Your Friend now knows the Signs of a Catfish if he has never encountered one before. Its a Lesson to learn from a Dude wannabe a Chick Vs an Actual Chick. Its a rare case of someone is actually a Mute so if they use the excuse "I cant voice cause I'm Mute." is a lie most of the time its a Dude trying to hide their cover as a chick. A Catfish pulled the same trick on a Friend of mine. Obviously the Duchess must be into Dudes and since Duchess wants to pretend to be a Gal might as well send that Catfish a Box of Tampons.

I always used a text channel for my non mic friends. They could sit in and listen and just text out responses and me or one of the other peeps in the discord would read it out for the others. Adapting to others is the simplest form of consideration people can have. Also, not always assuming the worst.

Military Background is like a classic Catfish red flag. Not that people from the military don't play XIV but when this is coupled wirh other major red flags it's an obvious case of virtual stolen valor. I think what's sad however is that the Duchess isn't catfishing for monetary gain, but they're just farming attention and fake romance.

I joined the Army back in 2012 and started playing in 2013. Theres a good bit of us playing because its easy to socialize when we have to travel around the world. While some are gullible, most of us military folk can smell bullshit from a mile away due to what we have dealt with lmao.

Just because you're in the military doesn't mean you're out in hostile territory overseas all the time. I have a friend who actively raises a family on base while working on the base. Naturally, they have downtime when they aren't working.

As someone who genuinely knows what it is like to be mute, it is annoying knowing people do it to hide their gender and take advantage of others. Mine was due to a deformity, which I did eventually get fixed through surgery, but sound like crap when I do speak. Side effect is my voice is easily lost (acute laryngitis) because it still isn't, nor ever will be, perfect. Means I still avoid voice chat cause after work my voice is usually worn out from use. Edit: For context, I spent most my life unable to speak due to a form of deformity that was nerve paralysis and growths on the folds. I've only had a voice for about 10 years, but it is very raspy and by end of day usually end up like someone who had severe soar throat. This is due to the correction on the folds leaving scaring that is similar to what happens when callous from for a singer.

This is a story as old a mmos. I had a buddy catfished on ultima online in 99. I remember reading articles in the early 00s that showed about 95 percent of mmo players were male and I bet it’s still near 90. If they won’t even talk to you, say bye. They may be ugly and not want to show themselves and ruin it but no voice chat is a huge red flag. In the super slim chance they’re mute, going to have to produce some believable photos. We always used the to say “there are no girls on the internet. Until proven otherwise, you’re male to me.” Lol. That’s changed some but is still largely true.

Personally I don't do VC because I don't like it, as much as I'm not too much into phone calls, and I'm a girl irl ^^ so yeah there can be different reasons to refuse voice or video calls. But I'm also not in FFXIV to look for love so there's no reason why others should care about my gender. I guess that if you do want a IRL relatioship you'll have to show yourself at some point or it's sus :P

I think many people in ff play opposite characters than they actually are, or maybe they play the gender they identify with more even if they were assigned a different one at birth. I heard its pretty common for male Viera to be played by females (me included as an afab but i lean to considering myself non-binary and had gender confusion growing up etc) So i often don’t think of the people to *definitely* be the gender they’re playing as, even if i see the character as them, although the people around me often play as the gender they identify as

Okay I don't play FF14 yet as I was planning to get it within a couple of Months and I happen to run into one of Panthra's Videos and ngl I like them cause its a real eye opener. After watching this Video I gotta say the Dude totally got Catfished because I've met two People in another Game that has admitted as well pulled the actions of a Catfish. I got an Ex that admitted he Catfished one of my Friends (which was male) and confessed he Catfishes Dudes no idea why he does but he does. Another was a Dude that pretended to be a girl and Dated two of my Friends when it came to Photosharing that Catfish sent my Friend two seperate Private area photos which you can straight up tell wasnt the same. When it came to Photosharing my Friend A got one Photo of a young 18ish 19ish girl and my Friend B got a different Photo from this Catfish which looked nothing like this chick. The Catfish was like an Aunt and her supposive Niece used her Account was the excuse, but turns out there was no Aunt that was "MUTE" or a Niece that shared the Account it was found out it was a DUDE. In the end both my Friends quit that Game and my Friend A became mentally messed up cause of it while Friend B moved on to being with his Ex Gf.

As someone who has participated in quite a bit of ERP as a married individual, (My spouse is fully aware of my ERP and okay with it), I tend to separate the character from the player when participating in ERP. I rarely if ever ask the IRL gender of the person I'm ERPing with, and if it does come up, it pretty much never effects my willingness to participate in it. I'm there for the writing more so than seeing it as any sort of sexual interaction with another person. For me, it's more like collaboratively writing a smutty novel than anything genuinely sexual, though certainly there is a degree of whether someone's character is appealing to me aesthetically and writing wise. About the only time I've ever actually asked about someone's gender I was ERPing with was when I was getting clear signals that they were transgender IRL, and that was just so I could send them tons of love and support for their transition.

Male here, play fem Viera as well, best curves imo. I prefer eye candy over a rl rep of myself in game. Have never thought about erp in ffxiv, but if so, would def need to be a female in rl. Also girls do 100 send such things. I had a girl who would snap some super educational vids of herself and a cucumber from time to time. We only knew each other from an anonymous chat app. She was just one of many females on this app who would send me such things, completely free and never asked for. Just saying, women can be just as pervy as guys about these things.
