M. Simoneaux This was described in great detail about what and how the reality and nature of the universe truly is and that our perceived reality is profoundly different. We are truly beings of light and energy and our senses are transmitters designed to read their code and our brains are computers that use that code to create our false perceived reality.

@Psicólogo Miguel Cisneros Thanks for asking...Hi I havn't watched this video in a while and my recollection is vague and difficult to recall. My comments above are per other scientist perception of reality boiled down to quantum soup of waves and particles influenced by subconscious and less by consciousness. I sense that reality is based on perception and choice. I also sense I can change my perception of what we call reality with new intentions and elevated emotions that open doors to new possibility. The emotional aspect of being human with these perceptions is the tricky part for me.

This is absolutely one of the most fascinating discussions and conversations I’ve ever seen on the nature of reality. It appears there is a merge of many different schools of thought happening here. The eastern philosophies, the new age ideologies surrounding the idea of the law of attraction and the quantum understandings of frequencies and vibrations, and the mixture of early religious dogma in its primitive attempt at explaining the natural world. Somehow this theory finds a thread between all of it! Fascinating. Also, regarding the section on psychedelics being a tool to access different “interfaces” in this user interface PERFECTLY describes the experience. I’ve always believed that a psychedelic experience was more than just my brain producing a visual auditory concoction for me to enjoy, but that something far more profound and real is taking place. You’re actually opening your pineal glad to other frequencies or interfaces and actually acquiring either a higher level of consciousness, or it’s a loophole in having the “mask” and curtain wiped away and your peering into the inter-workings of our three dimensional reality. Just incredible.

My theory is this: When you dream you see lots of beings with seemingly their own awareness, you interact with them and they seem separate to you. In reality all the characters in your dream are created by one consciousness, your consciousness. You realise this when you wake up. But in dreams your consciousness is fragmented to create all areas of the dream world. Maybe this reality works like the dream reality and we are all versions of one consciousness experiencing itself through different vehicles.

I'm an RN long-term meditator and student of non-dualistic Advaita Vedenta. I've never heard of Dr. Hoffman before this interview. I appreciate his scientific perspective and offerings to the materialistic perspectives of cognitive neuroscience and the hard problem of consciousness, however there is absolutely nothing he's presenting that is any different from non-dualistic ancient scriptures. The major differences are the language used, math and the scientific perspective. In my opinion, these scriptures explain physicality, mind, and pure consciousness-which is considered the ultimate reality, better than any scientific theory or explanation I’ve encountered to this day. Most ancient texts speak of a fundamental oneness, or a unitary experience beyond matter, time and space, that is omnipresent and eternal, called pure consciousness. Pure consciousness is obscured by mind; mind is referred to as the great deceiver of the nature of reality. Meditation and other more specific subtle science techniques were given to humanity in order to transcend the limitations of mind, and experience more expansive aspects of consciousness-the layers of which are explained in incredible detail, beyond individual perceptional limitations, resulting in non-dualistic awareness considered to be the fundamental nature of reality. This is why peak experiences during meditation, near death experiences and some plant induced ethneogen experiences have many seemingly mind trippy similarities-which is exactly the point, to expand awareness of consciousness beyond materialism. With the ultimate goal resulting in a permanent transcendence of dualistic experience while in the body. Most world religions have been fashioned after individuals who spout this message about unitary reality/oneness. The dogma, superstition, and ritualistic elements of religions get added on later by those who don’t understand or comprehend the precise point of these teachings. Since childhood I've had many odd experiences non-drug induced experiences. Since I've been meditating I've had more than a handful of unitary experiences during seated meditation, and a few, while interacting with others. Returning back to normal, l consider lower, awareness is a total mind fuck. You can't forget these experiences. It's sad to come back, but it unlocks other aspects of the mind; intuition is greatly expanded along with emotional intelligence & self-regulation, cognitive and emotional empathy, and compassion for others regardless of how much you may disagree with their actions, or words. This is how people evolve and become more human. I really enjoyed Dr. Hoffman’s scientific contributions mathematics and explanations; however, I really think that the point of human experience is to individually evolve our consciousness which has a dramatically positive affect on the world around us. It will really be interesting to see what additional technological advances develop from his studies. I hope he's successful in expanding our materialistic paradigm because if you haven't had any non-materialistic experiences most people struggle to think, or outright deny the possibility of a non-materialistic realm. Thanks for this interview Zdogg.

