one more parallel you forgot was how Kenai interpreted denahi's intentions towards Koda in the final fight, Denahi did not care about Koda he just wanted to get the spear, but Kenai reacted as a bear would, defending it's cub, the exact same thing Koda's mom did against him and his brothers in the begging, koda was never in danger in either scenarios, kenai and sitka where not even looking in his direction, but his mother still saw them as a threat so she attacked. Likewise sitka saw her as a threat to his brothers so he took his own life to defeat her, also unaware of her intention or reason for attacking. Kenai did the exact same thing for Koda which led to his redemption in sitka's eyes

You described 2 things about this film that I've never been able to put my finger on when I try to defend it: - The fact that just because it follows some typical story beats, doesn't make it a bad film. - Koda being a lovable example of the "annoying kid" character. Perhaps it's because he's a bear, and any annoying tendancies he may have are brushed off by him being a bear? He speaks in a super believable way too, nothing he says is too complicated or lacks innocence.

Personally, I think it’s because of the tonal/mood whiplash: the first twenty minutes of the film are epic and dramatic, while things get cartoony and vibrant with talking animals once Kenai wakes up after falling from the cliff into the river, and from then on out it’s a roller coaster of highs and lows between the two tones

I truly think the transformation scene from Brother Bear is the most beautiful transformation scene in any Disney movie. The colors are gorgeous and the music is great! It’s also interesting to note that Kenai pretty much is the only chararacter who doesn’t wear clothes when he’s turned back into a human. I get why most movies give their characters clothes when they’re turned back, of course, but it doesn’t really make any sence…

I'm 1/3 Native, and they handled it well. It's not 100%, but the basic idea of our ancestors always watching over us, and our spirits being brought back as our 'Totems' is pretty spot-on. Hence why they have such a strong connection and respect to the earth and animals we are all a part of nautre Not often we get POSITIVE reviews of Brother Bear. Thank you

If it is ok, I am surprised people were surprised or mad that Kenai and Sitka turned into animals. There are many Inuit and Native American myths that rely on people turning into animals to further its messages especially with how the world was created. I just took it as Disney making the film with this mythological style. It is not turning a person in an animal to just turn him into a animal. There was a lesson Kenai needed to learn and being a bear helped do that. It also had a similar style to myths we read. However, I do understand the other side of the argument. Minorities are referred to as animals and Disney just turning people of color into animals may confirm that. I just feel this film was trying to doing something different from that. I felt they were paying attention or trying to pay attention to the culture at play and how lessons were told through stories which do involve transformations and animals.

I always personally thought of it as just a fun little themed animation as a kid, and I still do and wish that others could do so. Though it's like Technoblade once joked "if you put 10,000 people in a room, eventually some of them are going to be serial killers".

I feel like people believing it was just to turn indigenous people into animals is an incredibly cynical view of the film considering it is based heavily based on mythology, which is Animist.

As someone who's indigenous and went to a school that was specifically about teaching us our ways-- the movie is pretty okay with rep, it's a bit more then bear minimum (lol i had to). I just wish we saw more time with them as humans, but ig sense it was integral to the story and message then it gets a small pass. It does do some justice with native culture, with the whole ancestors watching over us, the spirits being with us and animals being seen by majority of being equal. So I appreciate it, just some small grips here and there but most of it is pretty good. I'd give it a 7.5/10 in how good the representation is

I can agree with this, despite not remembering much. Also, I would like to ask a question about what kind of perspective do you have on your Furry fandom? And also how connected I as a Mexican am to indigenous people, just out of curiosity since I want to know how much I can relate and learn from this and how close it'll be to the stories down in South America. I know they are two different things though for the sake of conversation and just to satisfy my boredom and just cause I want to learn something new.

9:40 I never thought about Denahi picking up his brother's weapon and the meaning behind the scene, one more reason added to the pile of why I love this movie. Also one thing that I've always loved that you didn't mention is how the mother bear's eyes at the start of the movie look unreadable but after Kenai gets turned into a bear they all have these human eyes and are made to be relatable because we have now joined their world. We can understand their language and read their facial expressions, unlike the unfamiliar eyes of the mother bear

THE TOTEM QUIZZ! I spent as much time on that menu than watching the actual movie. It's so rare to see people actually giving some appreciation for this movie. People usually judge it for what they wish it would be rather than for what it actually is, and I think that's unfair to the film. You're also the first person to agree with me that having a song during the confession scene so we can't hear exactly what Kenai told Koda strengthens rather than weakens the scene. I don't think there is any dialogue that could have made the revelation as much of a gut-punch than simply seeing Koda slowly put the pieces of the story together and hjs horrified expression when it's over. Are you willing to ever speak about the sequel? I watched it as many times as the original as a kid and while it's certainly a bit strange it has a special place in my heart. I also really love Nita.

There is a full confession scene, but it was never fully animated. In the scene Kenai doesn’t say a lot of new things than the things we’ve seen in the movie up until that point: he did something really bad, so the great spirits turned him into a bear to make up for what he did. Though he didn’t know anything about being a bear and had to learn from another. Then it cuts to the things we do hear; “Koda, I did something very wrong.” Only in the deleted scene does Kenai literally say that he killed a bear, after which he says that Koda’s mom is not coming, making Koda connect the dots. He tells Koda that he swears he didn’t know it was his mom, but Koda runs away. I do believe that the song version is more powerful, because the lyrics “Brother Bear, I let you down. You trusted me, believed in me and I let you down. I cannot hide the shame, there’s nothing I can say or do to take away the pain.” hit me in the gut harder than Kenais full confession did.

