To have lived through this time in the mid 80’s was Magickal. We would walk into parties and hear the Headmasters Ritual blaring and you knew every body in the entire House was getting laid. Liam Gallagher once said I never saw Johnny without good shoes and a good guitar. It took so little to be happy back in those heady days, before HIV before Covid before the Internet and Cell phones. On bright autumn days I still listen to this full album by myself, musing in ye woode, over loves and memories past. What glorious years.

The great John Maher was third in line in the great post-War succession of Chet Atkins - Geo. Harrison - Johnny Marr. Nobody in my generation could touch him; all of us desired to emulate him. His mastery of chord solos, Three and Four note shell voicings and passing tones are the stuff music books are written about today, see R. Vincent 3 note voicings and beyond. Liam Gallagher describes Johnny best for my generation, us working class kids raised on Jelly beans on Maggie’s Farm: “I never saw him without a good pair of shoes and a good guitar.” As they said about George, “When Eric played they said ‘What a great guitarist’ but when George played they said nothing, and quietly wept.” Compare: The Boy with Thorn in His Side (Johnny’s closing Scots dirge solo), to George’s repeat parallel sequence in I need you, and you’ll hear what I mean.

Now when i listen to the Smiths i can appreciate them, but i wish i could go back to that time and appreciate them back then. The melodic guitar in this track coupled with the lyrical genius of Morrissey nearly brings me to tears. It is beauty captured in music. Mr Marr there are no words Sir.

I suffer from A severe anxiety and panic disorder that has been eating at me every day for five years. When I first heard this song I just thought it was an upbeat track cause I didn’t LISTEN to it but really hearing it it really speaks about my situation basically 100%. “Am I still Ill?” Referring to my anxiety and depression from the annoyance of the disorder. “Does the body rule the mind or does the mind rule the body” my body will tell me something’s wrong and that triggers a panic response even though I know I’m fine and tell myself I’m fine my mind and body still clash and cause unstoppable panic. The whole under the iron bridge lyric describes how I used to feel normal and have normal days without worry but even when I should be happy with my girlfriend I’m still too anxious to feel that way therefore the old days are technically better. I could go on even more. Perfect song for coping and I’m sure plenty of other people have the same situation or completely different ones that still apply. Best band ever to form by far🙏

The anthem for the artsy sensitive boy who gets bullied. I can imagine this song being written during such an experience on a cold, rainy Manchester day as teenage Morrissey rushes home scribbling in his notebook in anger the lyrics to this song. Simply beautiful. The Smiths are one of the best.

The Smiths were heavily influenced by Joy Division, David Bowie, and The Talking Heads. So the majority of their discography had a new wave type sound.

@@patrickbateman2225 Morrissey also said that the Doors “never had any hit singles”, so I’m gonna take his statement with a grain of salt. People can not like a band and still find themselves with a similar sound though acquisition alone.

I cannot even begin to express how much this song (and even the band overall) is helping/has helped me. I relate painfully close to this song, and knowing that someone out there knows exactly how you feel and can put it into words, it's surreal, and it makes you want to cry. Not even mentioning the lyrics, the vocalizing at 1:23, absolutely fucking beautiful, I love this with all my heart.

Absolutely pivotal in my appreciation of music, The Smiths encapsulated all I felt about my love of music, I was not part of the angst movement, but lyrically as a word smith, Patrick (Morrisey) was unequivocally in line with with his pears and then his fore fellows Keats and Yates.. this statement may seem overpowered and trite, but thank you The Smiths
