I think one overlooked aspect of stone tools is reusing and repairing. There is no reason why...let's say a master Solutrean flintknapper would not reuse a Mousterian tool. It was still simpler than preparing a core and fabricating flakes and blades to make tools from...and they all had to be practical like that.

Completely overlooked is the fact that stone was the media to store information. Just like we like to remember where we came from, the things that we did-Ancient people were no different. How do you think we got the way we are? Before paper, before books or written language- there was Stone 🗿

@sanjivjhangiani3243

I believe that primitive people tend to trust in their ability to stalk and ambush their prey rather than in marksmanship. So, you might be able to take down a deer, for example, from a greater distance than these early hunters, but they would be able to get closer to the animal with their well-honed tracking skills.
@noobnaab4647
@noobnaab4647 Жыл бұрын
@@sanjivjhangiani3243 for sure my friend, they would be masters of the wind also.... You think that they could use some kind of bait? So many hunting goes around bait and feeders, you think its that old? Cheers! Many thanks on nice reply
@oakstrong1
@oakstrong1 Жыл бұрын
Whenever I see arrow heads from the same dig, it seems to me that they are roughly the same size and shape, made out of the same stone - so my guess is that the arrows are roughly the same weight, or at least close enough for an experienced hunter to estimate how to use one to their best advantage. Either you learn to be very good or you die off from hunger and don't pass on your genes, while the successful one will have many mates. Obviously it's not just about shooting but tracking and stalking, knowing the habits and movements of a herd, maybe down to an individual prey. We live in a modern world, we don't have as much time to devote on studying on wild animals.

Thanks for the excellent summary. It's always a hard choice, knowing what to include when you're summarizing from 3 million years down to 10 minutes; I felt that the use of arsenical bronzes between pure copper and the development of tin bronze deserved a mention in passing. Around the 8:56 mark when you're describing the transition from smelted copper to tin bronze, I'd love to have heard a half sentence slipped in, something about how people noticed that natural deposits of copper mixed with arsenic were stronger than pure copper, and learned to achieve an even better bronze by deliberately mixing tin in place of arsenic. That step of noticing that in impure mix was superior to pure copper, and then deliberately imitating it to make something even better felt worth a couple seconds of the 10 minutes, to me.

It was more likely disease that ‘quickly disappeared’ the other hominids. It would be impossible for a few hunter gatherers to wipe out entire populations with stone melee weapons. A plague on the other hand. It can travel huge distances and infect hominids 100s of miles away. Look at recent human history. Influenza killed more people than WW1. The Black Death killed half of Europe in 1340s. I reckon it was disease that wiped out other hominids.

Keep in mind most of the artifacts you will find from 0:00 to 2:08 is probably actually something that I have made. I haven't really been able to advance beyond this due to being born into a world where I am already out competed by a more advanced species, from which I got the computer I am using to post this comment. Although I do sometimes buy wire tape from them in order to attach my stone work to sticks. I also buy all my clothing from them because I am not yet advanced enough to make my own, and I also use an electric oven to make it into kelmed stone because I am not yet advanced enough to make fire.

Fantastic Series. Well-Informed and eloquently articulated. Is it at all possible to devote a long-form Episode to the Human development of ART. As an artist/professor/scholar, I appreciate the mentioning of the Blombos Site and acknowledgment of 100,000 year history of the notion of artmaking by hominid species. But I assert more a 300,000+++ history based upon the Bhimbetka "Cupules", and assorted "Venuses", e.g. Tan-Tan et al. That said, the subject of art is often given no more than a nod. It would be great to see you develop some serious erudition to it from the perspective of Human development.

Are we still "homo sapiens" after being mixed with multiple other species? Early homo would look a little different and perhaps even different anatomy?

It's a meaningless label and now we have homo homo sapiens to be as umbrella-like as possible so as not to offend anyone. We are happy to conjure up a new species of mollusc or butterfly based on imperceptible differences. Yet we resort to hysteria in rubbishing anything which contradicts the dogma that we are 'all the same' even when there is abundant evidence of glaring disparities in physique, IQ, behaviour and achievements. Easily separable into at least half a dozen species.
