A quick story for the regular viewers and readers of the comments. Do you remember a few episodes back when a police man sent an answer on what is the most stopped car? The Vauxhall Corsa. I told the story to my friend who owns a Corsa. He laughed and was like "yes, makes sence, I already got stopped like 3 times in that car." He was driving another car for half a year and never got stopped by the police. Today, he had to drive the little Corsa again, because his main car is in service, and got stopped literally 2 hours after driving it. :D :D Kind of proves the point.

In Netherland they create Gas and Diesel from plastic trash. Yes, your sausage and cheese packaging can be transformed into fuel and power your car. For example its called Care Diesel. You can also run a diesel from used oil out of a fryer, they did a video on this in fact a few months ago if I recall. The ultimate thing our country (like most others) cares about though is money, not what the long term effect of their actions are.

45:40 Question: Are car guys a dying breed. In the civil engineering world, road design currently is a hot topic. Lots of cities are willing to cut down on car dependency and invest in cycling and public transport. Cars are here to stay, but over the last few decades car dependency has wrecked cities and this needs to change. We need to give people options for transport, not let everybody rely on cars.

So what Garath brought up is a good point that a lot of people over look. I remember reading a study that a friend of mine linked to at work discussing the total net carbon put into the air. In it, it mentioned that right now in the US about 33% of the energy is renewable/green (and that doesn't include nuclear but that's a different debate) and by even doubling that number to bring it to 66% while making all cars on the road electric. The net carbon into the atmosphere would still be more than we are putting out now. I get the push for electric cars is good but my point is you need to look at the other sources of energy as well as the other issues with the electrical grids as well. Especially in places like California where their electrical grid actually causes forest fires due to outdated equipment

Speaking as an electrical engineer my speculation is that eventually no new gas cars will be made (except for boutique car brands that are for the wealthy). I do not think that electric vehicles in their present form will be a permanent solution due to lithium, just like petrol, being a nonrenewable resource; Battery EVs will be around for several decades due to how manufacturers work. The USA is super slow to adapt to new technology so I think by the time we get most people driving battery electric vehicles there will already be a lithium shortage. Other first world nations will quickly realize the need to convert to hydrogen fuel cells which is a much more permanent solution. Creating the hydrogen for vehicles isn't as efficient as charging conventional electric vehicles, but the benefits of ditching lithium are pretty strong. So long as countries develop higher output renewable power infrastructure then it doesn't matter how much energy it takes to preform the electrolysis.

Excellent podcast, as always! Thank you very much. On the subject of ICE cars, they will always be around. As you mentioned, at least some will still run as enthusiast vehicles. At my university (in London), some of the mascots are vehicles from 1902, 1916, 1926 and the 1930s, and they run mostly without issue every week. They won't disappear, and as ICE cars fade into the past, more will join their ranks. As a young vintage/retro vehicles enthusiast myself, I plan on only driving an older vehicle - contrary to popular belief, they can be just as reliable as a current car! Aside from this, EVs simply are not practical in many environments and climates. I don't believe EVs will ever fully displace ICE cars in countries like Russia and the US, let alone countries with less developed electrical infrastructure. They aren't great over longer distances and suffer a lot more weaknesses in cold environments (not to mention the problem of initial cost, which will remain too high for a long time). It has only been in the last few years that cars from the 70s and 80s have started disappearing from Bulgarian roads, but can still be seen running regularly every day. Imagine how much longer it'll take for them to be replaced by EVs! Perhaps in wealthier countries with highly developed infrastructures and public transportation systems, EVs will fully replace conventional cars. For the majority of the World, however, they'll be here beyond my lifetime!

I didn't say they would never catch on, but that even when they do, it won't be everywhere and the "temporary restraints" won't disappear that quickly. Did motor-cars displace the horse immediately after being invented? No! While there were already perfectly functional cars in 1900, it wasn't until the 1950s that they had mostly replaced horses, and that's in Europe. So I don't believe there's any danger of ICE cars disappearing completely any time soon, even though they will lose prominence in many parts of the World.

I’m lucky enough to be in a position to be driving a 2017 abarth 124 spider and am moving to uni soon. I love the car but feel like something more practical and a bit cheaper to run would be better, thinking about a Skoda octavia vrs- probably about a 13-14 plate. Opinions/advice?

If you're making sacrifices in your life to run it then yes get something cheaper. I've been through that phase for 4-5 years and it wasn't fun. But if you can afford it, na, keep it! You only live once.

