Johnny Carson once asked Sean Connery when he had become an actor and no longer just James Bond. Connery answered, “I think it was with “The Hill”. Ever since I’ve seen it, it has been in my Top Ten films! It’s not easy to be in my top ten, rated by how much they changed my life.

This movie is testimony to the insanity and cruelty that exists in the minds of some military authorities. I saw recruits beaten, kicked, and choked till they passed out. Some recruits required medical treatment and hospitalization. Eventually, after enough havoc had been raised, these drill instructors were dealt with. 50 years ago. There was no way any of that was legal under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. In an American frontier army, like McCulloch's Texas Rangers, the men would never have submitted to such treatment. American frontier soldiers were assertive and independent minded men. They couldn't be bullied. They would have fought back. I understand this treatment is no longer allowed in American military forces.

It's in the middle of the bloodiest war in history. Soldiers and civilians alike are getting killed and maimed all over the world by the thousands, tens of thousands and even more. But if you refuse to do your part in this war, if you break any rules or show bad discipline otherwise... We will not kill you. We will not put you into a penal suicide battallion like other armies did. No, we will send you to the hottest place in hell on earth and there we will teach you some manners. And when we are done with you, you'll wish you were dead or you will be fully reformed and be allowed to rejoin your comrades in the battle line. Who knows, you might be back in time for Monte Casino, Kasserine Pass or Operation Market Garden!

A great pro-libertarian drama.
@DM-kv9kj2 жыл бұрын
It wasn't "pro-Libertarian". Libertarian is a particular political ideology with all kinds of specifics, historical contexts and nonsense involved. All this film was was general anti-establishment along with a touch of social liberalism, focusing mainly on archaic regulations and ways of thinking in the military and other forms of authoritative systems. Ironically, Libertarian politics has become quite archaic and even corrupted, especially in the US where it's mostly followed.
@dhalsim-12 жыл бұрын
@@DM-kv9kj I think libertarians today are nothing but easily led woke nut jobs. They don't even realize (through reverse psychology) that they now do the bidding of the political classes and big business If anything they're pro-establishment.
@ricardocantoral76722 жыл бұрын
@@DM-kv9kj Wrong, Wrong, Wrong. Libertarianism, true libertarianism, focuses on the freedom of individual. The Hill is pressure cooker constructed by the tyranny of the state backed by an out of date ideology which a reduces people to mere clockwork goons who reject anyone that exhibits any sort of difference from the norm.
