Raphie was like the anti-Tony in Jackie Jr's life. Whereas Tony tried to protect JJ from his worst instincts, Ralph only enabled his stupidity. It goes to show the major influence the right (or wrong) type of father figure can have upon a young impressionable mind.
@DanRaidersWarriorsSharksGiants7 жыл бұрын
Alex if he really promised Jackie Sr what Tony claimed than everything you just said is bullshit.
@DanRaidersWarriorsSharksGiants7 жыл бұрын
Alex, Your comment is bullshit. Being the son of a boss or ex boss sure you will be treated different but he was no threat to Tony at all. Even if Jackie Jr was a member he still would have no claim unless his dad gave it to him before his death. I remember in one mafia book I think one of carlo gambinos sons was a dress maker. Lil carmine was a member and had a crew loyal to him and his dad.So being that it was NY and having his own crew helped out which jackie Jr had neither at least a crew who was all made. Jackie Jr would have to get NY to back him because even if Tony died I cant picture Johnny Sack or Carmine sr or jr picking Jackie Jr to replace him. Tony loved his father/Jackie sr like a brother.Him and Sil and Artie were probably the only 3 people he really loved as friends.
@DanRaidersWarriorsSharksGiants7 жыл бұрын
#1.Jr wasnt a member and didnt need Tony to be one either. He could have got Sack or Carmine to help him get made if he cared that much in NY. He would need NY and/or Sil and the rest of jersey to back him if Tony was dead or he would be fucked like how Richie wasnt made boss of jersey when he got out. You think Sil and Paulie would just be cool with Jackie Jr being the boss instead of one of them? #2.He wouldnt have been a threat anyway just cause he could be a mobster doesnt make him a threat to be boss. Plenty of mobsters in the show could have killed Tony or had him killed so they could try to become boss. The same was true for real life ones where plenty of killers in the mafia never tried to kill the boss to try to replace him. #3.Underestimate his stupidity that poker robbery was a bad idea from the start. A mob boss would be dumb for doing that or giving the ok on that unless it was to an enemy. He didnt do that all to undermine Tony, discretely and indirectly. He did it because Ralph said it might help his name earn respect.
@cjgiletti67627 жыл бұрын
Dan Nolan of course we all know Tony truly loved Jackie Sr and Sil, however, if you really think about it, Artie bucco was Tony's true and only real friend that Tony loved. Everybody who truly knows anything about the mafia knows that it's your best friend who may be the one that ends up walking you out. Artie pointed a rifle at Tony threatening to kill him oh, and Tony didn't do anything about it because they were lifelong true friends that were not mixed up in organized crime together. Additionally, when Tony lent Artie $50,000 and the deal faulted, Tony forgave the debt with the exception of eating for free at the restaurant which didn't even come close to what was owed. Bottom line is Artie was ultimately Tony's true and only real friend that Tony genuinely loved. Additionally, Jackie wanted to be part of the life just like his father, and I agree that doesn't mean he's a threat to Tony because the kid wasn't really even an associate let alone being close to being made. So he would have had a long time to finally make his bones if Tony would have eventually gave his blessing. And because Jackie wasn't a great earner, he more than likely would have just been muscle until he finally matured and maybe started to earn like Chrissy, who is not only an earner but also muscle and brains which is why Tony was going to pass the reins to him until the accident when Tony realized he was still a junkie who nearly killed toni-ann Chrissy's on baby. My disappointment in Ralphie is I like how he tries to help the kid and slowly educate him into learning the life if Jackie really wanted to end up being made, however, it was Ralphie who gave Jack Jr the idea of robbing a card game to up his status which ultimately ended badly. So even though Ralphie initially requested to give him a pass in which Tony agreed and said he'll make sure everybody understands, in the end Ralphie basically turned his back on the kid for his own selfish reasons and Ralphie's own reputation which I thought was pretty fucked-up since Ralphie did many things as I said to slowly educate him into the life and then he turns his back on him and has Jackie whacked even after Tony agreed or was okay with giving Jackie a pass. That's just fucked up to me. But that's La Cosa Nostra, you can't trust anybody in that business. I've done a lot of research and wrote a college paper on La Cosa Nostra and there's nothing glamorous about it whatsoever and you can't trust one single soul not even your best friend or like I've been saying your own stepfather or soon-to-be.

Bizarrely enough, his gun advice is 100% accurate. I used to sell guns and I sold a lot of .38 Special snubs to people who didn't feel comfortable racking or clearing a malfunction on an automatic or else needed a pocket gun and didn't want to downgrade in power to .380 ACP. They won't "never jam up" but they're much simpler and more reliable than an automatic. Just make sure you don't need more than 5 or 6 shots...

