Yeah, he is and I would have loved to develop more under his direction, but unfortunately my life was an absolute $&@# show during that part of my life’s journey. It’s okay though, I made the best of it. I’ve developed a ton of knowledge and skill that can benefit a lot of people and an opportunity to share it :)

How would you combine conditioning while working on strength?

Most strength gains will be made "out of season" or at least when you are live wrestling less. Stress is accumulative and most of the time maintaining strength is the goal during the season with everything your body has to recover from. Out of season gaining strength should be the main goal, as well as improving technique. At the beginning of the season or possibly preseason a wrestler should transition to more strength and conditioning working on improving their rate of force development (emphasize speed and quickness) and possible doing some circuits to improve their lactate threshold (to improve anaerobic endurance.)

You think anyone in Dagestan does this? No. To get in wrestling shape, wrestle. Shadow wrestle. Roll around the mat with a partner at 25-50% intensity. Use bands to shadow wrestle. Outside of the wrestling room…maybe sprint hills. That’s it. Really dumb people spend all kinds of time outside of the wrestling room doing strength and conditioning sessions. Smart people wrestle to get wrestling strength and conditioning. Wrestle at varying intensities though. Practice your SKILL people. A big chest and big arms are cool, but that’s bodybuilding. The assault bike and SkiErg are cool, but that’s CrossFit. Are you a hybrid athlete or a wrestler? Look at Micic and Arujau’s arms. They are good because of their time on the mat. It’s a better investment if your time and money to find a better coach than the one you have and travel to train with him. Your coaching will make a bigger difference than a pull-up/burpee/box jump “conditioning”session.

I was an Iowa state champion in HS and received a division 1 scholarship from ISU before retiring from wrestling my second year in college after my 6 concussion sustained in football and wrestling. I know the Sandersons personally. Cody, Cole, and Cael were my teammates. I can guarantee they would disagree with you that Strength and Conditioning are a waste of time. I also have a degree in Exercise and Sports Science. Micic and Arujau are great wrestlers, but have recently lost to athletes who do strength and conditioning outside of the wrestling room. Ono smoked Arujau at the world championships and he has content doing S&C on social media platforms. He’s more powerful and explosive than Arujau and it shows. There are two major ways you can get faster refine your skills to make them more efficient and get stronger and more explosive through S&C.
