Daniel Schmachtenberger | Green Pill #26
Daniel Schmachtenberger is a founding member of The Consilience Project, aimed at improving public sensemaking and dialogue. He is researching and propagating the idea of the Metacrisis, which outlines the totality of risk that we face as a species and planet.
The systems that compose our society generally seek to trend in two directions-toward dystopia and catastrophes. Is there a way we can avoid these fates? Daniel says yes, via the third attractor: creating a more antifragile world that takes advantage of our exponential technologies.
This is the first in a series of episodes with Daniel, in which the CoordiNation will get to the bottom of the Metacrisis and how we may best address it.
Take the green pill anon.

This was a great conversation. I highly enjoyed the discussion, Daniel is doing an excellent job on shining a light on this issue. We're in a desperate need of new models of governance and especially moving into the digital realm. I would add the following, which is what I am doing to fight the techno-feudalism challenge we will all have to face: I am part of Eden, a blockchain based application(DAO) designed to reach consensus within groups of individuals with common goals. It is comprised of 400 members as of today and growing, from China to Nigeria, Canada to India, Europe to Australia, Saudi Arabia and Israel to Russia and everything in between(without counting the other language Edens forking). We are gathering the world in Eden. The premise is that we use Fractal Governance by creating small groups which allow for short yet more intimate discussions to present ideas, ourselves, and our visions and reach thereafter consensus and decide on our Representatives, and repeat amongst the chosen representatives until there are less than 10, of which a speaker/chairman is chosen at random and decisions are made by consensus at all levels. We are looking for more membership and for this to spread, in hopes of creating a more cohesive society at all scales of community, with more direct and involved representation in governance systems, economic structures, cooperatives and non-profits. The application is functional but is still in an active developmental phase, we welcome contribution. We are growing our community of concensus oriented people who would like to find different ways of coming together and affecting change in their environment. If you are interested in being part of the revolution, a return to community based value generation, and networking with brilliant entrepreneurial individuals, don't hesitate to reach out, or look us up. Google edeneos organization, or reach out directly by asking for MoZDS in the EdenOnEOS Telegram Channel, I'll be happy to induct anyone who's on the same wavelength as I am in regards to Daniel Schmachtenberger's ideas.

The underlying pattern/common denominator/generator function: the human mind. The most urgent and important thing is the further development of the human mind. "We are unlikely to effectively solve these problems unless we truly understand their ultimate source: the human mind. In our view, to survive and flourish…we must look inward. In an era defined by human impact, the most pressing questions of this time are about ourselves. The duration and prosperity of our species’ journey together on this planet will, in part, be determined by the extent to which we can come to understand our minds and apply the lessons we learn to how we live our lives." - Nathaniel Barr & Gordon Pennycook

How between optimism and pessimism A commitment to optimism that is attached to solution in the unknown unknowns With pessimisticism, red teaming specific propositions. Internal kind of autodidactic processes as well as a group process as well as a intergroup that should happen. A commitment to bring solutions about even if they don’t know how yet. A commitment to sitting. Thinking. Meditating. Writing, Until we come up with ideas about what to do. What does it mean to commit to something you don’t yet know how to do right.? There is something in the unknown unknowns set that can solve this… I feel morally obligated . To solve this. With a passion that one could die for that. Being committed even if you don’t know how, which means you will keep working at it even if it fails you’ll find another way rather that just give up….it's both what will be most likely to succeed and where you can be most at peace if you fail and die in the process. Because if I want to fail I want to do it this way… I want to have been aligned in this way in the process. But I don't want to fail from stuff that I could have figured out! So I want to red team my own ideas. Pessimism in service to effective optimism, that reconciles those two parts within us as well. Then take all that constraint into the design problem…Let me keep working on a new design, then I try again… It might not be perfect but it is adequate to move the thing forward.