Zdogg, if you're inclined read the book Kundalini Vidya, the Science of Spiritual Transformation written by Joan Harrigan. She's a western trained psychologists who writes, in significant detail, about the subjective scientific process of spiritual evolution, mind and pure consciousness from an experiential perspective. You may find it enlightening, pun intended.

@Urayis wish l she studied under a true Sadguru for 30 years. His specialty was Traditional Kundalini Science (TKS). Imo, the TKS part is what the real Sadgurus rarely if ever talk about, but it involves providing specific practices for each individual. His lineage for the first time authorized her to write a comprehensive text from the perspective of Yoga, Vedanta and Traditional Kundalini Science. Of course the realization of Moksha, either at the moment of death or while embodied resulting in Juvanmukta, or Nirvakalpa Samadh if you prefer Advaita Vedanta terminology, is the goal that can only be realized through direct experience. What makes her text unique is that everything in it is based on direct experience, and she outlines in great detail the subtle body architecture and prana functions necessary to allow Kundalino Shakti, the divine within, to evolve the individual more easily. In my experience, it makes realization through Ramana Maharishi direct inquiry more attainable as the budhi is cleared of the sativa, raja, and tamas gunas. Since I've attended the Sadgurus retreats, conducted at his pupils home, I've had increasingly frequent unitary consciousness experiences, as well as experiential realizations of many things written in her book. The book is not theoretical in any way, even though it explains all relevant philosophical theories, in truth it's a comprehensive experiential roadmap, imho and experience.

Btw, that dude who calls himself sadguru is scary creepy. Real Sadgurus never advertise themselves as Sadgurus, or even your guru. Their only goal is to introduce you to the divine within, as the true guru. This is quality is what makes individuals like Ramana, Nisgaratta, Ananda Mayi Ma, Ramikrishna, and others so unique. They embodied these universal teachings and their actions were completely congruent with them, because in truth, they were soley animated by the divine.

For thousands of years Non Dual saints, mystics, avatars, Jesus, Budda, Lao Tzu, and representatives of millenary spiritual traditions have not gone extinct, what they represent is "a quantum leap in human evolution" (César Teruel) Consciousness does not evolve. One of the best interviews, if not the best, that I heard not only on KZbin, but also on TV or Radio. That's science at its highest level. If you combine what Donald Hoffman says with what Immanuel Kant said about space and time and the difference between noumena and phenomena, then you understand why Kant was an absolute genius. Thank you so much for your fantastic work.

It is good. However at 14:00. 'The moon does not exist when I don't look' 'Thats exaxtly right' That both contradicts other statements he makes and is exactly wrong. He goes on to state space and time do not exist outside our minds. This denies noumena in a literal sense. We are left with an absurdity. Easily disproved via experimentation. One must ask what he is then refering to. Hence my other comment. This is another over extension of some good thinking. Phenomena are dictated by noumena however badly. They are a massive reduction of real things. Denying the reality of them doesn't work. He needs to clearly define what he means and avoid redefining common terms if he has a valid point here.
@DHorse
@DHorse 4 жыл бұрын
So I assert your perception of space time is a modelling tool. It does indeed exist in a direct sense. What it is exactly or its cause is a science / philosophy question but each (space and time) is a real thing. It IS objective reality and noumena whatever our minds do with it.

@DHorse
@DHorse 4 жыл бұрын
I work with a containment model of reality where scale and size are critical. What we percieve is entirely valid at this scale. The noumena are well represented in our perception. A game displaying on a screen is a direct product of cause and effect. It exists, is real, and is running a very bad model. That we must percieve a reduction and would fail manipulating the electricity is an obvious point that does not support his denial of perception as reflecting objective reality. It's highly reduced nature does not lead to the conclusion it is false. It is a valid internal model not objective reality. Obviously your mind is part of this reality. I don't suggest that current and physics and metaphysics is correct but that his position is contradictory. In what way does his mathematics (which I will look at) show this? He never says. However mathematics is even more of a reduction than mental phenomena. It could well lead to a deeper understanding but like most philosophers he goes off rails with his favorite domain. He over extends the meaning. He is interpreting the math to serve his spiritually fun view of the real it appears.

