Lifting heavy and HIIT stopped working for me in my late 30s, it was too much for my body. I started feeling like crap and was gaining weight and my physique was getting bulky, especially my upper body. I’ve changed to yoga, walking, Pilates, body weight exercises and one 30-40min full body workout once a week with light to medium weights. I’ve slimmed down and my arms look better than they did with regular weight training and HIIT.

Interesting! You hear so much about lifting heavy for women and hormones. I find that my arms are bulky too because I arill have a layer of fat over them. I used to do pilates and am thinking of getting back into body weight weight training and walking as well. Its making more sense to me.
@rnguyen2516 Жыл бұрын
I was wondering if body weight (like in Pilates or yoga) counted as lifting weights as you get older. I love the look that Pilates provides and feel it’s the best fit for me because I have bad knees 😢. I hope that’s enough, along with walking, swimming and other strength exercises!
@radiantdevi1 Жыл бұрын
@@rnguyen2516I have bad knees too, I would like to know that too! From my own body I feel regular pilates, pilates reformer, pilates with resistance bands or small weights, yoga with small weights classes, & ashtanga yoga - build nice long lean muscle.
@radiantdevi1 Жыл бұрын
@@AR-mu4zq yes as I got older I had that layer of fat over lots of muscle it looked terrible and out of proportion to the rest of my body, as my legs stay slim even with lifting heavy weights. It seems to be genetic too, when my Mum was in her 30s she lifted weights and only got bulky on top. I’m actually doing less intense exercise now (&eating the same) but I’ve lost that layer of fat and I’m way more toned. I feel like lifting 3 or more times per week for me didn’t suit my body type and was creating too much cortisol in my body, hence the Weight gain.

Lifting weights are awesome. I started lifting when I was 17. I’m 55 now. Back in college I was one of the only girls in the weight room at my university’s rec center. I would be interested in your comments. I’m 61, female, & have been intermittent fasting and attempting keto (with occasional blips) for 4.5 months now. I have lost about 10lbs, BUT my body analyser scale tells me that my fat % has only changed by 0.3%!! My fat percentage is 25.5%!!! So I must have lost muscle, which was not my intention. I give my age because I think being post menopausal & very unfit has much to do with it. However, I’m eating very little and possibly (inadvertently) lowering my base metabolic rate, which I don’t want to do. Getting into keto is VERY hard & the slightest thing (eg: two tsps of skimmed milk in tea) seems to stop keto. I’m at a loss to know what to do because I can’t afford to lose more muscle. I need to gain muscle but lose fat. I’m quite discouraged about it.

But I keep trying! But keto at 20 carbs or less I feel wrecked me, so I will never do it again, low carb yes, but not keto.

Regular dexa scans are not necessary and too much radiation. Another way for the medical industry to make money. We will have bone loss when aging, period. It’s also another way for doctors to put people on fosamax and other dangerous meds. This is way too complicated. Just eat healthy, get good sleep, weight training, aerobic exercise, social interaction, drinking lots of water and a spiritual life. It needs to be made easy for people to live a healthy lifestyle and not all these expensive gadgets, testing and supplements.

My measurements go up when I’m increasing muscle through my weight training and I maintain my BF level. The heavier I go on the weight I don’t feel as much in the targeted muscle group as I do when I go a-little lighter. Ex. Hack squats/ hip thrusts if I use let’s say 45 on each side for the hip thrust I feel more in my hamstrings. If I drop to 35 each side my glutes are on fire. Why is that?

Question, i just turned 40, i am breastfeeding my 7 month old, not planning to stop until he is at least one, hoping to make it to 18 months. Recently i have been going back to the gym. Ive been a little apprehensive of changing my diet because of breastfeeding. Do you have any tips for losing fat and building muscle while being 40 and in this post-partum phase of life? An interesting thing I have noticed is when i work out, my body seems to make more milk during the workout. I am 5'2" and 160 lbs, but I dont know my body make up yet.
@littlemom2070 Жыл бұрын
From one mom to another. I too was an older mother and I did no workouts at all for 9 months postpartum. I breastfed both my kids until they were two (of course they got solid food at proper time and by the end only comfort breastfeeding once a day) I ate normally, and lost the postpartum fat in about a year and was at the lowest weight of my life. Your body is really burning a lot of calories just by breastfeeding. I started working out at about 9 months after birth and built up very slowly. I think you are wise not to worry about diet so much at this time, you need the calories from nutritious wholesome foods to produce milk. Good luck and enjoy this time, it’s so fleeting.

