This is how the show could've gone. Write a story with all these characters in college that starts out with them living separate lives. Fred can start out as a spoiled jock, Daphne can be the campus queen bee, Shaggy can be a stoner with no direction in his life and have a mystery that Velma realizes and tries to solve that has threads to the other three characters that eventually ties them all together as a team and when they finally catch the bad guy, they find out he has a pet dog that he mistreats and so they adopt the dog and name him Scooby, Was that so hard?

I'll like you to cover Scooby Doo:Mystery Incorporated. It's a Scooby Doo show that tackles some dark themes and has my favourite iteration of the team. The serialized storytelling is really engaging. The animation is spectacular. The characters, from the main gang to side characters are all engaging and well written. I remember a story beat about Fred's parents being criminals like Daphne's own in Velma but it is done wayy better in Mystery Incorporated. This show is what an adult Scooby Doo show should be and I think you'll have a great time covering it

@@ivanbluecool I mean stuff like the generic lovers spats (Shaggy and Velma), quarreling between close friends (Shaggy and Scooby), the emotional rift of a breakup (Fred and Daphne), the angst of said breakup (Daphne, along with fan service like the inclusion of Hex Girls), the fact the parents are against their kids solving mysteries, the dad turning out to be the bad guy, a former hero turned villain due to greed and the generic cliffhanger. What I mean is that the entire show is a big rat's nest of cliches that any character could find themselves in. Even then, the bond seems to be quite loose, as the gang would often quarrel, and any fixes feel hollow or made solely for simple drama tropes. There may be a bond, but it feels hollow and predictable.

Norville is definitely a creep. He simped for Velma & tried to manipulate her into liking & kissing him several times, one of which happens while she is hallucinating & possibly about to die. Then he stalks her & tries to emulate the people she actually does like to gain her affection. Plus, he finally gets a girlfriend but still simps for Velma to the point he puts himself in danger to save her while ignoring his girlfriend who is in the exact same danger.

Another framing device for the writers that could have worked: go the Venture Bros route and make a proper deconstruction and examination of the tropes in things like Scooby-Doo or its clones in Josie and the Pussycats, Funky Phantom, Ghost Chasers, Clue Club, and Jabberjaw. The protagonist is always the protagonist, even if they are objectively bad people And the antagonist is always always the antagonist regardless of beng objectively good Because a protagonist is not someone who is good, that's a hero. The protagonist is the main person who the story follows. And the antagonist, or anti-protagonist, is not someone who is bad, that's a villain. The antagonist is the main person, force or anything that goes against the protagonist's goal. For example, in Death Note, Light Yagami is the protagonist since he is the main character and the main person from whose point of view we see everything. L is the antagonist for the first half since he morally opposes Light. Morally and ethically speaking, Light is in the wrong, even if his actions come from a good place, because murder is always objectively bad. L, even if he is just as pretencious and prideful as Light, is trying to stop a criminal without really commiting any harm to others.

If you really need a good idea of how bad this show is, just look at what I consider to be its’ lowest point… Episode 5. The episode where Velma dresses up like a man and suddenly all her problems disappear because she’s pretending to be someone with a Y chromosome. What makes it worse is that the writer Mindy Kaling is basically guilty of all the things that she claims men are guilty of because of “Privilege”. Getting handed an easy life because of their gender, being hired for a job they are not qualified for, getting an award and being paid for art that is absolute shit. Literally all things Mindy is guilty of, but she tries to claim that “Men are privileged and they get off easy”. I’m not gonna give ya too much shit, but I feel like you’re giving this show more credit than it deserves. It is a terrible show made by a terrible person. It deserves to mercilessly ripped into by an unapologetic KZbinr, not have a KZbinr to try and point out the handful of “good qualities” it has.

Return to Zombie Island is honestly worse than Velma. Like Velma is a bad show, but as you pointed out there is some good things it had to offer (if it was its own thing) AND its easier to disconnect from the Scooby-Doo franchise. R2ZI does NOT have that luxury, as despite it being one of many direct to DVDs Scooby-Doo movies it is a bigger insult to the franchise just for being a direct continuation to fan favorite film Zombie Island. From the unnecessary retconning to the original movie, to how tonally it does not match with said film TO utterly erasing the whole monsters are real premise that fans enjoy from the movie; that film to me is what truly killed Scooby-Doo for me . . . until that one crossover with Courage The Cowardly Dog come along.

@@JackA066 Was going to mentioned that as Velma in that film (and 13th Ghost) was pretty much the writers’ annoying walking retcon sue that basically explain away any fantastical elements that introduced in Scooby Doo lore (usually with the lazy excuse of swamp gas). Which is a shame that said characterization has to be give to Kare Miucchi. She’s a really good voice actress for the character

I gotta agree that Fred being brainwashed into being a feminist was funny but I'd chalk at least half of that up to Glenn Howerton being the perfect casting choice for this show's Fred. His delivery alone makes most of the Fred stuff work at least somewhat

17:13 The main thing I would disagree with is Mindy's voice acting for Velma. You said she "Delivers each line with realistic passion". To me, her voice acting for Velma was the worst out of all the characters on the show. Her voice acting sounds like she's commentating over the show instead of being a character in the show. When she screams, there is no fear or panic in her voice, it sounds like such a boring, monotone, yell. Maybe the main problem is, she's surrounded by a cast of good voice actors, but she's the main character. You hear the other good voice actors, but Velma's voice gets distracting because it doesn't match the tone the other voice actors are able to express.

I am not kidding when I say this. I lasted about thirty seconds into episode one. Got bored. Went to play with my dog. And then went on a JoJos Bizarre adventure binge as a sort of cleanse from Velma. That's how bad this series was for me. Side note. This series needs to be classified as a hate crime as well as racists, sexist and it promotes pedophilia. I hope someone comes out and sues the creators for these grounds. Oh and also it makes fun of mental health. As a person who has actually had several panic and anxiety attacks the way it's depicted in Velma made me angrier than I've ever been at a cartoon. Whoever wrote those scenes needs to get fired and then feel what a panic attack really feels like.

WB wouldn't let them use them because they are the faces of the Scooby Doo franchise which is supposed to be for all ages. They were even getting ready to launch the first pre school Scooby Doo show.