Why??? Consciousness is biological. In the brainstem resides a structure called the reticular formation. When this is stimulated, either from the outside, or from the thinking processes in the cortex (which it in turn stimulates - a circular process) then the organism is conscious or aware. There is nothing spooky going on as some "theorists" like to have it!!! Yes, there are levels of consciousness.

@@GeoCoppens You are another "materialist" person because what you're saying is that physical matter gives rise to consciousness. If so, how do you account for the fact that in a simple double-slit quantum mechanics experiment, the very act of observing causes your "physical" particles to change form? But if you don't observe them, they don't change form. Are they alive and aware that you're observing them and only wanna fuck with your mind if they know you're observing them? No! That would be ridiculous!! Particles are not "alive"!!! In fact, they're not really there at all, as scientists are slowly finding out more and more by the day. The smaller the sizes of the particles that they probe, the more they're finding out that they're all just empty space, and that what we all have originally thought of as "physical" matter are nothing more than a cloud of probability....in other words, your everyday "physical" world is just a bunch of DATA. And, here's the kicker: the ONLY environment where we know of that's made up of nothing but data is a Virtual Reality. We are all Sims residing in this universal Virtual Simulation, and things only appear and feel "physical" to us because we're observing them / experiencing them from OUR point of view.....just like the characters in a sim game like World Of Warcraft thinking that everything they see and feel is real to them because they can't see beyond THEIR reality into YOUR reality. Your consciousness playing as those characters in those games shape them and their world. I personally found that in order for me to get intouch with the true me. I need to be able to practice three thing's. (1) mindfulness meditation. (2) An honest review of my day/evening, or bight. Which ever fits. Reviewing ones day is not about beating self up. It's like if you owned a supply business, one needs to take an daily inventory to see how you stand. In mindfulness meditation it's purpose is to be able to get as close to being alone with self, and only self as best as possible, and not adding to a thought that comes. The only exception maybe experiencing being with ones Creator. It's not necessarily important that one believes in a Creator. It was scary at first when I began to experience a quieter mind. I had no idea how many were living in my head rent free. Untill I started evicting them. The little boogers keep trying too sneek back in. Sometimes I find myself inviting one or two back in. But it's not to difficult to kick them out. I've been reviewing my day for about 8 years, and mindfulness meditation for about 6 years. By far many, many, many peoples can't, or not willing to give up precious time for what has been referred too, as naval gazing. I'm retired and have a dog. He joins me in meditation at times. I'm luck, and blessed. The third I'm not going into. However I will add that I couldn't have achieved the third, without achieving the first two. I believe you'll be amazed before your half way through.

There is a fundamental problem of self-refutation with this thesis, in that it uses evolution, mathematics and science to make the case that the human brain is not disposed to perceive reality as it actually is, but if the human brain is not disposed to perceive reality as it actually is, what basis do we have for assuming that evolution, mathematics and science are accurate representations of reality? This is the problem of the Cretan liar paradox: if our brains are lying to us all the time, how do we know that they aren't lying to us when they tell us that we are lying to ourselves?

It is a very valid point and a great one that destroys rational materialistic models. For people that have tasted higher levels of reality in their subtle bodies and who have gone into the state of the Atma or even paramAtma it beca clear that this level of reality is more akin to a collective dream state, no more or less real than a dream

The way I see it, we have a capacity for occasional rational thought that enhances our ability us to survive and reproduce. Living in a post-scarcity regime frees us to use that rationality for play (mathematics, art, etc). The fact that we experientially believe a lie does not mean we have no capacity to see it rarely or collectively as a lie.

