Judy was hardly the tragic figure she is too often thought of. She was an extraordinary person who led an extraordinary life. I think she did extremely well with the hand she was dealt. Liza herself said her mother loved life, loved to laugh, loved her craft, loved her audiences and loved her family. Judy died young, true, but she accomplished more in those 47 years than most of us do in 70. That’s a lot to celebrate.

@@ruthmarner6582 You're right; those who deny the obvious don't really know what the word means, as is commonly defined in legitimate dictionaries. The life of every alcoholic and drug addict is a tragedy. Yes, it is possible to have a sense of humor, enjoy kidding around, having a good laugh, like to party. But beneath all that, for Judy, was winding up without health, money, a home, possessions, family, and the thing that mattered most to her, work worthy of a star. Anyone should see the photos of her in May 1969 and say, "Tragedy? What tragedy?"

Can you imagine being eight years old (like Joey), having the most famous singer in the world as your mother, and appearing on a show with her that would be watched by tens of millions of people, and singing "Where is Love?" from _Oliver_ . Impossible burden to place on a boy? I don't know how Joey reacted to the situation, but if you look at that one shot while he is singing, Judy is so damn proud. I remember my mother and father, who were not famous at all, when I'd be doing something up on a stage in elementary school (like playing Abe Lincoln, Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny), beaming with pride. You're convinced at that age that you can do anything when you know you can rely on your parents to be proud of you. I hope Joey felt that way too. This show, sixty-one years later, is still a treasure. Thank you.

I don't think the kids would have thought of their mother that way at that age. She probably had to fight to get them on the stage at all, as kids are kids no matter who their parents are.

It's pretty obvious that Liza and Lorna modeled their singing style after their mother! Liza sounds almost exactly like her here, (although she did develop more of her own Caberet like style later on) and you can hear the onset of Judy Garland's voice with Lorna! Poor little Joey, tough act to follow, and that was a little painful, (Ain't his mama proud though?) but I'm sure he got much better later on! 😁

Lorna spilled the beans in her book about Joey, but no review or interviewer dared mention it. She said that Judy took her usual drugs during Joey's pregnancy, and that affected his brain development. Although it's often written that Joey has "worked behind the scenes" or has been "a photographer," there is no evidence he has ever been employed during his life.

Judy intentionally made hash out of Mel's lyric because he scolded her briefly for flubbing a phrase in his The Christmas Song before that. When she messed up, he said, "Close!" Thinking quickly, she sang "rainbows" instead of "raindeer," as a musical "Eff you, Mel, my own song is more important than yours."

Lorna looked rather uncomfortable when Judy was singing "Over the Rainbow". Every time her mother looked at her, she forced a smile and as soon as Judy looked away, the smile disappeared. It seemed like a comedy routine, but I doubt it was meant to be funny. It was sad to think that just six years later these kids lost their mother.
