It doesn't matter how hard I try but I'll never find the words that will explain how remarkable and perfect I find this song to be. For context, Disintegration is my favourite album period. This track is a big part of that for pulling a big switcheroo on me. Before listening to the album and looking at the track listing, I thought tracks like this were gonna ruin the album being 9 minutes and 8 minutes long (title track). When actually getting to this song though, it turned out to be the moment I knew I was never turning back again to the life I knew prior to The Cure. Like you said, it simply doesn't feel like 9 minutes and to me when something feels a lot faster than its runtime, that's always a good sign.

Disintegration is an incredible album, period. This song always kind of reminded me of a mix of the title track from Faith, some of the darker songs on Kiss Me x 3, maybe Like Cockatoos or A Thousand Hours, and Carnage Visors. And the one-two punch of this song with the title track on Disintegration, followed by Homesick, gets me right in the feels every time. I don't know if this song is about Fuschia Groan from Gormenghast, but it has a similar vibe to songs like All Cats Are Gray and Drowning Man. Leaves very little doubt that Robert Smith is a genius.

Yes, those are my exact thoughts on not being able to find the words to describe it. I feel like I'm selling it short no matter what I say.

Thank you for reacting to one of the most beautiful songs on the greatest album ever made. By anyone. Period. Seriously, if you get the chance, I recommend lying in a candlelit room and immersing yourself in the exquisite melancholy of the entirety of this sublime masterpiece...

Disintegration, the track, regularly made me weep for years whenever I listened. It doesn't have the same effect on me now, but whew 🥲 This album is lovely.

One of the album covers he autographed for me when we'd met. Such a memory. He is a polite, warm, expressive yet shy & quiet soul; my perception from our exchange. I'm happy that I got to thank him. Robert's work is so varied which is lovely, but his consistency of an emotional delivery is stellar & gripping. Now I have the song Jupiter Crash in my head.... and now PUSH. Hopefully everyone hears those if they haven't already. x

My take on this song is that it starts out with "kiss me goodbye before I sleep", as if a loved one is leaving, and maybe after an argument or intense conversation, "swimming the same deep water as you is hard"... but then it ends with "the very last thing before I go, I will kiss you and we will be together again forever", as though to suggest that the loved one may leave and return, and regardless of whatever comes to pass, their love will withstand even death, when they both leave this mortal coil. You will listen to Disintegration and Picture of You, the other really long songs on the album. One of the b-sides from the Picture of You single, 2 Late, is also a brilliant song.

I learned this song. Same water as you. Is about a older guy dating a younger woman....And it's about someone trying to forget " his" or the last generation. Robert Smith was referring to the " hippie generation" 60's to 70' s era's.

yep... it's kinda a double entendre (the whole song), as well... If you go through the lyrics; It is also "describing" the two, in love, actually being at the edge of a lake and slowly wading into the deeper and deeper parts, until they're "under the water" and drown; as they just "can't take it any more" (self- deletion, if you will... 😟) ~ a few "key" lyrics ~ "wading out before I sleep" "bow your head and join with me", and face pushed deep" , REFLECTIONS meet" (the reflection of their faces in the water) .... "the strangest twist upon your lips" (caused by the ripples and reflection) "ripples clear" "it's lower now", and slower now" ... and the rest of it...

The sequence of Prayers of rain, The same deep water and Disintegration is the most memorable in the band's career, their most inspired moment. Also this song that begins with those thunders and that rain makes a lot of sense to hear it after hearing in the previous song Robert begging for rain. And all this state of sadness in the album ends up exploding in the next song that is Disintegration, which is about a break and this time Robert starts screaming instead of lamenting, where there are also the best lyrics that the singer has never written.

Personally I favour the theory that this song is about an aquatic double-suicide pact in which, instead of just drowning, the couple are literally frozen on the verge of a kiss. On the 1989 tour this was one of the songs in which Robert was likely to have one of his turns where he broke down in tears whilst trying to sing (e.g the penultimate night of the Wembley residency - which is the take used for Entreat Plus). Ftr: Last time I had a bout of real depression I referenced this song in a piece of rubbish literature which is probably still out there somewhere.

The metaphor of what happens to a human body when it's drowning ... applied to the protagonist's relationship with a dysfunctional woman. Is From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea the sequel to this.
