I suffer from Bipolar Disorder as well, and it makes me so angry that he tries to hide behind it. No one in psychosis would say 'I have x y z you can't charge me', let alone dismember a person and use a concoction to speed up decomposition, and speed off when stopped by cops. Thats a sane person who knew what he was doing when he skipped medication, refused help & ordered cynanide. He's an adult and he doesn't want to help himself, but blame the world for his problems.

What's with him being able to order cyanide? He was crafty enough to have it sent to a PO. I might be wrong there, I thought Adrian mentioned a PO. Definitely a danger to others, and where I live in the US, a person can be put on a 72 hour hold for that. I don't know what the rules are for a longer hold, I think they evaluate the person's mental state before releasing them. Not completely sure why Ari wasn't at least, put on a hold like that. Surely his doctor had heard how bad he was doing. My speakers are bad and I may have missed something.

Bipolar disorder is the excuse of a diagnosis that psychiatrists invented for people with personality disorders for massive psychopaths. Psychopaths are not depressed they are just bored when they can't get what hey want .Sorry but most of the psychiatrists can't recognize personality disorders and won't let anybody to label as if you need a phd to spot a creepy toxic person. I was a pharmacist for 38 years. I had a patient that I called his psychiatrist to ask them to bring him in because he was spiraling down. I ended up calling the office 3 times, practically begging them to evaluate him. He was not seen, and ended up getting arrested for being violent and aggressive in several places in our village. If I could recognize this in a 10 minute interaction, imagine what a psychiatrist would determine in a visit. Our mental health system needs a major overhaul. And as far as I am concerned, HIPPA has been totally perverted to protect everyone except innocent victims.

The psychiatrist hiding behind HIPAA just makes my blood boil. One of the first things my therapist ever told me during our first session was that he was legally obligated to report what I had been saying to the necessary authorities if it ever became apparent that I was a threat to myself or others. I don't know if there's any legal stuff that could be pinned against her but I hope she's unable to sleep at night knowing that she might have been able to save Beverly's life and instead chose to do nothing.

If he was saying "I don't know right from wrong" and "I'm insane" then he was trying to establish a mental health defense. The most basic measure of sanity is if the person knows that what they've done is wrong. Ari knew this and that's why he made that statement.

As the daughter of a mother who was schizophrenic, people do not understand what that life is like for the family of someone with a mental health issue. You explained bipolar & the different variances of the disorder in a way that I rarely hear, because sometimes the media just simply states, "Oh they were bipolar". So people assume it's just some highs & lows get over it. I had a roommate who was bipolar & the maniac high state would last for weeks, with bizarre behavior. I would take my mother's schizophrenic diagnosis over dealing with a person with a severe bipolar disorder if that is even fathomable for some to understand. My mother went off to visit the fairies with her episodes, unlike my roommate who wrote all over his walls, made X-mas Wreaths out of fishing lures & tried to sell them on the street & constantly moving, talking, moving & talking for days & hours on end. He would have a certain glee in the havoc he was creating. So I clearly think that Ari knew what he was doing, but his mental health issue was a 100% contributing factor. Thank you for addressing mental health issues with a broader understanding of the different parameters of a certain mental health diagnosis.

The legal system has such a gross understanding of disordered behaviour. I have a personality disorder... yeah I know what I'm doing. I don't think you fully grasp the gravity of the glee your roommate exhibited. That's part of the whole picture, you know. I deeply resent the idea that because I am able to describe the world around me, this means that I have chosen to have a personality disorder. I've been in therapy for years, now I'm out of money for therapy, and guess what, the answers they teach you in therapy are "shut up and nut up", so you know, you tell me how the hell to cope with 60 more years of trying to pretend like I'm a regular ape like the rest of you.