@@Pilot3778 TL;DR - it's stupid boomer logic that went out the window decades ago and is very likely to get you killed. Long answer: Because he's advising people handicap themselves under a false guise of comfort and safety instead of imploring them to train and become more proficient with firearms that will surely be a better defense for them and overcoming that fear from the get go. The fact that they say they're "not comfortable" in any regard directly implies they're not terribly proficient with firearms, so his response is to sell them something with EXTREMELY limited ammo capacity that's a nightmare to reload under stress, let alone address a malfunction. If they're not skilled, selling them a gun where you must make every shot count is like taking a kid who just learned how to ride a bicycle and putting them on an early model Honda ATC. It doesn't matter what you sell them if they don't train regularly, because if they can't use it effectively against someone who *CAN* just because they're scared of it, then they might as well be carrying a water gun. Contrary to popular belief, many criminals actively train to clear jams and practice their accuracy very frequently. And with that said, if a civilian is gonna be starting from square one then the correct advice is to sell them any basic semi-auto handgun (like what any basic criminal is gonna pull on YOU if given the chance) and subsequently LEARN to become comfortable with it. Novices are NOT crack shots, and it's frightening someone they trusted to give sound advice told them they would be better off carrying 6 rounds to face somebody carrying anywhere from 15-30 rounds, and more than likely carrying another full mag in their pockets. Similarly it is infinitely easier to rack a slide and chamber another round, as opposed to dealing with a jammed cylinder. Criminals make sure to have as much firepower as possible, and it's outright suicidal advice to tell people they _shouldn't_ do the same in order to protect themselves. It's called "force equalizing". Want a good example? The 1986 Miami-Dade Shootout. It is EXACTLY the situation we're talking about and the result forced an entire FBI office to completely overhaul their arsenal and training tactics, with some surviving FBI agents BLATANTLY telling the public the best thing they can do ditch revolvers and carry as much ammo as they possibly can.

It is EXACTLY the situation we're talking about and the result forced an entire FBI office to completely overhaul their arsenal and training tactics, with some surviving FBI agents BLATANTLY telling the public the best thing they can do ditch revolvers and carry as much ammo as they possibly can.

@@Pilot3778Comment disappeared so reposting. TL;DR - it's bad boomer logic that went out the window decades ago. It doesn't matter what you sell them if they don't train regularly, because if they can't use it effectively against someone who CAN just because they're scared of it, then they might as well be carrying a water gun. Criminals make sure to have as much firepower as possible, and it's outright suicidal advice to tell people they shouldn't do the same in order to protect themselves.

I watched the third season again and was reminded of how stupid Jackie is throughout the entire thing. It starts with him waltzing into Vesuvio's with a chip on shoulder and mouthing off to Tony. He constantly wises off to his mother and Ralphie, cheats on Meadow, commits petty crimes, pushes his buddy to deal ecstasy in Christopher's club, drops out of school and then rips off the card game. You knew it was over when Tony beats him up and tells him "you bottomed out." Before that Tony was still considering where to put Jackie as he refused to go the straight route, and he says this when Jackie stops by on Christmas eve to visit Meadow. But with that beating all cards were off the table. For me Ralphie tries to school him, but kind of steers him in the wrong direction at the same time because I think deep down he doesn't really appreciate him because he lacks any respect and intelligence. The foreshadowing of when he talks about ripping off Feech La Mannas poker game, which gave his crew respect on the street compels Jackie to rip off Ralphie's game.

Ralphie, a captain whose loyalty is under question, gives a cooking lesson to Jackie Jr., son of a don. Everybody recognizes the reference to Clemenza and Michael in The Godfather. But it goes further. Ralphie gives Jackie a gun for use in a daring and improbable scheme that, if successful, promises to change the family permanently and propel the son to the top. One gun is hidden behind the tank of a toilet. The other is hidden in a bread machine. There is apprehension about whether the gun will work. The plotters worry about whether transportation is secure and consider calling the whole thing off. Both plots result in a tense conversation at a table that results in the son shooting and killing someone who is challenging him, the killings framed by the challenger's head landing on the table. However, the lead character in one scheme shows his strength while the other shows his weakness. One aspires to a role to which he thinks he is entitled and tries to use the scheme to get there. The other wants to avoid leading more than anything but engages in the scheme for the sake of the family. Both go into hiding after the shooting. One eventually returns as the leader of the family while the other is shot outside a housing project in Boonton, bleeding onto a pile of snow. In the end Ralphie does not possess the family loyalty and strength of a Clemenza and Jackie Jr. definitely does not demonstrate the smarts and savvy of a Michael. I don't think they could have set up a better contrast to show what makes a legendary leader.

Here is another one. Both McCluskey and Sunshine die spouting aphorisms that point ironically to the conflict that each highlighted son is experiencing. McCluskey says "When you gotta go, you gotta go." Sunshine says "If you can keep your head when others about you are losing theirs ..." and never gets the chance to finish.
