I think you make a really good point about how some critics approach movie these days. They tend to act like their in a flim studies classroom and go over things that regular film viewers to be blunt do not care much about. Basically what I want out of a review is a general sense of the movie and whether the critic enjoyed watching it and whether I'm going to likely enjoy it. Your review reminded me a lot of the review Roger Ebert gave Goldeneye when Gene Siskel asked him if he'd recommend it to people given all it's technicaly and script issues and Ebert responded with "You know what? i watch the movie blind as well and with low expectations. Somehow it still disappointed me. Im not saying you are wrong however this movie has all the bad qualities as the other conjuring franchise movies have. A nice potential yet failed delivery. I felt the jumpscares were predictable and the way people kept checking out spooky areas by themselves was repulsive. Im not saying directing is easy, but you shouldnt make your scary or chilling moments consist of a lazy writing. I say the best thing about the movie was valek killing the girl in the beginning. I wasnt expecting that and when i seen it I thought maybe nobody was safe yet i was wrong. Nearly everyone survive, the devil goat was pointless, got held back by three teenage or younger girls and a school teacher. The nun of course didnt do anything and that ending to me was underwhelming. If you like it, Im glad for you. Me personally thought this was at the bottom of an already failing franchise.

I'm not an ardent follower of Stuckmann, but even so, what bruisermoore said sounds a bit nonsensical to me. You're not necessarily 'bashing' somebody's work by being critical of it. Frankly, being critical or negative shows filmmakers what they can do better in an actually impactful way. Even the movie score appears to have been done away with. But scores can give you a good idea of how much a reviewer liked the movie, and how close it is to providing everything the reviewer wanted. Otherwise, you're just left guessing based on very subjective terminology like 'good' or 'I enjoyed it'. Okay? Of course, as a reviewer you do need to be constructive in your approach.

I actually watched this movie the same as you, I didn't read reviews I stayed away from the scores and I actually was feeling it was going to be a better movie because of the director and editor which turns out I wasn't wrong at all, however I will say the visions and the many logic jumps felt to me that WB may have had a hand in cutting the movies length down, I felt like there was missing script, missing scenes or sequences and I don't know what it was. I give it a 7/10 because it not only entertained me but kept me invested in the story all the way through. I definitely enjoyed the film more then I was expecting too (this is coming from the perspective of someone who hasn’t seen the first film). The mark Kermode “quite, quite, quite NUN” format definitely holds true certainty holds true. However I’d say I found about 50% of the jump scares quite effective but I did see the film in 4DX so I big part of the scares for me more had to do with the sudden shaking of the seats rather then what was on screen. Ultimately the story was very enjoyable and the characters were easy to connect too, the performances were decently other then some pretty Rocky accents (though a lot of that had to do I think with me being Irish and being quite picky in what makes a good Irish accent, but to give cretic to Susan from naria when the accents was it was very accurate it just had a tendency to slip with certain words and phrases) at the end of the day it’s a fun film to watch in a packed cinema but do I feel a compulsion to ever watch it again ? No, but I’ve left the cinema more disappointed with films I’ve been hyped for. Your channel used to be mine and many others go to place to check if a movie was worth seeing, but I think many of us stuck around as much as we did due to your love for films that was always so present in your content. And seeing your new form of review, where you'll only talk about a movie if you've got something you want to say about it, or about your experience with it, has been wonderful. It feels like there's a lot less pressure to explain and judge a movie in a sense, and it just feels like a guy talking about the thing he loves, while knowing what he's talking about and knowing how to talk about it to an audience. I can agree with you somewhat about not seeing reviews before a movie. That said, I like reviews, well I should say “some reviews”. For people like me who don’t get to go frequently, I have reviewers I trust such as yourself and Jeramy Johns that I’ll gauge my enjoyment off of. I’ve watched you guys for several years, I think over 10 for JJ and close to that for you. Your tastes are similar enough to mine that i can gauge my enjoyment level of a movie. There are many times you guys disagree but I’ve also learned to know what sort of things you guys don’t like that I don’t have much of a problem with. Anytime I see Stuckman, Jahns and 3C agree that a movie is amazing, I’m probably getting a ticket. Also, an exam of a movie I’d never have came across that I had a great experience watching because one of you made a video about it, was the film “Raw”. Great example of hearing a review and based on the things said about it, I knew I’d enjoy it, and I did.

It was definitely better than the 1st 1. I feel like they could have shaved off at least 10/15 minutes and it would have been a much tighter and efficient film. I don’t know if it’s still a scene prequel to the first conjuring, the way The Nun (1) showed us Frenchie in his future or if it’s straight up teasing The Conjuring 4. And why did we see the Warren’s hallway as we did? Again, great movie. Look forward to hearing more of your efforts to view movies unbiased. I wish you well in the endeavor.

