Lots of you guys seem to forget everything I said in my caveats and showed in the clips before the “then vs now” segment. Armor was far more effective, ammo wasn’t as good, there was virtually no blunt damage, no face hitbox, and movement from sprint to standstill was very different. Combine all of that with no med animations and instant mag reloads and it was both fast-paced AND longer fights. You’re free to disagree that this was a golden age, it’s a subjective opinion, but luckily for me it’s my video so I get to share mine :)

The gunplay/gameplay loop feels at its best when everyone is running class 3/4 armor with 5.45 BT rounds or an equivalent, 5/6 and super rounds like M995/7.62BP should be more of a rarity.

Yeah fr, when I played Tarkov over the summer I almost exclusively ran AK-74 w/ 5.45 BT and class 4 armor and the gunfights I would have were always really great, comparable to the 2018 clips in this video.

Totally. Longer TTK allows fights to have something of a mini storyline. It's one of the things that makes a game like Hunt Showdown so enjoyable and is 100% why everyone universally enjoys the early wipe the most. The low recoil, high RPM AP ammo thing we have now really lacks depth for me. It's cool that so much has been refined, but the end result is a bit overtuned. I'd say, whether I'm getting merked (most of the time) or killing someone else, something like 80% of engagements are over in the first half second.
@TheLastGreatDon
@TheLastGreatDon 2 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more and it fits better with the theme of "forsaken military contractor" simulator. AP rounds should be somewhere in the realm of 40,000 roubles per shell. Make them almost impossible to run and be beneficial to the 950rpm meta, longer more drawn out fights are more tactical and present opportunities for actual cover fire and suppression mechanics rather than prefire .002 second ttk.

The "Then and Now" comparison portion really hits home. I was only a Tarkov viewer at that point and man did I enjoy watching the longer fights. The fights usually had so much tension and payoff. Now it feels more like sprinting, leaping around and 1 tapping. Just not something I like watching anymore.

Fuck watching, I don't like playing it anymore, either. The last few wipes i did play, were fun for like 2 or 3 days, until the sweatlords hit their levels and started Terminatoring through the maps. My theory is that you played this game for many years, gained a lot of experience and now you "play the game with your eyes closed" , so there's no more adrenaline and no "emotion" like in the first days. All points, pixels, maps, builds and etc, are memorized. A person who started playing tarkov a short time ago will play more slowly, and will have adrenaline pumping in their veins during the Raid. BTW nice video!

I just joined Tarkov about a week ago with me watching a lot beforehand on KZbin and learning simply by watching people. But man I suck so muxhnqt this game especially with crap ammo, loadouts and being a hatchling late-wipe against chads. Seeing the then vs now comparison really hit me hard. The fights seemed to be way better back then, especially since it’s so discouraging not being able to learn anything since I die by 1-taps most of the time and don’t get to learn how to approach, handle and end a fight properly. The only big disadvantage I see is getting 3rd partied like in apex legends due to long engagements, but it would be well worth it to me being able to learn anything in my first 50-100 hours in therms of pvp. I know scav‘s are a possible alternative, but this won’t level me up to get up to standard with any of the other players. But I still freaking love this game, any new game with being disoriented and having this kind of nervousness and fear of what‘s even going on.

I think we can all agree old tarkov was awesome despite it's flaws but I also have a deep appreciation for how far the game has come and will continue to go. Sometimes I feel like people don't miss "old" tarkov but rather miss going into the game blind and learning everything along the way. One more thing I may add is that back then people were horrendous at PVP and just the game in general but nowadays there are a ton of absolute slayers who have years of experience in the game which for new players and even returning players can make the game seem damn near impossible starting out and tends to push people away from the game. Regardless, this was an awesome video Veritas, Keep it up!

back in "the day" as it were, everyone was a massive bullet sponge and we all complained about it. One taps were kind of rare and we got kinda upset when we would put half a mag into a guy and he was able to turn around and shoot you back. Well we got what we asked for, but it turns out we didn't know what we had to begin with.