The concept of "Entropy" is often included in emerging sensemaking narratives along with its complement, "Syntropy", and I have been giving thought to this duality and how it relates to the predicaments of the Anthropocene. Spreading awareness and understanding of Syntropic power may be the third attractor... --- The supreme good is like water, which nourishes all things without trying to. It is content with the low places that people disdain. Thus it is like the Tao. --- Many have been struggling to better envision how to transition away from our entropic civilization toward a spontaneous self- expanding syntropic community. If this goal also interests you, please take time to consider the perspectives and questions below. Any feedback is much appreciated. As you know, entropy (and negentropy/syntropy) reflect how matter and energy change with time. As captured in the 2nd law of Thermodynamics: overall, things will progressively decay and become more chaotic, disordered and incoherent as time passes, and with less capacity for "useful" transformation. On the other hand, the universe and our planet have been evolving toward increasing order, syntropy and meaningful information. These rhythmic patterned exchanges of matter and energy have been embodied in the three kingdoms of life (matter/energy > plant growth > animal growth > fungi > repeat) and have created expanding capacity for information processing, including consciousness, social behavior, learning and human culture. Information theory and recent theories of mind are based on these same patterns of entropy vs syntropy. The Anthropocene dawned when human groups began to harness ever greater capacity for entropic power in which energy is narrowly focused in order to fragment materials, tissues and even chemical bonds - often for the purpose of killing and dismembering. Entropic power involves a fast, precise, and intentionally "optimized" flow of destructive energy based on positive feedback (e.g. exponential and unstable), often with unforeseen, "externalized" and longer lasting harms (winners and losers). Examples include fire, the sharp edges of flint tools, arrowheads, spears, the plow, bullets, and then explosives, combustion engines, nuclear fission, and all manner of modern tech. In the information sphere, entropic energy flow/power involves hidden information and deception for the purpose of manipulating or defeating others. At the spiritual level, entropic power enslaves us to desire and fear, hubris and hate, and separates into "us and them" - "lock and load, it's kill or be killed, and might makes right." These typically masculine technologies and attitudes have facilitated an ever greater concentration coercive entropic power and control, forming patriarchal, hierarchical, warring civilizations. This progressive growth and concentration of entropic power has been the foundation of imperialism and industrial capitalism, and is culminating in our planet's 6th mass extinction of life. On the other hand, the syntropic power of living things involves synthesizing matter, energy and information into holistic growth patterns of reciprocity and exchange. These rhythmic patterns of energy flow involve self-regulation by negative feedback, and are spontaneous, decentralized, slow, initially inefficient, and generally non-coercive (free choice), but provide win-win benefits and unexpected long-term efficiencies. They are typically feminine. From atomic and chemical evolution within stars, to cellular life, geo-ecology and the brain, syntropic patterns are woven throughout our planet's evolving beauty as understood by indigenous worldviews, Eastern wisdom traditions (e.g. the Taoism) and modern complexity/systems science. These syntropic world views, including the synoptic gospels of Jesus (especially red-letter translations or Jeffersonian Bible), offer low-cost and practical psychosocial strategies to help us (especially men) to turn away from the seductively addictive path of seeking and gathering destructive power and control. Buckminster Fuller, who conceived the term "Syntropy" as a response to the static principles of design and architecture of his day, would surely embrace the growing appreciation of its ecological and moral aspects as well. I wonder whether you folks would agree that the syntropic flow of information, energy and matter through our physical and metaphysical worlds should be viewed as a unifying thread - its unnamable way? Perhaps recognizing the elusive patterns and principles of its pervasive presence can help us transcend the baffling paradoxes and calamitous predicaments of the Anthropocene, and help us advance toward a culture based on spiritual and planetary regeneration? What are your thoughts about Elinor Ostrom's empirical identification of strategies that Syntropic communities have adopted to effectively resist the tragedy of the commons? Could Ostrom's design principles for Common Pool Resource help us to transcend the multipolar trap predicament? [BTW, in response to criticism based on economic/game theory, she replied, "A resource arrangement that works in practice can work in theory."] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elinor_Ostrom --- In dwelling, live close to the ground. In thinking, keep to the simple. In conflict, be fair and generous. In governing, don’t try to control. In work, do what you enjoy. In family life, be completely present. When you are content to be simply yourself and don’t compare or compete, everybody will respect you. --- Thank you for your dedication to sensemaking & meaningful truth. I look forward to any comments on this.

