The Verve - Sonnet from the amazing album Urban Hymns. I love so many song by The Verve but this stands above for me. Their reunion tour and incredible album ‘Forth’ were a big thing for me at the time in 2007 and I was interviewed on my way into their gig at Manchester’s GMEX which ended up on the bonus disc of Forth when it was released (if you have it, try and find me. I look very different but a clue? I’m wearing a New Order t shirt). When they played Haigh Hall, Wigan in 1998 I was 10 years old but it blew my mind that a band with a number one album and single were not just from a few miles up the road from where I grew up, but also doing a gig there
It’s also one of my favourite songs to sing. Lyrically it’s amazing but it’s an absolute pleasure to deliver. Richard Ashcroft has been a huge inspiration to me and his voice and lyrics are underrated. Singing this rolls off the tongue like almost no other and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to convey how much I love singing this song as it was one of the first I ever learned. It just feels amazing.