That’s what I thought. I think that the movement was better, but the TTK took too long. I didn’t play it back then, I bought the game in the end of 2020 and my biggest complaint is the movement speed, it’s too fast. The fast ttk is something I’m used to, because I’ve played a lot of Insurgency legacy, that TTK was insane low. Just 1 shot with ap ammo and you were dead 💀.
@The1337guy1
@The1337guy1 2 жыл бұрын
I can't speak from experience but the idea that a helmet like the Kiver could eat M995 is baffling to me. Watching that made me realize that people are just upset that the games TTK has decreased but don't understand why that's the case. You can still have long fights in the game right now, but because a Kolpak can no longer suck up rifle rounds like it was being hit by BB's things have changed. Armor being less effective was always going to be the case and once (assuming they actually follow through on this mechanic) body armor has plate hitboxes alongside the soft armor/fabric points the TTK will be changed yet again. The issue as it stands is availability of the best items. Once you hit level 20 there is no item you aren't able to buy including the best ammo and armor. This has shifted the perception that the game was "better" back then because now I can buy 100 rounds of SNB at any time I want and clap people wearing any armor. You wanna fix this ability it's gonna take a lot of changes but it starts with limiting what can be bought on the flea market.
@IMunchOnCats
@IMunchOnCats 2 жыл бұрын
@@The1337guy1 You are absolutely correct, it is however my opinion that these current 'issues' are a direct result of the complaints that TTK was perceived as being much too low. In terms of realism the game is probably pretty accurate as it currently is (I've never been shot so I'm going of of anecdotal youtube evidence (ie guntuber armor tests)) but liberties are usually made for the sake of gameplay. The increased rarity of top-tier items will hopefully be a good solution.
@The1337guy1
@The1337guy1 2 жыл бұрын
@@IMunchOnCats I don't disagree and I think the best ammo, attachments, and armor should not be as common as they currently are. The weight system was a good step in the right direction, but now we have to address everything else.

I wish BSG would consider bringing back the "old gunplay." Guns raising slower after spring, slower to ADS, and more bobbing and swaying. It looked more realistic and was smoother, which really contributed to the craziness of a firefight. I hope inertia can end the strafing, sprinting bullshit that plagues this game now

Running and strafing can be done in reality. The game is supposed to be realistic. The player base is changing and the only real problem with this game is the cheating. I wish I could play Labs, but 50% of the Lobbies have a cheater in them. The shit is ridiculous.

I think it was patch 12 when they added reserve that was my favorite wipe. It was super easy to make money and because of that pvp was just fun. You could go into labs and easily sell all the player loot and make a quick 500k-1mil every raid. But 12.12 is in my opinion my second favorite wipe just because of inertia. The PVP with inertia has been so fun. I did love no inertia with the unique pvp but because tarkov is already so unique inertia has just added more to pvp which in my opinion is a needed change. PVP got stale after 4 wipes of the same movement system. I did love it but I was still excited for inertia.

This is going to sound dumb, but old Tarkov "scared me". Not my consciousness, not me myself, but it amped my body up something crazy. In game, if I were alone and being shot at from somewhere I couldn't see where I was being attacked from, I'd be adrenaline dumped. Fingers cold, trying to think while underfire, zigzaging, hopping, ducking, etc. If I made it away, I noticed I may have sweat a bit, bit of a heart rate elevation. Probably because it was first person, my brain maybe thought it was real danger, I dunno. Or when someone who's been kicking my ass from one side of the map to the other. I'm barely alive, but I just ambushed my tormentor and killed them. Those kinds of good feelings aren't something easy to find in games now a days, at least for me. If I got snuffed out, I'd be angry for a minute then just think something along the lines of "that's tarkov!", similar to the older "that's X-com!". Towards my end of playing I just disliked most of what they were adding. I despise the goddamned flea-market. How a lot of people started playing the game with spreadsheets and multiple alarms set to they knew when vendors restocked so they could hop in and get the rare stuff then log back off. Maybe you could craft it, but the higher level crafting stuff was locked behind so much grind and material that was already better than you could make yourself! After the flea-market and the opening of the Chinese servers where all of a sudden I was being looted while still alive by invisible people, I just said "f it" and was done. By then most people were just extract camping anyways. BSG banged on and on about how other PMCs being disappointed if people did hatchling runs, implemented the run through system to counter stat boosting, constant emphasis on long ranged combat with 1 shot, 1 kills becoming the norm as more ammo types were introduced, it felt like they really only cared about how the big streamers, the people who got them exposure felt about the game than the people who'd already bought the dang thing. Then when people started complaining that exfil camping was similar to the hated stat boosting/hatchling runs because the maps were empty and silent with any previous option, the only response was "git gud scrub". That attitude combined with the childish DMCA strikes they've done multiple times in the past when people simply pointed out a bug, exploit, or vulnerable netcode, I didn't want to be part of the community they were building anymore. Actually playing the game, looting, fighting scavs, and moving across the map carefully to avoid drawing unwanted attention to be killed by a shot you never heard by someone with the game open on one monitor, graphics and sound set in ways to easily pick out approaching people, and switching between the game they were actually playing to then exfil camp someone, and now using that body as bait while they continued to play other games, that makes the world feel empty, cold, and lifeless as well, just like if someone had done a run-through, or a hatchling run, both they put up counters for. And just ceding labs to hackers and exploiters is just unacceptable. Being killed by people running through the sky in Reserves or Woods or Shoreline, it all became an unhappy mess. The only hope I hold out for was the mention of being able to host private servers in the future and able to pvp and raid with friends. It did swing back around to being funny at one point when you lived longer with crappier armor because everyone was running the absolute best ammo possible with maximum pen. I still feel that the flea-market and the huge incentivizing of real money trading beyond character boosting that was already going on was when the game really started to turn for the worst. I was genuinely sad when I uninstalled after not having fun for a long time. All it takes though, is to remember how childish Nikita behaved and how he abused DMCA, swearing at players, etc., to remember that he is not the type of person I want to continue to support. Edit: Btw, what ever happened to the PMC karma system where if you indiscriminately murder PMCs from your own faction, traders would get pissed off at you? Meaning actually having to not shoot on sight but possibly work together?

