Surprisingly it's actually a legit name, though used more abundantly in the last two or three centuries. It has since fallen heavily out of use, so it's kind of more vintage. When every girl was named either Elizabeth or Catherine you had to use nicknames to differentiate, so Kitty/Kit was a common nickname for Catherine.

As an ex-barista with hearing issues, the amount of times I've just had to guess is insane. It's like the gulag, you either get out or your stuck in agony forever, staying up at night thinking about the time you got that customers name wrong. Also, as someone with ADHD the hyperfixation thing is so real.
