The LEADER COMPANION 402 "Minecraft Edition" Laptop from 2022...is it any good for anything?

A lot of people ask for Laptop reviews and I rarely do them but I think this one is sure to be a fun one for everyone :)
This was a cashies find for $89. I know people have looked at this laptop before and I believe I watched RandomGamingInHD's video on this but I didn't remember too much on it so I wanted to do my own deep dive into this and see how it performs and well...I think you know what to expect with this one.
This is a Minecraft Edition laptop aimed for kids. It's a gimmick but is it any good though?

eMMC is like an sd card, i own a celeron n4000 based laptop (just for fun, i got this thing for dirt cheap), and i installed a sata ssd, had to solder it in, but it works fine, and i did some testing, while an ssd can do many requests simultaneously (read and write), the eMMC module isn't build for that, random reads and writes are awefull on those! The cpu is more capable than this, most of the slowdown comes from the eMMC, not from the cpu. Once it has a proper ssd, it will become way more useable :)

eMMC can't do parallel reads and writes, it's half-duplex interface, only one thing at a time.

@@floydlooney6837 i dont know how eMMC utilizes the cache of an external SSD, but when my cousin had his old and slow laptop with 5400rpm HDD, the disk utilization of the HDD went from 100% to about 30% just by connecting my 860 evo via usb 3.0, it really boosted the performance significantly for installing updates and games.

4:51 Most IPS displays in laptops are a lot slower than that, sitting at around 20-25ms GtG. Easily checked by looking at panelook catalogue... I guess it's a very slow TN panel, as even 15 years ago they could easily do 5ms.

For a used laptop I always just recommend used ThinkPads, if you get something like a T430 it's sturdy, upgradable and better than something like this. Yes, it's over ten years old but fully upgraded it still outperforms many of those celeron/i3 machines.

A slightly more powerful Thinkpad is the T440p with a GT 730M 1gb and up to an i7-4910MQ 4c 8t (technically you can upgrade to a 4980HQ but they are expensive and sketchy)

Yeah ThinkPads are tanks, but most of good models are hard to find as loooooots of them end in car workshop as they are perfect for basic diagnostic.

yep, thinkpads are a wonder, there is a reason if plenty of workplaces use it, tho i ended up getting myself a used ideapad 3 (260€ for an i5-10210U 8GB or ram and 256 or storage was a great deal), unlucky for me the 11th gen version appeared for 250€ the day after i bought it :)

I've personally used laptops like this back in 2014. It had an n2940, upgradeable ram and storage. Even after putting an SSD and 8gb ram it felt kinda slow, but it did what it promised to do. Used it for like 6 years and can't actually complain - it was fine for internet and older lightweight games.

I hope you can do another MC test with using optimization mods using the Fabric mod loader(not OptiFine), would definitely help us see what we can do with the java edition. You can easily access mods in Fabric launcher using the Prism launcher, which will help you download mods that can optimize the game so it can run on lower-end PCs with some decent framerates. Wanted to see how well this one can do with those modifications. For me I couldn't literally run MC with shaders with 60fps before only with OptiFine, now I can with 144fps using Fabric mod launcher and the optimization mods on there. Feel like other MC lovers out there would have a better solution on this, I just wanted to point out what I know that could help test the full potential of this laptop playing what it should, which is Minecraft. Always great work, will be watching you always as you keep uploading these interesting gadgets!

Re moving the mouse to the PC doesn't go to sleep etc... auto mouse mover by murgee. I've used this a lot to not get kicked from online games for idling, and it does a good job at preventing a PC from going into standby or doing the stupid idle drive indexing. After a set timeout of inactivity, it'll move the mouse by X amount of pixels every X seconds (all configurable), and stops the moment it sees actual input from your mouse (so it doesn't interfere with normal usage) till you leave it idle for the set amount of time again. It's honestly brilliant

A Dell Latitude 3330 is way better for about $300 with 256GB SSD storage, 8GB RAM, a 13" touchscreen display, backlit keyboard, and a full 360° hinge. Some specs may not be correct, my school has these, these specs are based on what is in those school laptops.

Heres a tip when playing Java addition! When you play Java edition, you may experience a lot of lag! For a computer which is “technically” low end, CANNOT play Minecraft Java. So in order to play Java, you MUST turn VSync off. VSync is an operator which optimizes the FPS based of how your laptop is. And how i said its low end… Its a low end. So I recommend turning off VSync. Another tip is that… If your FPS is capping to a limit for example like, 10 fps, 60fps. You can go to video settings, click on the framerates tab, then optimize the limit your fps can reach.

i know the struggle with those "power house" laptops because i had a potato myself. i had a core i3 and boi, after the update with windows 10 it slowed down so much lol (i upgraded the ram with 12gb and put an ssd on it) and i ended with a second hand core i7... it goes fast af boi! also with a couple of fix, i have now 0 errors. my awesome beast is perfect. as for this one, well just a kid could stay up to his speed. needless to say, it's better to get a second hand one. 6/10.