Im excited for the next episode, covering 2019! The release of labs and first time ever that people saw and fought raiders. To see them petrified and frozen still in a corner as nades go off across the map. The comparison of flea market being added into the game in 2020. How players would yell when they saw a pmc they killed had a juice cannon and lvl 5+. As now its almost emotionless and only calulating roubles to then buy their meta kits instantly, which then get head eyes and 2-3 tapped in the chest anyways lol.

This is the Tarkov I yearn for, slower pace, everyone was pretty much on the same playing field with weapons and armor, movement felt slower, engaging someone felt terrifying, nobody was running from one corner to the other with strafing, people took their time. I'm happy I experienced this golden age and hope for it to slowly turn back to this once inertia gets added.

A major problem with Tarkov combat is that full-auto is simply way too controllable. There's a reason why soldiers don't use guns on full-auto for things other than suppression, 99% of the time.

15:42 is the best example of current tarkov. Extremely high rates of fire with no recoil. Insurgence Sandstorm feels like it’s got some of the best gunplay, while Squad feels the best to me as a whole. People just don’t want to think. They want to let their adrenaline and stress guide the fight and win based on it. In Sandstorm, you have the time to think, along with good guns and highly mobile players. In Squad, if you aren’t thinking then you’re probably meat grinding between objectives hoping for something to change. In Tarkov, as soon as you start thinking and trying to play smart in your engagement, maybe switch to single fire so your recoil doesn’t knock you away, someone who hasn’t taken their finger off of their W key since the start of the raid flips the corner and sprays you down full auto while also not stopping their movement once. Tarkov has been tailored to the landmarks, and now they are the ones who dominate it, and nobody wants to play anymore.
@jamesblack5425

Too true! I've been saying these exact words for years now always to fall upon deaf ears. If Tarkov wants to be taken seriously then they need to do away with the strategy (or lack thereof) of "Ill just hold shift+W+Mouse1 = win." As far as I see it this game has allowed itself to become no different than every other battle royale game literally ever, where sprinting and holding down full auto = win, it's truly pathetic. It's such a braindead strategy that BSG might as well have just made a children's game at that point.

The biggest problem in fights these days is the bullet dmg. If they fix that, you now have the proper mechanics with healing, proper mechanics with throwing grenades, proper mechanics with weapon sway. They shouldn't combat the bullet dmg by adding Slicks etc but lower the output dmg. I was around when you could run full sprint with FORT armor so I also like the new weight changes which makes the game feel more realistic. With that being said... you're right.. the fights were more intense and lasted longer. Again, the bullet dmg was much lower and rate of fire weren't lasers...