I really hope Daniel can find a community in the psychological research side of things that could coordinate with the community in the coding/tech/AI/big data space. Daniel touched on the concept of the need to extract collective values from community and use them to guide both human and AI decision making. Something I started to think about around 6 years ago was a voting compass style survey on steroids. We need psychologists expert in understanding the complexities of human value systems, along with behaviour and drives etc., human psychology as a whole, and also the skills and understanding on how to design and construct reliable and valid psychological surveys because the current voter compass survey is a very crude and blunt Instrument. If you couple a survey tool like this that can reliably map a valid representation of a community’s values and priorities with big data management/AI assisted analysis etc, we have a way then to genuinely find/select community representatives who closely align with the community values and priorities as a whole using that as their directive in governance rather than using the highly flawed and easily manipulated popularity contests with the representative’s directive coming from party politics and hidden agendas of lobbyist groups. Using a comprehensive survey to select who you vote for takes away all the need for advertising and debate which helps eliminate a big chunk of corruptive forces from the system. Outsiders in the political race could voluntarily take the survey and encourage their constituents to take the survey to see how well they align. Those with values who most closely align with the majority of the electorate will naturally attract the most votes without having to take money from lobbyists to advertise. If your representatives are freed from having to follow the will of their campaign donators or their non existent party then they are free to assess legislation based on its merit guided by their electoral community’s values. When governance can operate this way it opens up the possibility for so many solutions to be implemented that are currently blocked at every turn by a powerful elite who don’t want it. A voluntary system like this could ultimately be implemented as a replacement of voting. Obviously many supporting structures, oversight and transparency would need to go with it. We all can understand our own values and priorities to a reasonable degree (especially if we are forced into thinking deeply about them by filling out an extensive survey) and we are much better equipped to do that than voting based on supporting or not supporting solutions that we likely have no real understanding of how or if they would work. As individuals, we don’t have the time or expertise to work it out. If we can allocate the oversight of that task to someone we know is not corrupted and has a close approximation to our values and priorities who can then do the hard yards to oversee and understand the work of experts and make decisions based on that, we are much more likely to get affective solutions that work for all community as a whole rather than the current system of Voting for a political agenda driven “solution” that poorly fits the actual dynamic problem space and ignores the values and priorities of the broader community if they conflict with the current powerful corruptive forces.
@yvonnereed167
@yvonnereed167 Жыл бұрын
Issues I know would need to be solved for once a valid and reliable survey was created would include: - how to make a valid comparison between two profiles. (Ie giving a percentage match and report of differences) - allocating a “deal breaker” category where there may be a very high values and priorities match but a clash on one or two non negotiable values and priorities. - collating individual profiles into community profiles. - privacy/security for the data of those taking the survey - literacy as a barrier to using the system - transparency around how the data is used - robustness of the survey so it can’t be deliberately manipulated to make a candidate resemble their electorate when they actually do not.

Good watch. Though perhaps a bit focused on real concerns only as a means to argue for unreasonable measures. The problems are advanced and so should be our solutions, focused on the intellectual and humane. There is also an argument that humanity is at an adolescent stage of development, we haven't reached a pinacol of evolution and can grow beyond the shallowest aspects of human nature described here. Enforcement isn't the only way to stop bad things happening, and in many cases doesn't stop bad things happening. It is though in a vast majority of cases abused or inadequately used. Can still remember Jean Charles de Menezes, being wrongfully assassinated on a tube we used to catch.