Yeah, Denahi is an Anti-Villain (at worst)-he’s a guy with a very understandable motive who believed that his brother was killed and/or eaten by the same bear that contributed to their elder brother’s demise, unaware that his brother IS a bear

We had the bootleg version of brother bear and I still remember that DVD and playing it so much it would skip. I thought it was a funny adventure film about bears. Boy was I wrong, I saw it back when it was on Netflix a few years ago and I literally cried, I haven't seen it again since and that was 6 years ago. I don't know I guess 5-year-old me didn't know how traumatizing that movie was. Aside from the beautiful blend of traditional and CG animation and music s/o to you Phil, it had a story. A story that still rings true today. We need to respect nature and it's inhabitants. It took Kenai becoming a bear and acting as surrogate to Koda for him to understand that these creatures have a purpose too. The end when Kenai reunites with sitka and Koda reunited with his mom and they both returned to the spirit world together I literally fell out. It was a full circle moment and honestly they didn't even need to make a sequel. I want to watch it again but I have to mentally prepare myself. I know I sound melodramatic but I'm even getting teary eyed typing this 😭

Watching all the new Disney animated films, they only made me appreciate more and more the experimental era. Sure we had some embarrassments like Dinosaur and Chicken Little, but I will remember those movies because they're different of the Disney formula. Brother Bear is different of what most Disney movies are. It's not a fairy tale or a musical, it's not about a princess, it's not even an Outcast story, it's about a human who has to learn what it truely means to be a man and how he has to choose love over grief. It's not a perfect movie, and neither one of my favorites, but Brother Bear will always be an enjoyable watch to me. I have fun memories watching the film, and I still do to this day.

Aside from that, this movie is very dear to me, a little bit surprised to rediscover the somewhat mature topics that it touched on. I used to watch it a lot when I was a kid, I think I still have the VHS tape. As I said, great video and yes!!! More. Bloopers. Scenes. Those were always super fun 🥰

The perception of human by animals and vice versa plays a big part in the character conflicts as well. As a human Kenai sees bears, specifically Koda’s mother, as a fish stealing monster and his transformation is direct karmic punishment for this. By joining the animal kingdom he better understands and respects it. Denahi doesn’t have the benefit of this insight and nearly kills his brother before realising the bear he’s trying to kill is indeed Kenai. Koda views humans as hunters, to be feared especially because of their pointy sticks, only trusting Kenai because of the ursine appearance. On the mountain all three have their preconceptions swept away and become better for it, understanding that man or bear, neither are truly monsters.

i absolutely adored this movie as a child! I had it on i believe dvd, and while I don't remember much of it, I remember my mom mentioned it to me a lot because of how much I loved it! I think the dvd ended up getting really scratched up over time so after a while I stopped watching it, but I still have nothing but fond memories around it

The movie is only "okay" to me, it's far from bad but I dign't connect to it enough to think about watching it again, except for one scene: the one when Kinai immediately confesses to Koda. Not only it destroys my most hated trope, "the liar reveal", but since I was a kid I admired Kinai's honesty and in that moment I started rooting for him. I recommend people to give this movie a shot for that scene alone. Also you're the first english-speaker person I hear talking good things about Phil Collins lol

It’s the moment Kenai gives up his pride, knowing he has to do one of the hardest things he’s ever done up to that point because he owes Koda the truth and it’s the first opportunity he can do this. He’s not coerced, it’s not Koda learning from another source, it’s Kenai doing the right thing because his conscience tells him that.

With all the mixed opinions I've seen on video reviews for this movie, your take is a breath of fresh air. Always felt like Brother Bear was a pretty solid movie, also greatly backed up by the inclusion of Phil Collins' songs, and doesn't get nearly enough credit as it deserves. Awesome work! :D

Aw man I loved this movie so much growing up! My dad and I still quote the Moose brothers’ I Spy tree game at least once per month, so it’s nice to see someone actually doing a deeper dive into it. It’s definitely got it’s issues representation- wise, and I am also definitely not an expert on that either, but it’s still an interesting, nostalgic film for me, so thanks!!

Here's a Fun fact. There was originally supposed to be a brother bear series on disney channel after the success of the first movie. it would have been about the everyday adventures of koda and kenai going about life in the wilderness and meeting different animals. So essentially it would have been one of those sequel series cartoons much like lilo and stitch where it isn't really story driven and it just focuses on their daily life and adventures. It got shelved because i believe they wanted to make room for another show at that time so they ultimately passed on this idea. If you want to read more about there is an article on the AV club i found.

My boyfriend has never seen it so I'm looking forward to watching it again. It's probably been 4 or 5 years since I've seen it. Although, we always listen to the songs on road trips. Face it: if this movie was 3D and it has Lin Manuel Miranda songs in it, people wouldn’t think it’s bad. I love this film since I was a kid but yeah there were so plot pacing problems but the core message and the way it was delivered were 👏 If Disney would remake stuff, remake the underrated Disney films of 2000s.

It's really good. Get the tissues. One of my favorite scenes is when they're alone and Koda tells the story of how he got separated from his mother and Kenai realizing that he killed her, because now Kenai really has to take a look at himself and live with the fact that he took the life of a child's mother. Honestly top tier 🙌🏿