Love your videos! Question...I'm 66 and always work out in a fasting mode....well bulletproof coffee exception. How is that viewed by health experts?! ❤
@jjvirginvideos Жыл бұрын
Hi Cynthia, thanks for being here! Ideally, you would wake up, break your fast with a loaded smoothie full of about 30 grams of protein, and work out about two hours later. This should keep your blood-sugar levels stable enough not to cause dizziness, and give you the protein you need to power through an intense workout. If you do a fasted workout or push a workout too long after a meal, it’s possible you’re not exercising with the fuel you need. Experiment with a few different schedules that help you keep your blood-sugar levels optimal throughout your workout. Cheers - Team JJ

I absolutely fear melatonin because every time I've taken it it makes me feel like I'm dying. I don't like feeling out of control of my body or like something's taking it over and forcing it to drift off into sleep. That is not relaxing to me that's terrifying

How much protein should you take every day, after age 60?
I weight a 100 pond how can i tight up my lose skin on body what i need to do
@davidadcock338210 ай бұрын
You can utilize all the protein you can eat in one meal. I only eat one meal a day. I shoot for at least 250 grams of protein in the one meal, more is better. I have built a lot of muscle and strength doing so. Do Not let anyone tell you that you need to spread out your protein consumption during the day. New research has proven that to be false and as I personally have also proven. I am 74 years old.

I am beginning my strength training journey. I was told a year ago that I had to lose 150 pounds. I started internment fasting. I lost 20 pounds, but now I have zero energy. I just ordered creatine. I take collagen and working on increasing my protein. How many days a week should I strength train, and how many for cardio? ❤
@englishgarden2036 Жыл бұрын
It sound like you're not getting enough food. Adding more protein is great. I'm on a weight loss journey and was told I need to loose 100 pounds. I do intermittent fasting, but only for 4 hours, in between meals. I will eat a snack, if I'm hungry. I gained my weight because I had a back and neck injury that precluded my ability to workout. I was sedentary for 11 years. I overate and the weight caught up to me. I used to be athletic and know some things about eating right and working out to gain muscle and to loose weight. This is my program: I always have a plan. Planning is key. I write down my exercise plan. Eat whole foods ( nuts, seeds, fish, chicken, turkey, veggies, berries). Do HIIT training using weights 2x or 3x a week. HITT training using weights will help shed the fat (my doctor told me that 30 minutes of HIIT training is equivalent to running 3 miles). Full body weight training 2x a week. I do body weight training and weight training with dumbbells. Some people say body weight training is very hard for people who are overweight. This is TRUE. It's hard to lift your own weight. However, I do it to challenge my body and only once a week. Once I loose more weight, I will do my body weight training. And some yoga everyday. Vitamin D and C and a multi vitamin. Lots of rest and sleep. Sleep is so important for weight lose.

Lifting is great, just be sure to never do some of the common exercises like the upright rows mentioned here, they are super bad for shoulders cuz of impingement

My problem is my wrists ( 3-4 inches thin) and weak shoulders, I'm short and small frame, so my legs are fine lifting but i can't hold weights...

I started 900 mg buffered creatine monohydrate per capsule , 2 capsules a day and noticed how bloated my belly looked , to the point that you Would think I was expecting 😮 Then read this , This loading phase requires about 20g per day taken for 5-7 days to speed up the process of muscle saturation. After the loading phase, the dose is dropped to a maintenance phase of about 3-5g daily. what do you recommend on dose to avoid such an egregious bloat ?

But how do we build muscle if we aren't hormonally balanced? Meaning after menopause without our youthful levels of hormones, we simply can't build muscle...sarcopenia happens? I am genuinely asking.

Welp.... I'm the only one wiman here who's..... 70! Yes, and recently found my metabolic age/real age is a happy 64.2 after taking a lifestyle test... Also, having relocated from NYC to the Southeast has helped subtract years off My Life! I do resistance traing on gym machines and 15-20 treadmill... I stretch for about 20 upon awakening too, as a result I'm much more flexible and I mive easier😊
