Wondering about long format projects. I’m thinking to get one for editing while away from my rig. Music and KZbin videos should be fine. However having 2-4 4K videos for up to 2 hours for a podcast is another story. Mild colour grade. Not looking to do any major work. Also thinking about editing events on the fly and having a quick edit ready for end of the event. Again can be 2-4 hours for the timeline from multiple cameras.

The thing that always found weird is how most youtubers who review new computers, and I am not talking about just the M1 Macs, never ever ever not only use proxy files, but not even mention the possibility of them. So if there is any performance issue in editing or even playing back, any type of footage, immediately blasting (or praising) the computer as great or useless for editing. Perhaps it shouldn't, but it does piss me off. Good video.

What are you shooting with? For the price-to-performance with Resolve (right now), something like the entry model Mac Mini M1 might be your best bet since Resolve has been updated to work natively with Apple silicon. But you have to realize that you may need to take additional steps to realize your intentions. This may mean proxy media workflows, optimized media, render caching, and so forth within DaVinci Resolve. And the more complex your edit/grade the higher the chance that footage will not playback smoothly in the timeline. I've got a $3000 desktop PC running a beefy i9-9900K and 2080Ti GPU and it will still struggle with some timelines without taking some of those extra steps. So it's important to manage your expectations. Under $1000 is a hard spot for doing video editing with heavy grading, effects, and Fusion. Especially if you're working with 4K footage. I've been using PCs exclusively for over 20 years, and ended up adding a MacBook Air M1 to my workflow for field editing and it's incredibly good for it's weight, cost, and performance. I also use the paid version of DaVinci Resolve (Studio) which may make my experience better than someone using the free version though so I can't speak to that.

My head keeps spinning that this is an *entry level* chip in a $700 Mac editing 8K RED RAW. I'm not buying any Apple Silicon yet, given my iMacPro (RIP) still does the job just fine for my needs, but also because imagining what Apple will roll out over the next two years, not to mention how Intel and AMD (which at lease has access to the same semiconductor technology at TSMC's fabs) will respond to this competition. Working in the documentary space for projects that end up on Disney owned networks I preach one very important thing that nobody ever understands in their KZbin videos and even coming fresh out of “Film School” into a job. It’s actually fairly uncommon that the editors in professional productions to edit or even have access to the source footage. Proxies are how it’s done and 1080p or less timelines. Reason being is on most monitors the actual resolution of the project viewer is less than 1080p. So why waste horsepower and spinning rainbow wheels on things you literally can’t see? The sequence settings change to 4K and the source footage is linked to once the cut is locked and it’s on to color work.

Our kind of editing are long form, multi-cam, multi-layers with insane hours of footage. They just want fast, while we spend time to transcode footage the right way. It's a very different world - ours and theirs. I used to just roll my eyes at the way they work. Now I just accept it as it is. FCP caused all these to happen when it first started. Nobody cares about proper workflow anymore.

My thoughts about the whole swap memory thing is that it's kind of interesting. I think that the way swap is managed is different on these new m1 macs as they go searching for swap much earlier than intel macs with the same amount of ram. My 16gb m1 hits swap much sooner than my 16gb intel mac did doing the same tasks. I think this also combined with people pushing these machines really hard because the performance is so good and they run out of memory for what they are doing, so they hit swap. However, I also bring up the point that these m1 macs might be fine. It's possible that iOS has been swapping like this for years now and we haven't had any SSD failures there. Maybe that explains why iPhones slow down so much when you're out of storage. Or it's possible this is just a bug in mac os big sur, but we'll just have to wait and see.
@creenus_beenus3 жыл бұрын
I had similar thoughts as well, comparing to iOS devices I mean. My concerns are that we hit swap and read&write a lot more data than we would on mobile devices. But, if hopefully the SSDs don't actually fail, then I would be able to appreciate how impressive this swap technology is.

TLDR I dont currently use the Mac Mini for editing(software still in beta for M1) but i think it will do pretty well as long as it has the flash storage i think it has. I have the M1 Mac Mini, and on 11.1.1 the SSD was seeing ~90GB writes per day, with 11.2.3 thats down to 25GB/day You might say "well if you're editing that seems normal" Problem is that i've not been able to use it for what i want(software i need is still in beta for M1 native and causes issues) That 90GB/day was literally the Mac Mini just being plugged in and not connected to a monitor just so it would get security updates. After ~90 days, ive had a total of 4TB written. At no point during testing was i working with files on the local disk, and i was only testing for about 4 days. I only transcoded about 130GB of test files before i gave up, and have been waiting on an update to the software ever sence Compare that to my lenovo flex 5 tablet (AMD 4500u with 1tb sabrent rocket Q) I use this to copy photos/videos out in the field, and i've probably copied 2TB+ of photos/videos to it. Over the course of 200 days crystal disk info says there has only been -4TB- 4742GB written. And this migfht be because i also have and play games off of this tablet. Now, we dont know what kind of flash storage Apple is using, it could be that Apple has partnered with Intel/Micron to use Optane/3DXpoint, and these kinds of writes are completely fine for this kind of storage. But if they are using NAND flash like all of their other computers/phones, well this could have killed my 256GB drive in under 5 year had i not updated to 11.2.3, and remember, i literally havent been doing anything on it, so i would have to assume people who were using it would see multiple times more use. TBH i personally feel they are using 3DXPoint because it benchmakrs pretty close to my 110GB optane module, i just dont have a software tool to test the latency, as this would be a telltale sign this is optane instead of NAND
@sergioyichiong72693 жыл бұрын
an intel mac will write lot less data than m1, m1 needs to set ssd like a virtual ram because many times ram is not enough. no matter what reporting tool you use. the ssd wear will be there because apple can set the monitor to report less writes. if apple would put more ram ssd wear would be less but they want to trick users that m1 needs less ram but that is not true. memory usage from mac os is on ssd. ram usage is not a metric

