Correspondent Tracy Smith sits down with The Go-Go's, arguably the most successful all-female band in rock 'n' roll history. Four of the five members - Charlotte Caffey, Belinda Carlisle, Kathy Valentine and Jane Wiedlin - talk about their hit songs like "Vacation," "We Got the Beat" and "Our Lips Are Sealed"; their rollercoaster relationships with each other; and the new Broadway musical, "Head Over Heels," which features 17 of the group's songs.

Kathy and Gina were the only two pure musicians in the band. The other three girls learned as they went they couldn't read music or play instruments but they learned quickly. They partied hard but they were all business when it counted. If they wouldn't have replaced Kathy in 2013 I think they would have been in the Hall by now. Since they have made up with Kathy who was stand up the whole time it was too little too late IMHO .

The one semi-successful band of all women was "Fanny". They were rock and rollers from the early 70's. 2 sisters, June and Jean Millington on guitar and bass. June was an excellent guitarist who also played a great slide guitar. Jean was bass and could sing and scream beautifully. Alice DeBuhr was the drummer and Nicky Barclay on keyboards. They all wrote. I LOVE the Go-Gos! "Our Lips Are Sealed" is a personal favorite and THEY SHOULD BE IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME!!!

A couple of years ago at my church’s Armenian festival I saw a young Armenian-American woman that was was a spitting image of Jane Wiedlin from The Go-Go’s early days when their first album came out! She was dressed like her from the early 80’s and had the same short curly hair only she had tattoos on her arms and was buying Baklava and other mid eastern pastries! lol The resemblance was uncanny and just shows you that the 80’s are overwhelmingly back here in the 2010’s!

So in the 1980s, two all female bands that played their instruments, wrote their songs, and sang: The Go Go's and The Bangles. Weird fact - one member of the Go Go's has written and performed with The Bangles - do you know who? Answer: Charlote Caffee - who co-wrote with the Bangles "Something That You Said." I do find it fascinating although both of these bands were all-female in the 1980s, we have not had another successful one after these two since then. Where did the all-female bands go?

1. Shame on the interviewer for not discussing the Go-Go's brilliant fusion of punk with surfer rock. Like NOBODY acknowledges this. 2. Gina Schock is brilliant. Gina and Kathy together are like Bonham and Jones. 3. Belinda's world-class lead vocals with Jane's "angel voice", what a combo. 4. Steppenwolf said it best: "In a rock band there will be fights and war... It's a ROCK BAND... it's not therapy!". 5. This band is so solid that interviewers should be publicly humiliated when they focus on gender. This band is far more talented than any of the other punk bands of the day (Bay City Rollers, even The Ramones), do surfer rock better than the Beach Boys, have a rock solid bass/drums/keyboard better than any other band ever, and two capable lead vocalists. .... but they get asked questions about cat fights and how hard it is to be a girl. Watch Jane fail. Fail, Jane, fail. upvoted for the GoGo-s, not for the interviewer.

The reason people still pay attention to the Go-Go's isn't because they broke down barriers, but because ultimately they didn't. I don't think there's been an all-female band this century that's even had a top ten record, much less a #1. When today's youngsters see them on TV, it is literally something they have never seen before.