Mate I had a 2018 Abarth 124 Spider in Elba blue. Loved it. Now I've got a 2020 model Škoda Octavia SEL 1st Edition and honestly haven't looked back. 2.0tdi DSG feels faster than the Abarth and the features are amazing. Honestly do it I known it's a boring car but when you've driven 200 miles in serene comfort on adaptive cruise, with 6 guitars and an amp in the back, you'll know you've done the right thing lol

I've never encountered people who hate cars, they are either interested in them or they are not and they see cars as a means to an end. Maybe it's a big city thing where public transport is good enough, however, it's not in the countryside, so cars are a necessity.

In America there is a HUGE demand for cars. It’s actually ridiculous. I live in a mountain town in Northern Georgia and I would say in the past two years or so there has been at least a 10-15% increase in the amount of “enthusiast cars” and “car enthusiasts” in my area, which has driven car prices up tremendously. There is no shortage of gas-powered cars and “enthusiasts” here in the States. But it’s a fad, and it will be interesting to see how the situation plays out.

Your comments about first car, well I started out legally on a motorbike back in 1985, 125cc, gained my road craft on a bike, passed my bike test at 17 then 4 months later took my driving test (I had been driving off road since 12 years old so had the car control mastered). Learning your craft on a motorbike gives you a far better understanding of what is out there and what to watch out for. I find the KZbin dashcam footage keeps you sharp for those hazard awareness situations on the road, in many cases you can see what is going to happen so you can avoid it. As far as those two wusses not wanting to try their bike tests then more fool them, it opens your eyes to a different world and comes in handy after a devorce 😂.

I'm a bit of a nerd so I can give you a hint on how much power Netflix would use. I have a Server rack in my house. It has 1 server and a handful of other equipment in it. If I use plex (Basically personal netflix) to watch something on my TV from that server. It uses bugger all power. My server rack pull approx 250-400whr of power (or 0.25Kwh to 0.4Kwh) to run either at idle or under load. So if its just me watching a video or my whole family streaming videos off my server that is a max of 0.4KwH. It just so happens that my tv also pull 0.4Kwhs. Now netflix would be using much newer servers which would be WAY more efficient. but on my scale, the CO2 output is about the same running 6 light bulbs running 24/7. I don't have issue with my power usage, as in my state we have something like 28 hydro electric dams producing our power and we export our excess green electricity.

Answer: Old petrol cars will always exist, for recreation and as a hobby, but most or all new commercial cars will eventually be electric. When we have electrics with 200mile+ range for under £2000, the change will accelerate.

I think the thing with people being "car people" in smaller numbers now is because we, the younger generation, have been scaremongered by driving classes and stuff into "This is super dangerous!", and so they are seen more as a utility than a luxury. People treating it as a utility makes people drive worse as they pay less attention, etc., and the moving towards auto-drive is emblematic of it. If people who weren't interested in cars used alternatives more, then roads would be safer and less congested, allowing car people to have a better time. In my opinion cars should be a hobby/luxury, and that's not where society has been going.

Gareth has something there, can't say the company, but if they invest 100k for a report (just paperwork) for a new system to cool down the servers. That means they consume a massive amount of energy. There isn't a clean transport. If you really want to go full green, walk. Without shoes. Producing will generate waste. There has to be a balance. For example, instead of building a car from scratch, brand new electric. Car companies could sell a "kit" or adatp todays cars with electric motors. Engine swap. You gain that "green combustion" (in reality you just moved the emission from A to B but if no one sees it, doesn't matter) but you don't have to get the minerals and materials to build a full complete car. If people won't care what they drive in a future, just gave them a first gen Ford K bit rusty but electric. Great for commuting. Go full petrol or full electric, will be a problem in the long run. there has to be a midpoint.

Years ago when I bought my E46 M3 the plan was always to hold onto it until I shuffle off this mortal coil, in terms of Fueled vehicles theres still a good 30 or 40 years that they will be trundling about in normal public capacity as fleets can be expected to go for quite a while and even the more recent ones are still using some form of engine even just for power generation. The big issue I'm expecting though is different types and I don't mean brands, my car being a prime example acctually gets grumpy if given lower octane fuels and even now when I'm running it I have to be wary of where I can get something it's happy on and as ranges get cut back to make way for new ventures there will usually only keep the more commonly used stuff so it really could mean bye bye Momentum 99 or Vpower.