I get what you are saying, but even then, I feel like you cannot just say "bipolar is worse than schizophrenia". That may be the case in the specific instances you knew, but that doesn't mean it is generalizable. All the same, there are people with bipolar disorder who are simply very excited and energetic and actually are perceived pleasantly by others whilst in a manic state (but the manic state is an issue to the person themselves, for instance due to the over-energetic state messing up their sleep, or making them reckless), as well as schizophrenic people whose hallucinations and delusions cause them to to be severely self-destructive and/or try to harm others. Heck, I recently had a lecturer at my university, she works at a forensic mental health institution, and was describing one of their patients who had been locked up there for over 20 years. A schizophrenic woman who had to be locked separately from even the other patients because she was constantly flickering into a delusional state where she thought she had to commit murders or otherwise the world would perish. They have tried all sorts of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy, to no avail. I just mean to illustrate, a mental health condition is classified under some label or another, but that does not mean every such individual has the same identical issues. Some may be harmless, whereas others are not. It is sad that people don't seem to grasp that. On one hand, there are truly harmless individuals who society are fearful of because of this. On the other hand, there may be these who are truly disturbed in a severely harmful manner, who are then judged as "whatever, they're just scum! they're just faking it to get away with crime!" and stuff like that.

I met a schizophrenic young woman while in the psych ward in 2004 (I had severe post-partum depression after giving birth to my triplets). She was generally quiet, didn't talk to the other patients, but did use a journal to write down all the things the "voices" told her. She did end up talking to me because for whatever reason the voices told her I was "safe". Having a background in psychology myself, I was curious having read about the various levels of schizophrenia. She slowly started telling me that she used to stand on street corners yelling at people and the voices were telling her really horrible things to do to others, including her family. She ended up in the psych ward after chasing her sister around with a knife. I wish I remembered the medication she was on, because she said it made the voices quiet down and she felt "normal". I think writing in the journal was her psychiatrist idea, but it could have been her own idea. She said when she wrote down what the voices told her, it made them quiet even more. That was my personal experience with someone with schizophrenia. I was only in the psych ward two weeks (til my antidepressant meds kicked in) but I sometimes wonder what ever happened with her. That said, you're right about schizophrenia presenting differently in those who have it.

I have known about Ari's case since around 2015 when I first found out. I actually went to middle school and high school with him. I shared a couple classes with him and would see him around school every now and then. I can attest that he was indeed very quiet, and reserved. I never saw him hanging out with anyone. I never saw or heard any of his outbursts, although that was a long time ago (and as the video suggested, he got worse over time). In our middle school art class, we were all doing a group project and the teacher went out of his way to give a solo project just to Ari, which I thought was weird but we went along with it anyway. In our high school health education in class, he admitted to the teacher that he prefers the company of adults over other students his age (and you guessed it, when it came to group project time he was always working alone instead). He always sat alone at lunch, was extremely quiet in class and didn't seem interested at all in making friends. I would try to say hi to him in class and he didn't ever seem to know how to react to me, since I doubt he was used to anyone his age interacting with him at all, much less in a positive manner (obviously he put up some major walls which made it difficult for anyone to get to know him). Another time I tried to give him a fist bump as we were passing each other in the hallway. He looked at me extremely confused and instead, grabbed my fist with his hand before walking off. It was extremely bizzare, almost like he was trying to figure out how to interact with an alien. I will also admit that I too was fairly shy in my youth. I have also experienced my fair share of bullying in school as well. But Ari was on a completely different level that I have never seen in anyone before. All of his classmates may as well have been aliens with how little he wanted anything to do with us. It's sad, because he came off as a very intelligent, albeit unusual individual. He was in AP classes and struck me as one of those extremely bright people who could become a rocket scientist or something along those lines. I never saw him getting bullied first hand, although I only saw him in passing every so often and shared a couple of classes with him, so I will admit there was a lot I didn't see either. But based on how he would act in the school, I can't say I was terribly surprised that it happened. If he didn't have his mental illness or whatever was seriously afflicting him, I'm sure he would have been a nice, social and successful person. It's sad to see that his mom died so gruesomely and that he wound up both experiencing and causing so much pain to everyone in his family.