There are a lot of things in this video that feel painfully cherry picked and poorly thought out. Let's go through some of the points I feel were not made well. First lets talk about ammo effectiveness, armor, and general player skill. The idea that everything was less effective and therefore more skill based is definitely an interesting idea. Seeing as you could say, rock your 6B43 and basically become bulletproof even against armor piercing full power rifle rounds. Now aside from this making sniper rifles a complete joke to use seeing as even the best ammo at the time for the job was barely able to scuff mid tier armor, this takes away a lot of agency from the shooter. You aren't rewarded for making a clean shot from 100 meters because the armor invalidated your effort. This can still happen but with armor and ammo values today a bolt action rifle is still incredibly powerful against even high tier armor. The idea that AP ammo was stopped by a Kiver is frankly hilarious to me and saying that there was more skill when gear was such a huge determining factor in fights is just wrong. Again, compared to now gear matters less in a fight than it ever has. Personal skill is king and you have even said that yourself when talking to Jesse. Speaking of weapon handling, let's go through your statements about weapon recoil. From the clips shown I saw some seriously chunky meta M4's in the "Now" section and an MDR. You popped off some spicy headshots which resulted in a one hit kill, so aight we have a clear demonstration of how different the ammo and armor values are. Seeing as bullets seem to do something now. But what I was more curious about was the recoil. Example time. At 12:15 we witness your M4 absolutely clap that dude from what appear to be stomach shots while you hold that reticle center mass. If there was more recoil there you would have a hard time convincing me that it was any different from current meta builds. The second is at 14:00 with the AK and the PSO-1. Again, if you tried that right now the first shot would jolt your view and you'd lose your target for a moment. But here from the first shot you have a perfect view and the gun is barely jumping. Like I don't get it, we're watching it play out, this is clearly not the case that guns were harder to control. This looks easier to use than it currently is and I decided to test it with the exact same weapon setup that you have in that clip to get a bit of a comparison since I had the game open at the time. The gun jumps way harder now and your view is more obfuscated by the eye relief vignette and by how violently the gun recoils. If you wanna say you had more fun back then, feel free because I get it. With familiarity comes contempt and we all eventually get sick of the things we really like and need a break. But this feels like you're lying to me to make a point. Maybe if you wanna make a proper comparison video you should get in touch with Nikita and have him send you a legacy build of the game so that we can get a direct, 1 to 1 view of what it was like then vs. now. Because in this setting with the footage I've been provided, I don't see how anything was "better."
@NinjaAnimations

yeah, I liked the video but it definetly seemed pretty biased and unfair to say that the game was "better" then when there were many elements that were worse.

i think my favorite part of old tarkov was how beefy people were. you wouldnt get melted by M855A1 in .2 seconds. i wish those ammos were harder to get so you need to use standered ammo more. people wouldnt die so fast and you can have a chance to have a drawn out gunfight.

I'm very sad that I only got into Tarkov when labs came out (dec 2018/jan 2019) because it was such a crazy money printing factory, then the next wipe they did keycards for labs, which were way too damn cheap and people still farmed it, then people farmed the hell out of reserve, and since then it's been a bit of clusterfuck in terms of people progressing too fast (imo) and the fun times only lasting a few weeks post wipe. The reason I'm sad that I didn't play it earlier is because everything feels insignificant, I feel very jaded. Yeah I just killed a trio that was fully geared but what's the point when I already have 200m rubles (basically all earned easily through bitcoin farm, mind you) and I can simply buy every single ammo, armor, attachment etc instantly? I come from games like ArmA and DayZ (mod and standalone) and the thing is because things were so damn rare, it felt SO good when you found something good. Maybe I'm just a sick fuck who only finds things enjoyable once I deprive myself of enjoyment (honestly possible) but it feels like it's common for many of us 3+ year Tarkov players to get bored easily at this point, and this is often the reason why. To be honest I think things took a turn for the worse when the drops started when reserve dropped - a lot of new players with the wrong expectations bought the game and ever since I feel like Nikita has been compromising for them too much. I know it sucks to hear but - some people just bought the wrong game, dude. I will respect whatever Nikita's vision is even if it completely contradicts everything I've just said. What's important to me is that the new people (post drops) who are often times more casual and new to the genre (hardcore/milsim/survival type stuff), don't make Nikita feel the need to compromise things. I know at some point Nikita himself said that he regretted the drops, and I can't say I disagree. There's a reason he stopped visiting online forums for many months after the new players joined...

From my perspective I feel like the older versions of Tarkov felt more like a video game(I know it is but by that I mean there was more "gameplay" in combat situations) and the updated Tarkov feels closer to real life. Which appeals to some and doesn't appeal to others. I believe this is where the vision of the developers and Nikita differ from the vision some of the fans have for the game. I personally love the way Tarkov feels now as a new player (level 26) and looking at old footage I understsnd how the gameplay might have been more enjoyable for some. I find myself way more immersed in the game now and couldn't really imagine it the other way around. (Being so slow, etc.)