We know that Mathematics are true because of the effect that we perceive, we see a representation of reality relative to something but never directly, that is why he always gives the example of a computer desktop being an interface but not the truth behind the interface, its purpose is to more efficiently navigate in the computing environment (basically 0 and 1 being electricity and not-electricity). Basically that means that our mathematics and theories are simply languages to communicate/express/convey an aspect of truth/reality but never in a literal sense, furthermore even if we can communicate in the same language and understand each other it does not mean that we are correct on our assumptions since our very senses and the tools we are using are only approximating "truth" to us, even our tools and how we use them are relative, never direct, when you measure something you practically throw something at it (output) and you receive something back (input) therefore you can never get 100% accurate on your experiments. Also our brains do not lie, they just filter out information, not only our brains but our senses combined with our brains as well, Dr Hoffman simply suggests that we filter-out information that does not serve us to our survival needs due to the theory of evolution. I personally am unsure if I agree with the later but I surely agree with the rest.

Hoffmans remix of Nonduality and Neoplatonism is brilliant. The way he takes the two worlds of science and monist/nondual metaphysics and brings them back together (they never should have been parted) is genius and long overdue. However, it is important to note that much of what he is doing is translating semantics between science and classical nondual/monistic metaphysics. For example - Conscious Agents = "souls/Atman." This is the metaphor of Indras web turned into a mathematical diagram rather than a metaphor of drops of dew on a web. Souls being subdivisions of the infinite monad/brahman (the totality of consciousness). The more finite the soul, the more finite the manifestation in consciousness (atoms < cells < animals < people < ? Angels? Gods? GOD?). This brings the two groups into a place where we can have a more complete perspective. As a nondualist with a strong interest in science, I agree substantially with the majority of what Hoffman says, and any dissagreement likely stems from a difference of language and metaphor, not necessarily because he is wrong. Anyway, there really is nothing new under the sun. We are all just cows chewing cud.

Wonderful interview! I've been following Don Hoffman for a few years now, and agree with those who say this is a great interview for getting to the heart of his perspective quickly and clearly. I'd like to add that what Donald Hoffman is doing mathematically, Tom Campbell is doing both internally in term of a scientific exploration of consciousness, and physically as a series of double-slit experiments that recently began at CalTech (I believe). I've been following Tom Campbell for years too, and see his and Hoffman's perspectives as almost 100% compatible. A discussion between the two men would be very interesting indeed! Is there any similarity to David Bohm's implicate order and Robert Lanza's Biocentrism ?
@tobyhdr
@tobyhdr 4 жыл бұрын
@@bastianray6334 My answer can only be that of a layman, but for what it's worth, I'll try. I only have the shallowest exposure to implicate order and Biocentrism (brief glance at both theories just now), but do see some similarities, particularly with Biocentrism. Perhaps, then, my best shot at a helpful answer is by sketching out virtual-reality theory as pithily as I can. In Campbell's terms, consciousness is not infinite (he rejects infinity, sees it as impossible). He asserts a pixel- or digital-like granularity to consciousness. In a sense, this is a little like atomism: there is an indivisible something. That this something is not 'physical' - there is no actual spacetime - does not mean this digital principle of indivisibility is different from that of atomism. Metaphorically then, we can view this 'stuff' or granularity of consciousness as the 'bits' with which consciousness can create order or patterns. That gives us an elegant non-dualistic framework. Our 'physical' universe is thus a 'virtual' or information-based construct of and by consciousness - much like a game - through which consciousness can have and learn from richly informative experiences that help it, both as 'souls', or "individuated units of consciousness", or "conscious agents" to become more loving, or "to become love". In biocentric terms - by way of comparison - life is the driving force behind the game. In Campbell's model, scientific endeavour is uncovering the ruleset - the 'objective' truths - of our virtual reality. But the game is not hard-coded. It is procedural, or evolving code/mathematics, that started with the Big Bang, aka the Initial Conditions, and evolved more or less as science has thus far determined, but with life (consciousness) driving it, nudging it whenever it deems necessary, then actively participating once sufficiently complex biological entities evolved to be 'used' as avatars in the game.