The dad of one of my friends also went through something like this. He was suffering from PTSD after being the war in afghanistan, but he never wanted to accept any medicine for it. The only real thing that happened in the beginning was that he was deemed unfit to see his children , went to prison a few times and he got a divorce, but about 3 years ago he got tired of his parents constantly telling him that he needed medicine and help so he decided to murder both of them, but luckily he was caught like one or two days later because his parents had a dentist appointment at his ex wifes clinic. I still remember how this was all over the danish news and his brother spoke about how he had been a fantastic person before getting PTSD...

My grandma is going through this with my father. He has moderate paranoid schizophrenia and she blames herself for it, even though she had nothing to do with it. Grandma has dementia and is remembering less and less and my father is confusing her so much with his delusions. But no one can change her mind about my father and since she is essentially mentally incompetent she's vulnerable to suggestion. People think that schizophrenics are these loud, vocal people who are easy to spot but the truth is that when you see a schizophrenic like that they are experiencing an episode of delusions & hallucinations that is overwhelming them enough to let go of basic dignity. Many are fully aware and will follow their obsessions because it temporarily makes the mental pain & terror more bearable momentarily. I am scared that if I go to help my grandmother that he will find and harm me or take his rage out on my uncle's family. Hell, he hates my aunt for being transgendered and I wouldn't put it past him to kill another transperson as a sort of proxy for his sister. It sucks living this way but there are very few good mental health resolution centers that specialize in untangling complicated situations.

not true in the u.s. the baker act allows involuntary commitment in or out of a mental health facility for up to 120 hours. it can be initiated by anyone but it is usually those in the medical field that start them. under the marchman act family members can . request an involuntary hold for substance abusers for 60 days up to 90 days if it's deemed necessary. it's restraining orders against violent offenders that can't do much until that individual breaks the terms of the order. it's a stupid loophole that hasn't been fixed yet, you can't hold someone for a crime they haven't committed yet

@@Libellulaire that’s a bold assumption. My father has been a clinical psychologist for about 40 years, my uncle is now a retired professor of psychology, his son (my cousin) is a clinical psychologist, my step mother is a therapist, and many of our family friends are also psychologists. So I’d say I have plenty of knowledge about mental health. Anyway, the point is that this incident was a perfect storm of factors. Mentally unstable mother (this was pointed out in the video), absent father, mind altering meds, and a child who obviously took all of these things pretty hard. You’re acting like an innocent child is supposed to be ok with a broken home and a head full of meds just because the mom had a job and a new boyfriend. That’s ridiculous. It’s a miracle that many kids turn out ok, despite having parents who aren’t responsible enough to make a home for the children that nobody forced them to have. It’s all statistical, my friend. With a society that permits and encourages this (as evidenced by your insane appraisal of the situation), there will be children that will snap and kill people. Yes, the killer will be held accountable, but shame on people like you for excusing these horrible parents. Shame on you.

@@cougar2013 There are also cases where the parents aren't to blame for the horrible actions of a child. As much as you have psychology in your family, you seem to be missing the entire point of it. @@jeanettw2341 what point exactly did I miss? I already said the killer should be punished. The point I’m making is that no blame is put on the parents, and that’s a major problem. We have to start shaming deadbeat parents more and maybe less innocent children will suffer. I can’t imagine how any rational person would disagree with this.