@@w1ldcard1986It's a decent film but the only thing running through my mind is why didn't they send more priests to help the good nun? They basically told her to eff off and deal with it on her own. Shaky story but the visuals are decent.

@@JungSooLeee As a moderate fan of the franchise, I enjoyed it about as much as the others. Only thing I don’t get is how is Maurice still possessed/the Nun still exist in The Conjuring 2 if the Nun was defeated twice already in the ‘50s
@JungSooLeee Жыл бұрын
@@comaofbowls84 so in reality they couldn’t really destroy the demon, just banish it back to hell. Now the main reason why they didn’t just do the same thing in ‘The Nun’ is because the gateway to hell was completely smashed during WWII, as they stated in the movie. So sending Valak back to hell when he/she can just bounce right back would be pointless. Which is why they try to destroy Valak rather than just banish him. This obviously doesn’t work, as Valak manages to escape by possessing ‘Frenchie’. But, the important point is that at the end of ‘The Nun’ the gateway is sealed up, although it does show a lot of cracks. We can assume that by the time ‘Conjuring 2’ takes place Father Burke has already informed The Vatican about the gateway and they have sealed it up properly like it was done in the past, allowing Lorraine to safely banish Valak by speaking his name, without the fear of him just coming back out into the monastery.

I did this as well, and I also thought it was a very solid film compared to the first one. Idk why people think your selling out to a “bad” movie when in reality your just sharing your genuine opinion and not nodding to everyone one else just cuz it’s the majority. It might take a while for him to trash movies harshly once he has a lot of movies to prove how good he is as a director in the industry. I mean Tarantino can trash any movie he wants and he can get away with it while he is working in the industry because he has made a lot of great movies in his entire career, same goes to Martin Scorsese dissing Marvel at that time Basically Stuckmann needs a huge ego in order to trash a lot of awful movies while he's working in the industry to survive. Atleast that's how I see it 🤷

I'd love to go and make up my mind about most movies. However, films have become incredibly expensive to watch and saturated over the decades, and most people don't have time or money to wade through the large amounts of cinematic garbage flooding theaters over the years lately. Thank you for this review! I find this film to be hands down the best of all the Conjuring films and am baffled by the poor reviews. I’ve been a huge fan of horror since my childhood in the 80’s and am equally critical of the genre as I am passionate. Let’s face it, most horror films are dead weight. It’s always been that way. This film holds its weight in all aspects of filmmaking. Most notably would be set design, cinematography, and characterization. All top notch not just for a horror film but for cinema in general as well. I was immediately engaged and that never let up throughout the film. I am also happy you mentioned the magazine scene. That is not just notable within the Conjuring universe but one of the most creative and original scenes in horror history. Perfectly executed! I am curious if anyone caught how one scene was modeled after a classic scene from Apocalypse Now. That was a great way to pay homage to classic cinema. All the poor reviews are just that poor review that lead me to question the cinematic competency of the reviewers.

WTF??? Not even close 😂😂😂 Talk to me was trash. Unlikeable characters. The 2 jerks who have the statue don't even get their comeuppance. The kid who you at least felt bad for stupidly participates on getting possessed. Then the movie is ruined by the party possession montage. The move is more funny. No scary scenes whatsoever except for the kid getting his face mutilated which was more gory than scary. Not to mention the stupid predictable ending. Just a trash movie. Nowhere close to Hereditary.

Wow, I have some pretty conflicting thoughts here. I did enjoy the magazine stand scene, but that was about it. I thought Storm Reid's character had the most interesting potential that just kind of fell flat, and that the story of the head priestess and her son was far too similar to the story of Burke and Daniel in the first film. Also, I understand the whole crux of this series/style of film is that the characters are GOING to do stupid things and I should just kind of accept that but the teacher's daughter following her bullies into the abandoned chapel, and even Sister Irene following the little boy around the dark city streets alone just seemed sooo far out of character, especially Sister Irene who is posing as having learned from the experiences of the first movie. Spoilers: I also thought that the sequence with the beast roaming the halls was SUPER underwhelming. He was supposed to be the literal embodiment of Satan but all he does is stab a child in the shoulder. Overall, I do think it is better than the first film but not by much. With the similarities between character beats and even overall structure with how the artifact is uncovered and used, I felt that The Nun II wasn't doing much different. Just a slightly better retelling of a similar story from the first, where the more interesting bits fell flat.

Dude speaking from a future director as myself, everything you're saying is exactly how I feel bro and thinking especially i expected so so low of this movie and it got me by surprise. The body count of Valak, the subtle more hidden in the shadows type of malevolence, her tactics made me love this villain character even far better than whatever the shit se was in the last one. I felt that I cared about these characters and wanting them to live. Stakes. Thats what drives the audience, story and consistency of a disaster that almost can't be tamed or dodged. Love it!