I don’t think those other KZbinrs are trashing the M1 Macs. I think they’re just saying that they don’t live up to the insane hype being thrown around by channels like MaxTech. From a production viewpoint, they don’t solve the problem of playing back some codecs smoothly in 4K as demonstrated in your video. It depends entirely on the codec you throw at them because they are more optimised for some than others. So showing editing techniques that are valid for my 2013 Macbook Pro hardly justifies the hype and I think you missed the point of those other videos. I think the M1s are a good start but I’m hoping the next generation will be more suited to pros with more memory and better graphics performance.

I'm referring specifically to videos completely trashing the M1 Macs without any actual evidence or using very specific use cases (e.g. a really weird codec that barely anyone edits in), and then saying the M1 is useless because of that.

I do have a windows machine with a 3700X, 32G of RAM, and. 5700X but from my understanding I would need to develop a workflow with either proxies or transcode to ProRes if I use my windows rig, thoughts?

Depends on what file sizes you're planning on editing and how much editing you're planning on doing. For lighter editing I think 8 gigs is enough but for heavy editing on 4k and above you'd want 16gigs

My old Mac Pro kinda hit the can, and I can't update it anymore. I've sort of relied on my m1 MacBook Air for video editing with Premiere Pro and AE, and it's actually not terrible. It's a little jittery some times, but I've found proxies to be super necessary. While a MacBook Air isn't ideal for editing, even basic editing, it is doable. However, the rendering can take forever for long form videos ranging from 5 to 30 minutes. I opted for maxed out air over the pro, because it was basically the same computer minus the fans and extra expenses that you're paying for.

What about stacked timelines with transitions, jcuts? The linear timeline edits are rare for me and normally I’m working in stacks 3 levels deep. What are your thoughts? Thanks for the video, great work! 🙏👊
@CreatedTech3 жыл бұрын
Standard 4K stuff is no issue, anything above that (e.g. 6K BRAW) you start to struggle with stacked timelines. Although, like I showed in the video the M1 responds really well to bumping down the timeline resolution while editing or setting the playback to 1/4 quality for example. I've used other computers that just keep sputtering even if you bump down the preview quality. This particular video (as in the one on KZbin) was 3 levels deep with 6K BRAW and 4K Sony A7III, I'm thinking of doing a separate 4K video going into more detail with this (e.g. stacked timelines). IMO standard 4K editing is all people should expect of the M1s. If you're doing BRAW for example you'll likely be going with a 16" MacBook Pro.
@pixelsimage3 жыл бұрын
@@CreatedTech I completely agree and would love to see a stacked timeline video edit with 4k and transitions. These would be the most common use case. 👍

It is clear that the M1 processor does not meet the requirements of VFX, this is an area that requires a powerful GPU. Many do not know that the M1's GPU performance is barely comparable to an old 1050 card. I'm sorry but all this hype around the M1 is exaggerated.

I'm trying to reach out to everyone I can. from watching all of these videos about how powerful the M1 is I decided to buy one for my travel editing computer. I was doing a test to put it against my i9 Alienware computer. I didn't think it would beat it, but according to most of the videos I was watching claiming the M1 beats almost everything (including the i9) I was excited to see how close it would come. I was very excited and convinced about the M1 chip, I decided to go all in, bought the Mac mini, a iPhone 12, ordered the iPhone 13 promax, and picked up a 1tb iPad Pro. I really feel sick to my stomach after discovering the Mac mini can't even play through my timeline without it being choppy and said it would take over 20 hours to render a 23 minute video. I really hope it is in the settings or is there something special that needs done? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
@CreatedTech3 жыл бұрын
20 hours to render a 23 minute video is not normal, so there is definitely an issue somewhere. I can't help you find out what the issue is, because it's likely going to take a fair bit of troubleshooting. I just thought I'd let you know that I doubt it's the Mac Mini. Try using different editing software or footage to see if it makes a difference.

1080p video editing is really easy on anything these days. I would recommend 16 gb so the laptop lasts way longer in general. You could use this for 5 years with awesome performance if you get the 16 gb model. Maybe even with the 8 but I recommend 16.

I am just curious but why did you use choose to use DNxHR over ProRes 422 or even 444 if needed for coloring. I am just asking because ProRes is native to QuickTime and in turn apple, so I assume this would be the fastest codec. I'm just interested in your use case of the DNxHR codec for this hypothetical.

I edit primarily in DaVinci Resolve on a PC, not Mac, otherwise I would shoot in ProRres. DNxHR is much smoother in Resolve compared to ProRes. A few weeks ago I bought a BMPCC 6K and now I shoot in 6K BRAW.

Is like driving a car flat out in first all the time and complaining about the noise, lack of top end speed and eventually and explosion... The other gears are there for a reason, to optimize the torque of the engine, so editing at full resolution in a tiny playback screen is just waste of processing power, is not needed all the time, you can switch between full and 1/2 resolution or a custom playback resolution without problems, sometimes you need total smoothness and sometimes full quality, you have to optimize your workflow, is like flexing power just to brag about that your computer playbacks 8k while editing on a window that is 15% of the total working area.
