I would love to see Alexa do a focus on sustainable fashion, taking a look at less polluting methods, plus vegan lines. For example, there are really exciting vegan alternatives to leather, such as Piñatex.

Idk for me as a middle class person it’s feels as though these places, like opening ceremony are so out of reach- my friends and I would just never feel comfortable to walk into a place like that, so it feels slightly ironic how they talk about it being a meeting place for everybody, instead it’s a meeting place for those can afford to be respected in such a space.
@Mssilverbelle

Keep in mind, there is ALOT of money in NYC and LA.. BUT you can Use them as inspiration. think about it.. humans still want "a meeting place" , items that make you smile, ( i want the dog coin purse) , and good design.

@@Mssilverbelle TRUTH. We tend to forget the base rates when it comes to wealth. There is A LOT - I mean A LOT of money in the world. From NYC, LA, Korea, and Japan, there are more millionaires than one would imagine. Walking into one of these luxury stores and spending $800 on sunglasses isn't even a fraction of some peoples' wealth.

Sahara Topaz which is why I refuse to ever in my life finance a car - what a SCAM. I’ll buy used all day. And as for a mortgage, I’m still debating that one... take out a 100k loan for 15 or 30 years - something doesn’t sit well with me with that. Wouldn’t it be better to pay cash? Then again, leveraging is a tool.

This series is by far one of the most influential/ meaningful I have ever seen. I'm constantly faced with the problem of whether I should actually pursue my dream of content creating, art directing, and fashion documenting (I know too much to actually be true) or follow what my parents want which is an "actual" career such as law, etc. I constantly have this anxiety of whether or not I should follow my dream and what happens if I'll never make it, and whether or not I have the ability to actually succeed in what I want to do. As a young boy living in a place where there's not much interest in fashion and it's quite boring, I feel that coming from my background (economically as well) would never grant me a position to do what I've always dreamt of. On top of that, my parents are repeatedly telling me the correct path is the "actual career" path so I'm left thinking "Are they right... Will i only succeed in doing something I don't love". This video clarified most of my concerns, and for that I'm very thankful xx.

It’s always good to pursue your dreams, even if you end up someplace else. It’s about the journey. If you get something out of studying Law maybe do it, and explore your creative calling in your spare time. Many skills you learn in a degree are transferable. One of the things I learned is how to research. I’m sure you will get stuff out of studying Law that will give you extra insight.

It's just so tough, though! These documentaries are amazing, and it's super fascinating to look at all these different sides of the fashion industry that we don't think about. At the same time, it's so hard to fully get away from the idea that the fashion industry is about superficiality and excess. Like a lot of other people have said here, it's a pretty small demographic who can go into shops like these and think "Wow, $300, so worth the price!" I live in New York, and it's pretty easy to guess that New York is not ONLY made up of people working in billion dollar industries, people who can't spend a month's rent on one handbag. And that's where the arguments aren't quite there yet. Saying that the fashion industry is actually amazing, filled with wonderful and friendly creative people trying to make a difference. Yes, but...

your instincts are right... Fashion is not a "healthy" industry in its proposition and in its essence: it basically sells inverted values, goes against the grain of life (youth better than aging, ryou have to be rich, beautiful etc... letting alone the fact that the outside matters more than the inside). It plays on your fears of not fitting in, and not being 'enough', and brings mimetic desire to its paroxysm, it inflates the ego... It is basically nefarious no matter how much you dress it up in appealing layers and filters of silk and discourse and glamour... That being said, it is ALSO a platform for creative people, full of talent and spiritual power and visions to find an outlet to their talents, and make a living out of it... It is an imperfect outlet, but still it has it own merits too, not JUST negatives... for instance, it's interesting to see the form that sociology, history, politics, pop culture can take in the minds of different creators, since clothes and garments are like captures of the spirits of a given epoch/era... that creative side of fashion is interesting. This embodiment of the spirit of a given time/era... and the different anthropological dimensions/propositions that stem from a same period/cultural context... it creates spaces of personal development... and has big societal impact in many ways...

I love how you've unpacked a complex and misunderstood industry. As a marketing exec it was really helpful to see how other leaders have stumbled onto their path. Please do a show about how trends start on the runway from the top $$$$$$ designers and then how those trends trickle down to the masses. It's changing now, with the bloggers and street style instagram.. isn't it? Fashion need to change like other "disruptive" industries. Anyway thanks for being fun and down to earth, too.

All of those people were wealthy already that's how they 'made it' in the fashion industry, instead of asking asinine questions about how useful was her phylosophy degree just ask her how much money did it cost her to set up her business, then it will be painfully obvious that not anyone has the kind of money to start a business like in New York.

Humming bee, who said it was or wasnt harsh? Lol you’re confusing the comment above mine. At least focus on who you’re replying to. Anyways my comment was based on the text that states “not anyone has the kind of money to start a business like in New York”. Which from my actual experience in the world i’ve noticed to be a constant excuse from poor people to sometimes put the blame on something they cant control instead of what they can actually control. Which is public information, ambition and their effort. The poor who make comments such as the one im replying to are the ones I blame for their lack of intelligence and ambition for success, not the poor in general because it’s impossible to generalize the reason for every person’s poverty of course.
@hummingbee8101
@hummingbee8101 4 жыл бұрын
Ignupa you know these people are poor? Some are probably educated from top universities, coming from middle class families and yet have average jobs because making it far in your 20s isn't that easy and it is true coming from wealth helps to set up business. You can't expect a recent graduate to have sufficient finances to set up chic boutiques and offices like the ones you see here without a starting fund, do you? Certainly not with a silly philosophy degree.

I really love this and as someone taking time out from university, trying to gain industry experience within fashion and also just trying to understand what I would want to gain out from it has really inspired me to keep going because i knew there were a lot of roles but didn't know that some roles were as accessible than others. I've been trying to find a channel that focuses on fashion and always wanted to gain an insight into the world before actually embarking into it. Social Media is huge but no one really knows the behind the scenes stuff. It's really shocking how much abundance there is within this field.

I need to get my head inthe game. 46, and I'm still rocking the "old school" resume. I always wanted to be a little more extra, but thought it was a death sentence prior to the interview. I recall watching Legally Blonde, and wishing I could do scented paper, then went status quo. That Froot Loops resume box gave me LIFE!!! This documentary has inspired me to unleash my inner creativity, desire to collaborate & network. I've always had the inner desire to be a disruptor, unfortunately I opted to conform, but no more!!! Thank you.

After watching this pretty impressive piece of journalistic brilliance, I have to ask myself why it took me so long to click on this film that kept scrolling by me in the side bar. Alexa Chung is a real dynamo at connecting and asking the best questions that get right to the crux of what one should know about being successful in this business of fashion. Wow... This really got my mind all fired up on so many levels. I will definitely watch this again and already have a list of people who I know will find this not only useful but very engaging and delightful. Great stuff, here... Not to be missed!
