I think there's a fear of rejection with women his own age that doesn't apply as much to older women. My grandfather had a preference for younger women after he divorced my grandmother, which was before I was born. I only knew him to date women around 15-20 years younger than him and my mother HATED it. They were so close to her age, and it drove her insane.