@@tobyhdr If you want an update to David Bohm then study Professor Basil J. Hiley. Hiley is buddies with Sir Roger Penrose. Reject this "pop" science b.s. Nondualism is best explained by noncommutative geometry. Stanford Linear Accelerator Center figured this out - study Eddie Oshins. Just keep researching - don't rely on the "Marketing" of science. Does Tom Campbell or Don Hoffman discuss abrupt global warming and the ecological crisis? Western physics is not an accurate representation of reality - otherwise we would not have the fastest destruction or biological annihilation of life on Earth today - same with Robert Lanza's "biocentric" vision. A similar view was espoused by the book "Biocosm" - it's all modern Westernized or eurocentric b.s. that ignores the hard truth of all our "externalities" of science.

Beautiful representation of Left Brain Dominance. 🤔🤔 The idea of using abstractions alone (mathematics) to make conclusions on the “true” nature of existence demonstrates the one sidedness of this manner of thought. Mathematics itself, is an abstraction of the mind just as any other layer of reality we experience on a daily basis. Numbers themselves came into our reality field as an abstract means of making sense of what we see! (This is where a logical mind begins noticing paradox) 🌱 Thus, what value does an argument such as this hold when the fundamental basis of one’s negating reality, stems from the same source which you are stating you reject outright? Paradoxical to the nth degree.. What we experience is a result of everything we have conditioned ourselves to see, expectations, patterns, and creative imagination, along with all phylogenetic conditioning all playing a composite role in what we call reality. These are the means in which we make what little sense of the world we can, and to base the value of the world in whether or not what we see is “true” or a “representation” of the mind, demands a strict definition of what is “truth” and what part it plays in the unfolding of our lives. This was simply part of the equation, there is more to life than what we see, but what we see determines what we inevitably become.

Check out "Pointing out the Dharmakaya" by Khenchen Thrangu. Not a beginner book on buddhism. But if you're search for truth is strong, this book is indispensable and brings truth to every moment of life, whether you are in deep contemplation or taking care for patients at a hospital. The Dharmakaya is similar to what Hoffman described as this infinite pool of consciousness. But buddhist don't spend their days talking about it (like in this podcast) but rather experiencing the fullness of it. It is different from the Hindu concept of universal consciousness, as it is refutes the existence of an independent self. This view doesn't hold true under investigation and neuroscience also disproves it. It is the view that the buddhist tradition has come to verify through countless meditators. The view of emptiness. All phenomena (including self, objects, etc.) lack inherent existence and everything exists interdepenedtly. This view is harmonious with quantum physics, and was realized empirically, though experience. It is true that subjectivity is fallible, but only a fool would completely dispense it. We just have never learned to use it and we have never looked at our own mind! I think the only way to understand consciousness is through consciousness itself, that is through your own experience. The realization of it is far superior to the conceptual elaboration of it (which becomes a memory and fades in impermanence). It is like talking about the taste of chocolate. It is in the realm of subjectivity, and only a crazy person would deny this wonderful subjective experience we are having. I share this with you because I'm part of the 15% of engineers interested in these subjects. And this view has liberated me in a way. I realized that, even though its fun to think about physics, metaphysics, biology, maths, neuroscience, etc. All of this is knowledge, and through this we will never experience the whole, we will always be thirsty for more. On the other hand, to view reality as it is, to refine your faculty of mindfulness and attention to see the nature of reality, this allows you to experience the whole (Dharmakaya) while you are thinking or not thinking, in any activity, as this nature never changes. The nature of self-liberating emptiness. If you are interested in consciousness and meditation this book could really change your perspective. There's a lot of new age talk on non-duality, but no methods for actually realising it. This book is extremely practical and deeply philosophical; concise and to the point. It directly points to the nature of mind. I wish you well on your path.

@@rohlay00 I’m interested in what you said about the difference between Hinduism and Buddhism takes on universal consciousness. Can you clarify, is it Hinduism that supports the notion of an independent self? I’m not well versed but my interpretation at surface level was that Hinduism believes in the universal consciousness/source coined Brahman and that all living creatures are little mini off shoots of this brahman coined atman, and then death is sort of returning back to the universal source. As far as there being a true “self” I agree, upon close inspection the notion of a true “I” fades and we are left with the experience of pure awareness -emptiness as you mentioned in reference to Buddhist description.