But yet... I never became like this. I too was bullied and thought the world was unfair... but I never came close to doing anything terrible. All he had to do was accept the help from his mother who loved him dearly and was supportive, but he instead chose to play the blame game and be selfish. I have a brother and a sister with autism. While the vast, vast majority of people with autism are non-violent, I do feel we do a horrible job supporting their mental health as a society, we spent a lot of effort on trying to make them "act normal" so that we would feel comfortable around them and very little effort actually focused on their well-being...I also think social media has hit those with ASD especially hard, people with ASD have always had a reputation for being a bit obsessive and that I think in our day and age makes some of them vulnerable to rabbit holes of conspiracy theories and hate, especially when all the "help" they've gotten in life was about other people's comfort with them to make them less "weird" and more "presentable" and was not about helping them with their own emotions and needs...I think we're seeing an increasing number of them just snap. They desperately need mental healthcare that is actually centered on their emotional needs and that is able to help them navigate a changing world (one we're all struggling with, but the rest of us can talk to someone about it and feel our emotional needs are being heard out and met better). Not that this excuses individuals with ASD engaging in violence...if most can choose to not be violent, than those who are violent are responsible for their decisions. But just saying as a trend of seeing increasing cases of killers with ASD...I think part of it is more diagnosis but I think part of it is also an unaddressed mental health crisis of that we've taught people who are different to act like us but haven't given them anything but shame about how they actually feel, which leads to less effective coping.
@annegrey3780
@annegrey3780 Жыл бұрын
p.s. just being clear, I am *not* saying people with ASD are violent, or that lack of proper care justifies killing. I am just saying that, at the societal level, a lot of mental health clinicians are still trained on neurotypical patients and don't know how to treat neurodivergent clients, and (while it has improved) a lot of healthcare and early childhood intervention is still very focused on making people "normal" (making people act and look like neurotypical people) and still is not actually really focused on making sure people who are outside of normal still have the skills and supports they need...which can actually make it worse, as instead of help people who are divergent get shame for being different. Add to that how easy the internet makes it for people to rabbit hole into some horrible ideologies, and that people with ASD may be more prone to obsessive interests and may have even more difficulty shutting it off than the rest of us, and I think we're failing to create a world where people with ASD are supported to mentally thrive...while for most of them that means they'll suffer in silence (as we all do when not supported), for some they may choose violence (as a fraction of all people do when not supported) and while that choice for violence is never justified, I think on the social level there are things we can do to respond with more support (including more clinicians trained on actually supporting people with ASD and better consideration of how social media- while great in many ways, can be toxic and what different populations need to enjoy social media safely.).

So tragic. How did a man with such serious mental health issues have access to cyanide and so many guns? Especially after the previous b0mb threat and other crimes. There should be a way to permanently institutionalize those that are an obvious danger to others. As soon as the mother called his therapist & said he was off his meds & out of control the therapist should have had him sectioned. He is a large man as shown by the arrest so there was no way for his mother to control him or force him to take his meds.

@ginnywilliams1114

At 18, yes, she couldn’t talk to the doctor! But, Ari was diagnosed at 5 and had other diagnoses afterward. I’m sure she talked to the doctor before he was 18…..What real mother wouldn’t? I became a momma cougar if anyone threatened my son, that extended to playground bullies! Everything started coming together by the time and by the time he was in high school, he was a really good man! He matured earlier than most boys, but he had a few scars from an abusive step-mom! My ex was a dispatcher and his girlfriend, who became the step-mom ALSO worked at the same job. He trained her! In the second grade, Duncan, my eight-year old son, came to school crying. Needless to say, I rushed over there. Duncan had the impression of a wooden coat hanger across his back and he said his “step-mom did it”. His dad was at work training someone else. When I got home, I called my ex on the non-emergency number and began to tell him, if she EVER laid a hand on him again, I would tear her neck off and shit down her throat! He said, “You know this line is recorded!” To which I said, “1. I don’t care, and 2. You can take it to the bank!” He divorced her after about two years later. I’d taken Duncan to the water park in Silver Dollar City in Branson, MO for the 4th of July festivities. The hotel we stayed at had an indoor pool the we could use when we wanted to so…. we stayed wet for three days! We both had a blast! When we got home, my ex called me. He told me he was divorcing the step-monster. I asked if he was tired of the fighting and he said Yeah somethin’ like that. But I knew she was battling barbiturates and was waiting to see if she kicked ‘em. She didn’t. After my divorce from my husband, when Duncan was six, we went to many places and had a lot of adventures! I think that’s why he’s so well-rounded. I got to have my second childhood with him. My first was pretty crappy, but both of us, me and Duncan have survived. I am retired and on social security. He has lived in an apartment on the back of my house and helps me with my bills! What a blessing! Oh by the way, he’s had the same girlfriend since he was 17! He’s 34 now and a plumber! I beam with pride because of him!❤️ Sorry for the diatribe, but this really touched a chord with me.🤗❤️🤗😮

