Welcome to the last chapter in the "How to Process Your Emotions" course! (Buy the full course with workbook here: courses.therapynutshell.com). I can't believe it's over! By this point you’ve learned over 30 skills that you can use to process through your emotions.
But the goal of this course isn’t just to feel better, it’s also to get better at feeling. To get good at having emotions, working through them and then making choices that lead to a rich and fulfilling life.
When we take a step back and look at the process of resolving emotions, we start with identifying the emotion, then move into slowing it down, accepting the emotion and exploring it, all of these steps are important. But the whole purpose of emotional regulation is to help us take helpful action. Action often helps us free up that stored ‘movement’ inside us. Look at the word “emotion” e-motion, the “mot” comes from Latin and means “to move”, the same root that is in words like motivation and motor, it is something that inspires movement. Our emotions, even the ones that can be considered “negative” (or uncomfortable) can be powerful motivating forces to help us move and change.

In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love www.churchofjesuschrist.org/c...

Emma, you are really a blessing to our family!!! My husband is struggling with severe anxiety and depression, and I am fighting depression. We have found so much help from your videos. Things are starting to change, and your videos have helped more than medicine or counseling at this point. Thank you for going down this path and helping so many people like us who have never heard of any of these things before. It is eye opening, refreshing and gives so much hope. God bless!

To me it sometimes feel that taking hours with a therapist for 3 month wouldn't help as much as one video of Emma. I feel addressed. She exactly mentions what's on my mind. That is why I like her so much. And instead of having to be on appointments I can choose myself when to watch them. When I feel the need. I am seeing a doctor for medication monthly just to make clear. But especially in times of war so much people need this help so badly but can not afford or are in dangerous situations. So this is why she is so a bless. And finally sometimes you do not talk about some sort of thoughts fearing they are strange. So I felt so much relief when she onced addressed them in a video. @TherapyinaNutshell

I lost my mom September 28th of this year and I’ve been watching your videos ever since. You have been such a huge help to me as I struggle with a variety of mental illnesses aswell. I am learning to feel my emotions, even though they are very painful since losing my mom and whenever fear arrises (usually fear of uncertainty) I remind myself that I have to accept uncertainty- the things I cannot change. It’s a process, especially with grief, but you have helped me in more ways than I can express. Thank you so much for all that you do.

One of the biggest realizations I had in my ED recovery with emotional processing is that I don't actually feel comfortable with any strong emotion. My sister sent me a care packet during that time and I was so touched/happy that it made me severly uncomfortable and I needed to use coping mechanism to handle it. 😅

I started the first lesson in December 2021 with the intention to do one every day. It is September 2022, and I have a notebook, with long date gaps in between, filled with invaluable knowledge as I just completed this final lesson. I find myself wanting to feel heavy like I could only grow while I was participating in these videos. Like I have to fully comprehend, memorize, and apply this in every situation moving forward now that I have completed it. I think that was a big reason why I was always hesitant to progress through it. I knew I would feel that so long as I was "still in it" I would be getting better, and that would stop when the videos ran out. But reflecting on my life over the past 6-7 months, how much has changed, how much my emotional regulation and self-awareness, and mindfulness have improved, shows me it's all a process, and the process never really ends, it just gets easier or harder depending on the wolf you feed in your head, the choice you make. Even if I don't always succeed at making the right choice, even if I know what it is, the awareness that the choice is being made, and that there are steps after to still continue on a path of mental and emotional success, has made all the difference in the world, and I will carry it with me for the rest of my life. Emma, I cannot thank you enough for the journey you have allowed me to experience, for being such a gentle, comforting guide that I at no point doubted the route that you were leading me on (which has not been the case for other therapists I have experienced). Providing this for the world, free of charge is the kind of humanitarian work far too many people, myself included at times, take for granted and need far more than they know. You have allowed me to feel proud of who I am, and truly find love for myself, even if just in bits and pieces now, for the first time in my entire life. I see the path before me, I continue to learn, and I continue to grow. Thank you, sincerely, for providing the means for me to find this.

This course has been truly transformative for me, particularly as I reside in a conflict-stricken region where discussing mental health is considered a luxury and carries a stigma. Growing up, we were taught to suppress our emotions and never process them. However, grew up a lot in the last few months, and it all started with those first videos you posted on processing emotions. I'm going to get back and watch all of them and do the homework. @@TherapyinaNutshell hi dr. I would like to ask if you could talk about personality “parts” and internal family systems (IFS) therapy. I don’t think I have DID but at the same time I feel fragmented. I’m not sure how to make sense about what I feel, so I’m doing research. What I really want is to heal and find the best treatment. I have parts of me that I don’t feel they “belong” to me. It complicated and complex for sure. Sometimes I get triggered and anger takes over my body, then I feel ashamed, and sad and feel that I want to get rid of that part. I come from a home where violence was frequent, my mom had severe clinical depression, narcissism and delusions, dad was physically violent with everyone. There was no sexual abuse. All of us 4 suffer depression, anxiety, ptsd, I believe my sister has BPD or narcissism, all of us kids became suicidal at some point in our life. Please consider a video about this topic. Thank you 🙏