What kind of policy or change would you make based on having that research?
@JohnChampagne
@JohnChampagne Жыл бұрын
We can charge fees to industries proportional to how much damage they impose on the larger environment. A democratic society would raise fees just high enough to cause overall impacts of various kinds to match limits that most people think are acceptable. (We could offer a set quantity of permits for sale at auction to produce the same effect.) We could choose, as a policy matter, to hold overall impacts steady over time, or to slowly increase or slowly decrease impacts of any particular kind, by adjusting the fees (or by changing the number of permits sold at auction). The policy can be made fair (so that the least well-off are not made worse-off) by sharing fee proceeds to all people. With impacts on the environment held steady, we'd have a steady-state economy, as measured by throughput of raw materials. Ideas might be developed that allow us to make use of scrapyards or landfills from decades past as resources, or that allow us to better-utilize natural resources. (Wealth might increase.) But for the most part, we would see a shift away from production of luxury goods in favor of production of essentials. A change in the opinion of the people about how much impact on the environment to allow, toward more strict limits, would make this overall shift in focus more pronounced. Industries would thrive to the degree that they are able to meet human needs at the least cost to the larger environment and future generations. A system of random surveys can show what average opinion is regarding various kinds of impact, such as extraction rates, quantity of emissions or extent of or type of encroachment onto wildlife habitat. A system of surveys that allows respondents time to reflect on a question and discuss with others could ensure that the opinions of trusted experts will be taken into account in the process.

A steady state economy requires a monetary system tied to physical materials, something like the gold standard, and also an end to interest. Interest compounds, but the material basis for the money to repay it does not. Check out the Center for the Advancement of a Steady State Economy, and any written works by Herman Daly.

I would push back on the assumption that one group will for example overfish the sea because if they don't someone else will. We see countless examples of countries acting against their own interests for the greater good. The newly elected Colombian president one on promises to ban oil exploration, fracking and opem pit mining. Sri Lanka has en ESG score of 98% and were willing to risk societal collapse (which did come to pass) for the greater good.

You "exception" proves the rule. By choosing to not contribute to the problem, Sri Lanka (assuming your statement is valid) collapsed and as such is unable to continue contributing to solving the problem. Daniel didn't get into it much in this video, but he has many others where he talks about how certain tech HAS to be utilized by all cultures, or the cultures that reject it will cut themselves out of a place in the future. The given paradigm states that technology, AI is the solution, DS does not challenge that! This paradigm also assumes that human beings can survive, let alone prosper, in a world that is logic-based, non-relational, disempowering, deskilling and dehumanising. Daniel is a great mind, a great guy as well, but I cannot fathom the source of the meaning for his better- designed, AI-run, artificial world. It does not set me on fire.....

I am not convinced by the Catastrophes Dystopia dichotomy: I understand that a centralized power might become authoritarian but what is in general needed is not centralized power but a global structure which makes the problem more approachable. For example with the problem of wars: if UN would have an army much stronger than the army of any country it seems to me that the problems of major wars could be solved. The decision for the army to intervene should be taken by a very large majority. To make a large majority of countries agree is hard but that is exactly what you want for a military intervention. This is not a centralized system so it is harder to get corrupted and it would have as a general effect the decrease of military everywhere. If all country decrease their military UN military would decrease too, as its only purpose would be to be stronger than the military of any individual country. The only people who could find such a scenario dystopian are probably in US as such an army already exists today--the US army. The fact that it would be under the control of UN would make the situation only less dystopian than it is today. This type of solution seems to me similar to the problem in optimization: in order to find global optimum by considering local optimum and variations it is convenient to have a large number of variables and not to have large volatility. For the problem at hand the number of variable is given by the large number of countries. Taking out the real conflict and replacing it with dialog in UN also decreases the volatility of the situation.

@OctavePangea you don't understand. I am saying that I love the fact he says "fuck", that tends to be a sign of intelligence in critical debate as it further affirms the freedom to be. At the same time, I believe in the power of pettiness to change the world and as such I thereby took the opportunity to point out that his persona would be sunned from the church of gitcoin given its authoritarian instinct in not allowing creators use such expression in describing how they want to affect the world. To that, I say, fuck that shit, and fuck gitcoin and the power tripping minions that stray us from democratic practice and the beauty of intelligent expression.

I’m disappointed; I hold you guys to a high standard. You’re failing. I can’t listen to this environmentalist bs. You guys usually expose underlying assumed false premises. This is full of dubious false premises. This guys sucks! Each “issue” he mentions is full of false assumptions. 😢

Environmentalalism is bullshit? Do you have a means of existing outside of the environment? Considering false premises, is it possible that your own premise is false? I hope you're a spam bot, but if you are indeed a human, I hope you'll take a minute to consider what exactly it is about environmentalism that triggers you.