Monday 3 pm, I hear a phone ringing on a table next to me in my office. I look at it and see a name flash ie "Vaibhav" . It's the same name as one of my friends and hence I remember it. I come back home and go to sleep. I have vivid multiple dreams but the only thing I remember or put an effort to recall was unmistakable pronouncement of a name in the last dream; Mrs Lamput. I wake up at 3 am and wonder what a strange name,never heard of it before and I don't watch television, so let's Google it. I find out it's just a cartoon series and not any person. But wait, the creator's name of the series is the same as the one that flashed on the phone the day before; "Vaibhav". This is just one of the spooky things out of thousands that I have experienced. Maybe the matrix is on to something. Maybe synchronicity is more than just pattern recognition. A coincidence happens once, twice or thrice not hundreds of times. :)

I’ve experienced the same thing when I was younger. I remember when I was 4-5 I had scientists study me and my cognitive abilities. My mother got scared as she is a religious person. I understand why she did but I wish she allowed them to continue. As I got older I also sought the truth but along the way I allowed the world, as we perceive it, take hold of me. Don’t allow that to happen to you young man.

The funny thing is Neo and everyone in Zion never left the matrix. They were always just in another level of the matrix. This sinks the whole red pill, blue pill analogy. All this theorizing is just like building a new level of understanding while being inside the matrix the whole time. Thinking you are seeing what is true is just the perspective you prefer, so this theory satisfies that itch for some people allowing them to stop questioning. I like the philosophical school of quietism. Quietism seeks to answer the questions of the mind so it will leave us doubtless and sincere in our relationship to perception. In this case this theory is what will quiet his mind.

Being brand new to these concepts I am having a hard time understanding what you guys are talking about. What I can grasp is fascinating and I have just had a listen to Bernardo Kastrup also. I really hope modern science finds a way of developing all this because it will be the greatest discovery we have ever made and I hope it happens in my lifetime as I am in my 40s now. People who fail to let go of their materialist views will stubbornly hold on to their older ways which will slow down progress. Personally I am ready to absorb some kind of spirituality in my life as I have always been a science geek and I guess an atheist. Imagine how we could change our world if we really understood all the implications?

I'm not so sure it's science that will bring us there. You could learn about Tibetan Buddhism, which has many of the same conclusions. This world is an illusion, there is a greater reality via consciousness.

There is only consciousness which expresses as energy in its various forms. Theologians and ancient philosophers have long know the metaphysical, aka the Spiritual, was primary and ‘a priori’ and foundational for all reality. Spirit is eternal. Matter is spiritual energy and does not ‘die’, merely changes form. Atheism is a misconstrual of categories. God does not ‘exist’, as a merely higher ‘being’ among beings -rather God is the Ground of Being itself.

well they understand that it has a more immediate, consistent and instant payoff or gratification whereas space/time and pondering it will lead to probably very little to no gratification and can take a lifetime and may lead to madness. so they are basically smarter than most people, they tend to be able to live in the moment which is something most people lose very quickly and is the cause of most of our problems which are usually self inflicted

@@solcutta3661 that doesnt mean to stop questioning things and ponder about life, a child does not have the mind and ego of an adult person which starts to think more independently, but we sure as hell can learn from children to be present and cherishing every small bit what occures in your life and also going on about life with a childlike curiosity and playfulness. Pondering and thinking about life can also add to seeing the world as more wonderous than it already is and can aid you in profoundly changing your views of the world by firmly cementing positive perspectives into your life (depending on how you use your mind)

Is this theory epistemology or metaphysics? I listened to the whole 2 hours and I still can't tell. Does anyone know what Dr Hoffman's views on free will are? It also strikes me as a form of illusionism - if the interface gives an illusory representation of the world, how can one trust the thoughts, ideas, observations, mathematics one comes up with while using that illusory interface. Just saying the theory is built on maths doesn't get you off that hook. Genuine questions - not trolling.