Not feeling my feelings has been a life long problem for me. Supressed anger led me to pick my skin, clench my teeth, stress my stomach etc. But i was seen as the reasonable child, compared to my patronizing condescending bully narcissistic sister.. i left the house to work after college. She stayed unemployed for 5 years now. Responsibility has been her monster since childhood. Because of some uncontrollable events i had to live at my parents' house for 7 months. I was going there on vacations as well but it has never been this much. My therapist used to say "when you are angry, you have to live your anger" i would say "but then there would be a big fight" he would say "let there be a fight then, if your sister cant handle any kind of resentment or anger feelings from other people, that is her problem, not yours" After all these years of tolerating her problems her difficult life. I snapped. I cried myself to sleep two days prior to this event. I was telling myself "dont take it seriously, she is in a bad place" but then i realized we were being taken advantage from. Not just me, my parents too. When someone realizes whatever he says or does people will tolerate them, they become unstoppable bullies. People need to know that they are hurting, that other people have real flesh hearts too. And every one is living their own hell in this planet. I didnt lose control or anything. I just got angry out loud. And when she saw me angry she couldnt believe that i was having feelings and called our parents (they were out of town) to inform them i need to be hospitalised :D because i was crazy and i was hitting my head to walls or something, she told my mom a story she created in order to increase the reaction she gets from them, in order to find herself a supporter. This feels so sad. Because she did this before to my mother as well, she knew this side of her. My mother was surpised too, she thought maybe she is hallucinating. It is so difficult for a mother to witness this ugliness in her child, so i understand her effort to find good hearted excuses for these behaviours of my sister. After i snapped, my sister stopped talking to me completely. Since i have no solution for her problems, this is probably the best for my own mental health. God may help her journey..

This is the second video I've watched you present. Consequently, I intend to watch the entire 'emotions' series that you refererence. The way you present is thought provoking and engaging. I am sincere when I say it is 'simply profound'. To me that is beauty. I know that many will benefit from this sharing of a foundational, yet often alluding component of the human experience namely, personal responsibility. It's interesting to me that we need to be educated about emotions too. Unresolved hurts and our unwillingness to acknowledge them fuel our ineffective coping. Pretty messy stuff. We are such intricate beings. Life has many distractions. It's easy to forget values and meaning today. I'm so very grateful that not everyone does. It takes all of us, me included. Thank you.

I just had to say, my therapist ist from school of Viktor Frankl and yesterday I started hearing Man's search for meaning. Just an hour ago before I found this Video I was hearing the book and heard the part you quoted and was struck by it. What a coincidence, all leading to this point, maybe I just see the patterns because I look for them since I started seeing double digits of the clock, but this just struck right now and I had to share it. Thank you soooo so much Emma ❤️

You’re a treasure.✨ Thank you for your videos. The authentic kindness in your heart and voice is a great example to those developing a kinder voice inside toward themselves. It’s granted me many moments of insight and encouragement over the last couple years. Never stop. Know every day that all your work and effort on top of taking care of your family is thoroughly appreciated and making a huge difference. And it’s exactly what this world needs more of. Thank you so much for this video! I’ve been practicing mindfulness these many months, and I can see how I’ve been slowly improving in observing my emotions rather than reacting or repressing them. Today, however l, I let my anxiety get the better of me at work. I felt exhausted, in and out, when I came out of the store, but I really felt bad that I relapsed and reacted to my emotions. After I watched your video, it’s always good to remind ourselves that self-improvement is a process, not a destination. I’m going to forgive myself and keep doing the best I can. :)

That serenity prayer carries so much wisdom and can be applied to so many different aspects of life. This is the first time I've heard a new take on it applying to other people and it's so true. One of my biggest takeaways from all of these lessons: the only person who I can control is me! So I might as well devote my energy to that instead of worrying about other people.

this set of videos has been very valuable to me--i certainly did not learn how to process emiotions as a young person, or even as a middle-aged adult--and as a highly sensitive person, my emotions can be very strong. the lessons and skills are what i now use daily to help with shortening my reactive times, as you put it. thanks, emma.

I have been watching these videos for the past couple of months. This in addition to coaching has helped me accept my emotions so much better. Before I would get so angry when I would show emotions this would be followed up with shame and more anger that I couldn't "control myself" and suppress my emotions in every situation. I never gave myself permission to feel emotions and sometimes the result would be a sudden outburst of crying alone on the floor for 30 minutes after work but not really thinking about why I was feeling. Since watching these videos I try to let my emotions come when they come, not suppress them but just feel them. I also do journaling sometimes where I write my fears to get a clear idea of all I am feeling. I am really happy for all these videos. Thank you for helping so many people learn this valuable life skill.

Thank you so much for your videos. I think that when you learn that you have a choice, you can get your power back. Anxiety can make us feel so weak and lost, but just trying to accept that I have a CHOICE makes me feel so much better, powerful, and peaceful.

Thank you so, so much for this course! It has helped me tremendously and helped me release some of my shame, tackle my enmeshment and codependency better and most important of all it helped me dare to go back to God and surrender to Him. And for the first time in my 41 year long life I trust that I am loved and that God's love carries me. And the freedom that comes with surrendering and asking Him for help has not only changed my behaviour but allso my physiology, from feeling constantly strangled and being tight and crushed over my chest barely being able to breath I can now breath again and the pain and suffocating feeling is gone - replacef with a sparkling, tingling, bubbly warm feeling in my chest and around my heart of knowing that I am a beloved daughter of God. Thank you for helping me turn home to God again! I still have a lot to work on, step by step... but now I realize God is with me on this journey and wants to help me, and that makes taking every step easier. I am grateful to you Emma from the bottom of my heart, you save souls! God bless you! Greetings from Sweden - you help worldwide!