FEAR and FEAR 2 are fvckin' badass. Aside from Doom, those fear games are probably the games I played the most. I tried one level of F3AR and was so underwhelmed that I deleted the ISO- I mean, threw the disc in the trash. Don't worry, I bought 1 and the expansion packs, and 2. I think those games actually marked the last time I completed a video game. I kinda feel out of the hobby when my PC got a rootkit and then cockroaches nested in my subwoofer... I have a new shiny PC now, and I bought Doom eternal, but I'm too lazy to play games or something. It's weird.

Oh weird this must be a generic laptop cause I have one that is pretty much the exact same but mine is a UMAX VisionBook 12WRx Yellow, but mine has the M.2 slot and the USB-C and instead of J4105 it has a N4020 and 128GB eMMC which is suprisingly quick, it also came with Windows 11 Pro, but TPM was disabled in the bios (I eneabled it) also I got it for like 170usd which is more than twice what you paid, oh it it also came with stickers but not minecraft ones.

In my experience with cheap passively cooled laptops they have aggressive power caps because their 'heatsink' is just a tiny square of copper, not even any fins. Though this one has an unusually large piece of copper so maybe it could be unlocked a little with throttlestop and still run okay?

Yep, I was right. Battery and motherboard match Geobook G120 only difference is inclusion of USB C port. Afik Geobooks were a quick fix for UK lockdown in 2020 and kids needing a basic laptop for at home work. Marketed as a UK designed (assmbled in China) modern laptop. Leader have once again shown that Aussies have better marketing skills than stuffy old Blighty. I got my one thru govt training program (surplus handouts) otherwise it would have cost me 99UKP to 120UKP to buy. Pretty sure that is discounted stock sell off price. What Leader have done is imaginative trading. Only buy at Cashies price, though. Geobook sits on the shelf unloved (case of magic pillow disease 2 months in) while I moved on to Thinkpads and RasPis. The video kept me entertained at least, cheers.

I'm surprised that it even ran some of the games. J4105 is not a good CPU for, really anything but low tasks. Even with linux, it'd chug. N100 on other hand... That is an actual good low power CPU. edit: the protective film is to not short something out. I assume.

Actually J4105 is a decent CPU in its class (10 W) . This particular laptop lacks RAM and SSD (ate least 8/256 GB) . It does not help that Win 10 is bloatware.

I bought a HP with a Celeron in and when it was running W10 S the CPU was pegged at 75-90% before I'd actually done anything. When I opened up a browser it hit 100% and stayed there, it also came included with a HP keylogger to send all my info back to HP and McAfee AV just to make sure it never ran well... Useless, but people who buy these machines only look at the price and have no clue what the hardware is🤔🤔🤨🤨

The old Northwood Celerons did web browsing and word processing fine (atleast under xp). Although they really should of had some more L2 cache. Netburst loves it's memory bandwidth! Its depressing how the modern Celerons are often STILL dual cores. Miserable.

Yep, Windows S doesn't allow for apps to be installed unless they are from the ms store. This came with 11 when I got it but installed 10 home on it for the review

Minecraft Java Edition is the real version of Minecraft. Bedrock Edition is buggy mess and a mockery of Minecraft. This absolutely cannot run Minecraft. It is a literal piece of land waste.

Both is good. Bedrocks bugs are always overblown anyways, most of time it's still as stable as Java is without needing to mod it to even run decently. Also what do you count as mockery? overdramatic much? I've played both versions since 2011 and I won't ever get how you guys react to this version, they're different but nothing to cry over.

@@bibasik7 Pocket Edition is objectively a better game now than it was back then. You say Microsoft ruined it, but they have no hands on Minecraft's developement whatsoever. What changes ruined the game for you? How is the older pocket edition better?

@@kokomart_in Modern day bedrock edition has become nearly unplayable on a phone. The old pocket edition was comfortably playable on a 3.5" screen, while modern bedrock edition barely works on modern-day smartphones. For example, every time you tap on an item in your inventory, the item's name pops up and blocks half the screen for a second, making fast inventory management impossible.

@@bibasik7 How old is your phone? Any phone from 5 years ago can handle modern PE just fine. Hell my phone is 5 years old and it still runs well, with none of the issues you stated. The game isn't gonna stay low spec forever, the bigger the updates the bigger the performance hit. But fot the past 4 years they've done well optimizing the game since version 1.20.52 runs better than 1.11 and 1.12