@@ginnywilliams1114 ….I have ASD. So does one of my brothers. I take a class called social skills in school and am in remedial math but tested way high in history and English. My parents are strict but not coat hanger strict and I live in Texas. My parents just told the school if we give them problems, call home first. My mom has an educational doctorate so they don’t mess with us but one teacher messed with “the poor kid” one day. My grandfather was still with the sheriffs department (he’s retired now a couple years ago) and we told him about it. You could hear the slaps through 2 closed doors and Marvin was crying so bad when he went back in his class. The teacher left bruises. The family didn’t want to press charges but a report was made to the school, the district, the superintendent, the state. The teacher was fired and his license pulled. Since then, you don’t have to have permission of the family (they had a daughter in the school and didn’t want the kids harassed further) though they try to get it. A coat hanger?! I would have pressed charges.

Thank you Adrian, for your nuanced way of speaking about cases involving mental health issues. Most people would only call the perpetrators monsters and wouldn't look any further. I m happy you spoke about him living within his own diabolical prison as well....Noone can look in someone else's head. So noone should judge. This boy must have lived in absolute hell.....Which doesn't mean I think he s innocent. But we should always try to place ourselves in every party involved....so thank you for this. I appreciate that a lot.

That mum struggled so hard to help her son but it seems like she was ready to move on from him. She tried desperately to get him help and I’m sure she was in the midst of making sure he had all the help and support he needs so she could make the break. I can fully appreciate why she wanted this separation to happen so both of them could be stable and get that break away from each other. The fact that the phyc, didn’t give her answers to her desperate attempts to help her son, ment that she was going to have to endure and suffer. I fully understand that her son was bitter about his mum passing on mental illness. I also know for experience how scarey it can be to be around a loved one with his conditions. I just feel sorry for them. It’s hard being a carer but it’s also equally hard to help some one who is in that mental state. I’m wondering what more the mum could have done? The answer is nothing. She did what she could. This is why I’m upset about the phyc not saying something or doing something. I also have first hand experience with autism and how her son was obsessive and follows through. The mum cared so much. I’ve had experience with someone with this condition doesn’t take meds. They fully believe there is nothing wrong with them. Some how religion is a theme with this illness. I’m surprised he was not seen as insane. That makes zero sense to me but we have to remember that in court, it’s all about who has the stronger defence which is stupid. As horrific and tragic as this is and the fact that he did what he did to his mum, we still can’t allow anyone to get off lightly. Rest in peace to Beverly. It’s all just a terrible nightmare that was preventable. But was it? No it wasn’t. Such a sad 😢 case

Silencers really shouldn’t be lumped in with everything else. Some places (that have any actually knowledgeable people in charge) *REQUIRE* people to use silencers for both their own hearing protection and for noise levels bothering other people. Many guns are ridiculously loud. Silencers help reduce that. They don’t make them anything near “silent” or go pew pew. And stuff like this just keeps reinforcing the narrative that they make guns more dangerous rather than just less of a nuisance. It would be like saying seatbelts make cars more dangerous cause people will drive more recklessly if they feel safer.

I think it's important that we establish a system in which therapists can get a patient to stay at mental hospital for a while if they feel their patient is a danger to others. Prefabs if Ari spend a few months in a mental facility on the right meds and with constant therapy sessions to resolve his aggressive behavior towards his mother and sister, then maybe they could've figured something out. The fact that his mother lived so long with this dangerous behavior shows that she loved him and was willing to stay by his side no matter the issues, the reason she wanted to abandon him in the end is because she feared for her own life and that of her daughter.

When it comes to mental illness in people who are or have been deemed to be a potential threat to themselves or others, I believe that a trusted friend or family member should be appointed to be a "medical confidant" for being able to gain access to the patient's mental health records and be able to provide information to their mental health professionals. Too many times, we have seen where loved ones were unable to know what was going on with a mentally ill loved one, and it turned out tragic. I know that psychiatric physicians are supposed to report a patient who threatens violence but they also need to have someone else who has the patient's best interest at heart to be aware of what is going on with them too!
